REBEKAH HAD BEEN WITH ALEC AT THE CLIFFS THAT DIVIDED THE RESERVATION AND THE CULLENS TERRITORY WHEN ROSALIE HAD CALLED HER, ALL BUT DEMANDING THAT SHE COME HOME. The youngest Cullen wouldn’t have thought much of it until Rosalie had said to make sure she comes alone. Which meant not arriving at the house with Alec at her side.
But before she could question her blonde sister, Rosalie hung up - leaving Rebekah to stare down at her phone confused while Alec smirked in amusement. But Rebekah could see the concern in her mate's eyes, so she tried to give him a reassuring smile.
“I’m sure it’s nothing bad. Alice probably wants a girls' day and is kicking every guy out.” Rebekah guessed, and Alec relaxed just a tad - though the line of her brow was still furrowed and his shoulders were still tense. “Maybe while I’m seeing what they want, you could visit Santiago and see how he’s doing. I know Leah hasn’t been making it easy for him.”
Alec laughed at that because Rebekah was right. For the past week, Santiago had been chased around by the angry she-wolf more times than any of them could have counted. Leah was defiantly not making things easy on the vampire, but still, Santiago wouldn’t be deterred.
“I suppose you are right my love. Maybe I will call Demetri and Felix as well and see how they have been.” Alec shrugged as he kissed her cheek. “Have fun with your sisters.” He smiled at her before flitting away leaving Rebekah to smile after his form.
Her smile soon fell though as she looked back down at her phone, and with a shake of her head - she began to make her way back from the Cullen’s home.
When she got there, she was met by an angry Jacob kicking his bike away before shifting and running off into the woods. Now Rebekah was very concerned and didn’t waste a second as she rushed into the house - only to be stopped by both Emmett and Jasper.
“What the hell is going on?” She questioned eyes narrowing when she saw her two brothers share a look. “Rosalie sounded upset and now Jacob is running off to God knows where! What is happening?”
“Rebekah, something happened during Bella and Edward’s honeymoon.” Emmett’s voice set off warning bells in the brunette’s head. Her brother had never sounded so serious, so monotone - not even when they were on the outs with each other.
“Move.” Rebekah pushed through the two men and made her way into the room. Her eyes fell on Esme and Carlisle, her parents both wringing their hands and trying to mask the looks of worry on their faces.
Alice was perched on the far end of the room, her arms crossed over her chest and she argued with an even frustrated Edward, who was running his fingers through his hair. But their argument seemed to be onesided with Edward quietly hissing out answers to Alice’s silent questions.
Rosalie was standing in front of the couch, her eyes hard and shoulders tense, but they relaxed ever so slightly when her gaze met Rebekah’s and she stepped out of the way for the brunette to see what had everyone so on edge.
Rebekah would have fainted if it were possible.
Her golden eyes stayed glued onto the large baby bump that Bella had her hand resting on. It was impossible, she was seeing things, she had to have been - because there was no way that Bella Cullen was pregnant.
“It’s not possible.” Rebekah muttered as her hands came up to her mouth and she slowly came to stand in front of Bella, sliding down into a crouch as her eyes never left the bump. “Holy fucking shit.” Esme didn’t even scold her.
“Hey, Becks.” Bella smiled awkwardly and Rebekah shook her head and ever so slowly reached her hands out, pausing as her gaze flicked up to the human’s own eyes. “It’s okay, just be gentle please.”
Rebekah’s touch was soft and cool as she let her hands splay on Bella’s belly, a look of wonder on her face. She had never longed to be a mother, not once had she - but the couldn’t deny the feeling of pure joy and elation that oozed off of her.
“Impossible.” She once again murmured as a sharp punch was delivered to her palm. Then her gaze flickered to Edward, who was openly glaring at the bump with terrible hatred. “Explain now.”
AS EDWARD EXPLAINED TO REBEKAH ALL THAT HAD HAPPENED, THE YOUNGEST CULLEN TRIED HER BEST TO STAY CALM. She had to because at this point the family’s tense nature was getting too much for even Jasper to handle.
Rebekah bit her lip as she drummed her fingers on the counter in the kitchen. Carlisle was there with the two along with Emmett, while Esme and Rosalie tended to Bella - leaving Jasper and Alice to begin the research they would need to deal with this…situation.
“God and I thought after you two were married, everything would finally calm down.” Rebekah ran a hand through her hair as she glared at nothing or no one in particular. “One month? Can we have one non-violent month!?”
“Apparently not.” Emmett grumbled from his spot beside her, having jumped up to sit on the counter. “But that isn’t just what we wanted to talk to you about.”
Rebekah’s eyebrow furrowed for a mere second before realization befell her. “Alec.”
“We can’t trust him, Rebekah.” Edward’s words caused a wave of anger to well up inside the brunette. “He is still with them.”
“Last time I checked he was my mate.” Rebekah hissed quietly, rounding to face the mind reader completely. “He has a right to know.”
