CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
Ellie had finally noticed the severed ear on the floor, when David pushed the bowl closer, Ellie shook as she realised what it was or could be. Violet sat in the corner glaring at David when he spoke,
"For what it's worth, this is just deer meat. I swear."
Violet felt sick looking from the ear, to the food, they were some sick fucks.
Violet snapped,
"You're gonna chop us up into little pieces?"
David smiled before softly speaking,
"I'd rather not. Please, just tell me your names. If you wanna judge me..."
Ellie shouted loudly, this was ridiculous. They were cannibals.
For survival or not it was sick.
"Judge you? You're eating people, you sick fսck!"
Violet sat back as Ellie silently nodded at Violet, David sighing and speaking,
"Yes. There are only a few of us that know. But I would've told you. Sooner or later. I guess sooner."
Ellie spoke again,
"You're an animal."
David chuckled before sighing after his first sentence, Violet grimacing as this crazy man kept walking forward,
"Well, yes, we all are. That's sorta the point. It was a last resort. You think it doesn't shame me? But what was I supposed to do? Let them starve? These people who put their lives in my hands, who e-expect me to keep them safe, who love me?"
Violet scoffed and spoke angrily,
"Yeah, maybe.
Did you even give them a choice?"
David chuckled before shaking his head pacing up and down around the cage, Violet and Ellie instantly moving away. Violet was gonna kill him. David spoke,
"You don't believe that. I don't think your friend would either.
Didn't she just take another man's life to save yours?"
Violet snapped back at David feeling the anger bubble in her stomach, she just needed him to leave then she could break out. She just needed the opportunity.
"I was defending myself.
Your people wanted to kill us!!!
And the same thing for buddy boys who died at the UEC.
I have hurt people for less.
And trust me, I am going to hurt you in ways you can't even imagine."
David laughed as he looked to Ellie than back to Violet before speaking,
"And you know what I see when I look at you? Me. You remind me of me. You both are natural leaders, you're smart... loyal. Violent."
Violet muttered a fuck you as Ellie snapped back angrily,
"You don't know anything about me."
David spoke softly, making Violet feel sick, he was deranged.
"But I do.
If I let you out of that cage right now, put that knife of yours in your hand, you'd stick me in a second.
You have a violent heart.
And I should know.
I've always had a violent heart. And I struggled with it for a long time. But then the world ended and I was shown the truth."
Violet snapped as she glared at the man,
"Just because the world ended, doesn't mean you can be a pedophile. I mean figures you are a preacher."
David ignored Violet's attack, as he started explaining more about how he hadn't been changed by god.
But by something totally different.
"No.
By Cordyceps. What does Cordyceps do? Is it evil? No. It's fruitful. It multiplies. It feeds and protects its children, and it secures its future with violence, if it must. It loves."
Ellie softly spoke although bored of this conversation as Violet stood up slowly as Ellie stepped closer to the gate. She could tell Ellie was playing him at his own game, her voice was never usually this soft,
"Why are you telling me all of this?"
David smiled at her, making a shiver go down both Violet and Ellie's spine.
His cold eyes boring into her soul.
"Because you can handle it. The way the others can't. They need God. They need heaven. They need... they need a father. You don't. You're beyond that. I'm a shepherd surrounded by sheep, and all I want... is an equal. A friend."
Ellie spoke with fake innocence as she led him into her trap, Violet watched amused as the man fell right into it.
"What about my friend?"
David nodded, moving closer to the gate, making Violet struggle against her instinct to pull Ellie backwards.
"Like I said, loyal. I can tell the others to stop looking for him. They'll spare him."
Ellie walked closer as she spoke softly, smiling slightly as she looked into David's eyes and struggled not to vomit,
"Really? They'll just let him go."
David smiled lovingly at Ellie nauseating Ellie and Violet,
"Yes. If he leaves us in peace, they will just let him go. Violet can stay or leave. They do what I tell them to do. They follow me. And they would follow us.
Lord knows I could use the help. I... Look what's happened. Think of what we could do together, as strong as we are. We'd make this place perfect.
We'd grow, spread out. And we'd do whatever we needed for our people. Imagine the life we could give them. Imagine the life we could build."
Violet felt the anger in her heart reach one hundred present as he softly touched Ellie's hand, Ellie putting her other hand on top of his and staying there for a second until she smiled and spoke,
"Oh."
Immediately after Ellie broke his fingers as he pulled on her, Violet stabbed his thigh through the fence.
He screamed moving back as he hit Ellie's head into the fence, and snapped one of Violet's finger, Violet moved her hands away and snapped it back in place as she laughed moving backwards Ellie panting on the ground. David snapped,
"You little cunts.
