CHAPTER NINETEEN
As they snuck out of the building and into the next building Joel called out,
"We need to get outta sight."
Violet watched Joel struggle to breathe as she snickered whispering to him old man, as Henry pointed towards the right side and stuttered over his words,
"Uh... I, I-I think it's this way. This should be it."
As they walked through the door, water dripped from the ceiling as Joel directed Ellie to get her gun out, but more looking at Henry,
"You ready? Get your gun out."
Violet pulled out her gun as Lily followed suite, Violet loaded her gun, as they moved forward, flashlights in toe, as Henry spoke loudly making Violet flinch at the sound of his voice,
"You see? It's empty. The plan is good."
Joel had the same idea as he shushed the man turning towards him and snapping,
"Shh. "The plan is good"? We've been down here two seconds. We don't know anything."
Henry turned to Ellie as they walked forward and spoke quickly both Ellie and Joel snapping back at the same time, Violet laughed loudly as Lily snickered under her breath,
"Your dad's kind of a pessimist."
"He's not my dad."
"I'm not her dad.
Just point your light forward... and be ready to run."
Joel turned to Violet opening the door, as they walked forward, Joel stayed forward watching out for potential dangers.
As they continued walking, Violet kept her gun up as they appeared at another tunnel walking through as they pointed their flashlights at the walls, it was painted with a huge castle, Ellie gasped as Lily's eyes widened, Sam smiling as he turned around looking at the painting.
Sam loved painting, his brother often fought hard to get him supplies.
Joel spoke softly looking around,
"I heard about places like this. People went underground after Outbreak Day. Built settlements."
Ellie questioned as they walked forward Sam walking to the door, Violet cutting in front of him and placing a hand out and staring at Henry shaking her head as he pulled Sam backwards.
"What happened to them?"
They opened the door, finding what looked like a school. She hadn't seen one in what felt like forever, it looked like a whole settlement lived here. On a whiteboard it said the house rules as Joel read them before replying to Ellie,
"Maybe they didn't follow the rules and they all got infected."
Ellie nodded as she walked away laughing and gasping when she found a Savage Starlight comic, on the floor, Sam joined her excited as well, Lily had her own collection at home that Violet had brought home after most missions. She looked everywhere for them. They were having fun and content so Violet turned to Joel,
"We need medical supplies, cowboy.
Any chance you know where to find any, Henry?"
Joel looked at her shocked at the use of a nickname rolling his eyes as he turned towards Ellie, Lily and Sam who were being too loud (really he's just old), Joel spoke harshly,
"Hey, keep it down. We're not out yet."
Ellie groaned not wanting to leave yet, this is the most stimulated she had been in weeks, there was so much to do, even a soccer ball. Ellie spoke voicing her concerns,
"Ah, c'mon. Can we just rest here for a while? There's, like, actually sh¡t to do here."
Henry smiled at Ellie nodding before bringing up an excuse and talking to Joel head on,
"Wouldn't be so bad to wait the light out a bit. Safer in shadows when we pop back out on the other side."
Joel nodded as he sat down, all of them relaxing for just a moment.
Joel and Henry had a conversation about why Henry was a rat, and he told him that he lied about not killing anyone, Henry had killed Kathleen's brother for medicine for Sam.
Violet totally got it, it was cruel that they would blame him for just trying to save his little brother. Violet walked over to Lily pulling her aside as Ellie and Sam played soccer on the fake goal on the wall.
"Doesn't feel like we've been able to talk much lately, I just wanted to ask how you are doing? First trip outside, pretty scary, I guess for me more than you though."
Violet laughed lightly as Lily smiled at her sister, Lily knew that Violet had sacrificed a lot to keep her safe, her sister had saved her many times, but Lily liked to think that she also saved her sister, Lily helped her feel safe. Lily spoke softly,
"I'm okay really!
It's been scary, but nothing I can't handle, I know you'll keep me safe.
I love you Vi— truly."
Violet's eyes welled up as she embraced her sister, kissing her on the forehead as Joel snapped after Ellie roared loudly, although it was more that he was uncomfortable that someone brought up that he was a father.
"We've waited long enough."
As they walked in the darkness, walking towards a settlement of dead cars, Sam started signing to his brother asking why they can't use torches, and Henry signed back telling him that it was so they don't draw attention. Sam signed that no one was there so why not, to which Henry spoke loudly making Violet flinch again, causing her to look around paranoid and take her rifle off her shoulder, she loaded her gun quickly as Joel shot a look to her nodding think she was smart to do so.
"No. No one is here."
No one's gonna be here because... my plan worked."
Joel rubbed his temple as he groaned never getting a moment of silence.
"So much goddamn talkin'."