“Rebekah this is a delicate situation.” Carlisle added softly, placing a hand on his youngest daughter’s arm. “The circumstances are more tense.”
“He’s still her mate, Carlisle.” Emmett spoke up this time as he came to stand behind his little sister, showing that he would support her no matter what. “And he is part of this family. He wears our crest.”
“And he still wears theirs!” Edward thundered before he began to pace.
Rebekah was still mad about his words, furious even - but she could see the anxiety and fear welling up in Edward’s eyes. He was scared for Bella, worried about what the Volturi might do to his family. And in some ways his worries were logical.
“Eddie.” Rebekah’s voice was soft as she placed her hand on Edward’s arm, allowing her power to calm her stressed brother. She hated using it, yes, but he needed it. “I know you’re worried, and I understand. Let me talk to Alec, he will listen to me.”
“I’m worried, Rebekah.” Edward had never sounded so small and the youngest Cullen smiled sadly as she pulled him into a hug.
“I know, so am I.” She then pulled back, nodding her head towards the room that Bella was placed in. “Go see her.”
Edward sighed but obeyed and Carlisle sent her an apologetic look before he followed after his son. And that left Rebekah and Emmett alone in the kitchen.
“This is a mess.” Rebekah finally muttered after a minute of silence and Emmett hummed in agreement.
“You said it.” The burly Cullen nodded. “You want me to tell the others to stay in the room when Alec gets here?” Her brother asked as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Please.” Was all Rebekah whispered as she pulled out her phone to call her mate.
Before Emmett left, he turned to his baby sister and sent her an easy smile. “Everything will work itself out, Baby Bear. It always does in this family.”
His words caused Rebekah to relax just a smidge, and she sent him a grin as he left.
Now she stood there, looking down at her phone with many emotions racking through her body. It took her five minutes to finally call him, and he picked up on the first ring.
“My heart? Is everything okay?” The sound of his voice made her shiver as her body relaxed at the deep baritone. “Did you find out what is going on?”
“I need you to come to the house, Alec. But don’t come in just yet, I will meet you outside.” She didn’t give him time to answer before she hung up, gently tossing her phone on the counter and placing her head in her hands.
‘Just breathe Rebekah.’ She thought to herself as she cupped her hands over her mouth. ‘Everything will be fine.’ Her shoulders dropped in defeat.
ALEC HAD JUST ARRIVED AS REBEKAH HAD WALKED OUT OF THE HOUSE. The male brunette seemed worried as he took in the tense frame of his mate, and Rebekah tried her best to give him a reassuring smile - though she doubt it did much good.
“Rebekah, what is happening? Is everyone alright?” Alec was in front of her in a second, hands cupping her face as he looked over her for injuries. “You sounded worried on the phone, I ran straight here from where Santiago is staying.”
God, she had nearly forgotten about Santiago, but they would cross that bridge when the time came. For right now she had to worry about Alec.
“Alec, something did happen.” Rebekah pulled her face out of Alec’s hands and pulled him down to sit on the steps - she followed suit right after. “This is going to so impossible and you may call me a liar, but you have to believe me.”
“My heart, tell me.” He begged softly and Rebekah took a deep unneeded breath.
“Bella is pregnant.” If the situation hadn’t been so serious she would have laughed at the look on Alec’s face. “I know it sounds crazy, but it’s the truth, I swear it.”
“Rebekah, vampires can not have children.” Alec finally spat out in shock, quickly rising from his spot and staring down at her. “It is not possible.”
“I know Alec! But I saw it, I felt it! It is possible Alec, and right now I need to know where you stand with this. I don’t want to make you choose between me or your coven.”
“Rebekah I have to tell them!” Alec hissed and now Rebekah was standing as well, both mates staring each other down much like they had the day they shared their first kiss. “This is not something to be kept secret.”
“Alec, they will kill her and we both know it. Please I just ask for a little bit of time, just until the child is born.” Rebekah nearly begged and Alec turned away, handing rubbing at his mouth. “Alec, please.” Her hand landed on his arm and his red eyes flickered to hers. “I need to know if I have your support, because I am scared, so so scared. I need you.”
Rebekah knew she was playing dirty, but it was true. She needed him now more than ever and she could see the conflict in Alec’s eyes just before he squeezed them shut.
Her mate let out a growl of frustration, cursing a bit in Italian before he sighed and let his eyes open slowly. He fiddled with his crest in one hand, while he stared down at the leather band on his wrist. Two families, two covens, two hard choices.
Yet, in the middle, there was Rebekah, staring at him with pleading eyes while her world seemed to crash around her. And she was looking to him to save her.
His choice was made very easily after that.
“You are my family Rebekah.” Alec murmured after a moment before he turned to look at her - bringing her into a firm embrace. “I protect my family."
“Thank you.” She whispered into his chest, relaxing when she felt his lips craze over the crown of her head.
“You will never have to thank me for being there for you because I will always be there when you need me.” His voice was gentle, but firm. “You have my word.”
And maybe, just maybe, Emmett had been right.
Everything would work itself out eventually.
She hoped at least.