Let's see what I go tell the others now."
Violet smirked as Ellie spoke shouting loudly as he walked to the door, staring in horror, Violet put the middle finger up as she moved over to Ellie to check on her wounds.
"Ellie.
"What?"
"Tell them that Ellie is the little girl who broke your fսck¡ng finger!"
David snapped glaring at the pair, he was going to enjoy killing them, touching them.
"How did you put it? Hmm? "Tiny little pieces"?"
He left the room as another guard immediately replaced him, as Ellie cuddled into Violet, both of them panting and wondering what the next ploy of action was.
Joel was running on fumes and adrenaline as he continued to try and find his family. As he walked into one of the houses at resort, he opened the door, to find their horses, Shimmer and Lulu, dead on the ground.
He waved his flashlight jumping slightly when he saw three naked headless corpses.
He jumped backwards as he searched around, he looked into one of the cupboards he found, Violet and Ellie's backpacks. Worry filled his heart as he continued on his search.
Joel was coming.
Violet whispered to Ellie quickly,
"When they come back for us,
they are going to probably grab you, I can use my pocket knife to break out, you don't know how to do that so, I am going to say that you are infected and that should buy us some time.
To get us both outta there.
Do whatever it takes, El."
Violet brought her nose to Ellie's as Ellie breathed in, feeling safe for a moment. She was terrified but she knew Violet would fight for her better than anyone, even Joel.
Lily often told her that Violet was completely ruthless, some of the things she had heard the Blood Lily had done made her feel sick.
But Lily told her, no innocent person died at the hands of her sister,
if she could help it.
David and three other guys walked in, David pulling Ellie with him and one more guy helped him, while two others held Violet down as she struggled screaming for Ellie who panicked and bit David on the hand.
They pulled her out as Violet fought as hard as she could, as they placed Ellie on the table, Ellie screaming as James shouted,
"Shut up."
Ellie pleaded with David as the two other people left the room, Violet slyly working on picking the lock.
Before Violet stepped back and screamed,
"She's infected."
Then Ellie widened her eyes and yelled as well, backing up her claim as James and David scoffed,
"I'm infected.
And now so are you.
Roll up my sleeve.
Look at it.
Look at it."
David winced as he panicked looking at his hand, and back at Ellie's bite, as Violet chuckled throwing David's words back in his face,
"What did you say?
Everything happens for a reason right."
Ellie smiled as Violet bent down and finished picking the lock as David argued with James, Ellie quickly grabbed the knife and threw it into James' neck while Violet pushed the door of the cage into David, roughly sending him flying into the wall.
Violet ran and grabbed Ellie as David shot at them missing completely.
They made it into another room, as Violet ran trying to figure out how to get out of there. The door looked and they hid behind another door, as Violet lit a piece of paper of fire and threw it at him. It missed landing on the wood, creating a fire.
Violet and Ellie ran and hid as Violet turned to Ellie whispering as quietly as she could,
"Please do not come out.
No matter what you hear.
Joel is coming.
Okay I need you safe."
Violet snuck around, moving out of David's line of sight,
Violet hid behind a door and jumped at him stabbing his shoulder as he yelped in pain swinging his cleaver at her as Violet dodged but not fast enough as it sliced her side about 3cm.
Violet cried out as she fell down, before looking up with burning hatred in her eyes. Violet tried to stand, as her legs gave out, blood dripping fast from her side, David laughed, kneeing Violet in the head making her fall unconscious.
Ellie gasped quietly, as tears welled up in her eyes, when David started to speak,
"I've locked all the doors.
I know you are not infected.
Your friend isn't dead,
she's just taking a nap.
No one infected fights this hard to stay alive."
Ellie shook as she listened to his psychotic words, as her worry for Violet grew by the lack of movement from her in a while.
David continued,
"No one likes being humiliated, Ellie.
You don't know how good I am!
You don't know what I would've given you. Well I have news for you.
Neither of us are dying today.
Well your friends will.
You see, I've decided you do need a father, so i'm gonna keep you and i'm gonna teach you."
Ellie stepped out from her hiding place trying to get the drop on David, as she lunged quickly at him stabbing his other shoulder as he threw Ellie to the ground. Violet stirred as she tried to open her eyes, hearing Ellie struggle as David pinned her too the ground, straddling Ellie.
"Violet, get up please!
Get off me you motherfucker!"
Ellie screamed for Violet, as Violet groaned quietly attempting to get up as she crawled to her knees, looking ahead and seeing David on top of Ellie, as she suddenly was transported to when she was seventeen.
Under that man.
Screaming for help, when no one came, she lost the last bit of innocence she would ever have.
Violet would not fail.
Not Ellie.
Feeling the dizziness from the blood loss, Violet continued creeping forward as Ellie spat in his face as David spoke,
"Oh I thought you already knew. The fighting is the part i like the most.
Don't be afraid.
There's no fear in love."
Violet moved as fast as she could nearing them as she saw David fiddle with her jeans, it was like a cloud of fury washed over her as Violet pulled her knife out of her pocket as she moved groaning, as she stabbed his back and pulled down, falling down in agony, before mustering up all of her strength and grabbing Ellie and running to hide, Violet groaned holding her side as she turned to Ellie, who's tears cascaded down her face as she shook not being able to say a word as Violet wiped them away gently, her heart aching for her girl,
"I'm so sorry, baby.
I'm so sorry.
You need to find an exit,
find it whatever you have to do,
please don't fight me on this, when I say go you run okay, you find Joel."
They heard David still coming at them, as Ellie whimpered nodding as Violet spoke again as she leaned in and kissed her forehead,
"I love you, kid.
Now, you go.
You run fast and far."
Violet signalled for her to go, as Violet wobbled, her knees giving out as she rounded the corner, making sure to move quietly, she knew she didn't have any knives left, and if he still had that cleaver, she might not make it.
She mustered up all the strength she could as her vision switched between black and white as she tackled him to the ground as he fought with her, his hands wrapping around her throat as Violet pressed into one of his wounds, a scream leaving David's mouth as she smirked as her head swung to the side when she was hit in the face with a wooden plank.
Her vision blurred as she fought against David reaching for the cleaver underneath the chair as he screamed at her for letting Ellie leave.
"I'm going to enjoy this.
After I finish with you,
Ellie will be mine.
Mark my words."
Ellie ran outside, as fast as she could as she shook before feeling someone grab her from behind, as she screamed in fear, panicking and kicking and screaming against the person before moving to hit the person as Joel spoke quickly,
"It's me."
Joel's face etched in worry, as he looked at the blood splattering Ellie's face. His heart broke at her screaming, as she shook against him still fighting in fear before he spoke again,
"Hey look... it's me it's me.
it's okay."
Ellie looked at Joel as she tried to process what had just happened,
she stumbled over her words as she spoke, her voice cracking as she mumbled the rest of the sentence.
"He..."
Joel knew what that meant, his fear rising as he wondered where Violet was. His priority though was to make sure Ellie was okay, just like Violet would, as he held Ellie's cheeks in the palm of his hands, he knew then and there. She was his. Her daughter. Her family, he had known probably before but he knew that there was no debate anymore, she was his baby girl.
Just like Sarah was.
Joel spoke as Ellie fell into his embrace,
"it's okay it's okay baby girl i got you i got you."
He pulled back as he spoke quickly,
"Where's Violet?"
Violet pulled in and out of consciousness as she let out choked screams as he unbuttoned her pants as she fought hard feeling the bottom of the cleaver in her hand. He had one hand placed onto her underwear as she screamed quickly bringing the cleaver down onto his arm, as David yelped, Violet wasted no time jumping up and on top of David bringing the cleaver down again and again. Even after David stopped breathing, she just kept stabbing him, tears streaming down her face, as she watched David's face disappear.
He would never hurt Ellie ever again.
After she finally stopped, tears stayed streaming down her face as she struggled to stand, moving towards the door, limping as she got to the exit, making it outside, before she saw some people in the distance.
Panic filled her but
then she heard her name being screamed,
it was Joel.
Joel was here.
He was holding Ellie.
He was here.
Violet choked back a sob as she moved as fast as she could, Joel colliding with her carefully bringing his jacket tightly around her waist trying to stop the bleeding. Violet cried as she kissed him hard. He whispered I love you over and over again as Violet returned it in between kisses.
Violet stared at him, love circling in her eyes as she watched him attend to Ellie and herself.
She loved him so much.
She loved Ellie like her own.
Ellie was her own.
Violet fell further into him
shaking as he supported her weight, Violet then pulled away, breaking into a loud sob when she saw Ellie's broken facial expression
and brought Ellie tightly into a hug.
Violet kissed Ellie's forehead,
as she cried. Violet softly spoke,
"It's all right.
You're safe.
We're safe."
Violet tried to send Ellie a smile, as Ellie looked into Violet's eyes with such adoration and love.
Joel spoke softly as they fell into his embrace.
"It's okay.
I got you.
I got you both."
Joel helped Violet and Ellie stand up as they walked away,
away from this place.
Together.
As a family.