Henry shrugged feeling smug laughing to himself stretching his arms out to the side,
"I'm just saying... I delivered.
Make this right, go down the street, embankment behind the last house... and we're out."
Ellie asked curious, Lily standing next to Violet holding her hand as she noticed the paranoia on her sister's face, the probability that they would get caught was too high to chance anything,
"So we cross the river and then what? Where ya gonna go?"
Henry answered simply shrugging his shoulders,
"Don't know yet."
Ellie spoke getting sent a glare from both Joel and Violet as she widened her eyes and giggled a tiny bit and there reaction starting to speak sarcastically,
"Well, we're goin' to Wyoming. What? It's a huge state. It can fit two more people."
Henry sighed answering, he could tell from how Joel and Violet had been this whole time, they weren't stranger people or friendly at all.
"Yeah... maybe we just call this one a success and say our fond farewells."
Ellie started to a impression of Joel making Violet laugh quietly, Joel looking at her like he had been betrayed,
"No, he'll change his mind. Trust me. This is how it goes. He's like, "No, Ellie. Never, ever, ever happening." And then I'm like, "I'm gonna ask you a million more times." And he's like..."
Suddenly there were loud gunshots causing Violet to swear loudly pulling Lily with her to nearest car as Joel shouted for Ellie, Sam and Henry to hide as well,
"Move, move! Go!"
More gunshots came there way causing Violet to swear, when she got her hands on that motherfucker, their would be hell to pay, Violet spoke trying to get a gage on the location of this fucking sniper,
"The fսck is that coming from"
Joel looked her way and whispered for her to be quiet as Henry grabbed onto his brother and pulled him close hearing another gunshot that caused him to try and run, Violet eyes widening as Joel yelled after them.
"What are you doin'?!"
Henry yelled quickly before narrowly dodging a gunshot,
"Gettin' the fսck outta here! Oh sh¡t, oh sh¡t! What do we do?"
He ran back to cover, quickly knowing his mistake and spoke trembling towards the end scared for Sam his beautiful little brother.
Violet turned around sighing as she spoke quickly, Joel snapping his head to hers in disagreement,
"Stay here. I'll go."
The gun kept shooting as Joel pulled Violet to him, Lily also voicing her concern,
"You're not going.
I am."
Violet glared at the man trying to compromise knowing that once that little sniper issue is dealt with they can get out of her get to safety.
That's all she wanted.
"We'll go together, do it quickly."
Joel nodded as Lily protested and Ellie argued with Joel, Joel shushed them both and spoke quickly,
"If you don't move, he's not gonna hit you. We're gonna go around, try to get in the house through the back, and then we'll take him out."
Ellie worried spoke quickly, making Joel's heart twist while Violet kissed Lily's forehead spoke to her as Joel and Ellie had a heart to heart and he asked her if she trusts him. The answer was obvious. Joel hated it.
"I will be back,
stay down you'll be safe."
Violet left with Joel, evading the eye of the sniper successfully, although Violet was silently judging whoever was the sniper, like come on.
They made it upstairs, gun trained on the inside of the door, walking in quietly, as an old man turned around eyes widening as Joel spoke clearly,
"Put the gun down, slide it over to me and then stay up here for another hour. That's all you have to do."
Violet looked over at Joel, who struggled pleading as the man picked up his gun, Violet shot quickly, killing the man, Joel walked over to the gun and picked it up examining it before, Violet turned startled hearing walkie talkie static and then Kathleen started talking,
"Anthony? Anthony? Anthony, hold them where they are. We're almost there."
Joel and Violet met eyes as they started screaming for the group downstairs to run, Lily only had her gun, she could protect them all, and Ellie didn't have many bullets left.
The group starting running as they saw multiple cars pull up, one with a big plow on the end, Violet situated herself and pointed her sniper rifle at the approaching cars, Kathleen orders her people to clear the cars, as the car accelerated, Joel positioned his new sniper and aimed at the driver.
The driver pushed forward as the group struggled to run away, Ellie turned back and shot at the van as she fell forward, Violet and Joel aiming at the same time and shooting perfectly getting two drivers straight in the head.
Ellie, Lily, Sam and Henry hid behind a car before asking Ellie if she was okay to which she shrugged. Lily loaded her gun as Joel and Violet ducked after being seen by Perry.
They sent men after them as Kathleen walked forward, Violet freaking out internally there was so many of them. So many. Kathleen spoke,
"Dead end, Henry. Gonna step on out? Save us some time? No? That's all right. Doesn't matter."
They walked forward as Henry called out in fear, knowing this wouldn't end well, Violet looked at Joel worried as he smiled, unsure what to say or even what to do.
"I'll come out! Just let the kids go!"
Perry pointed towards where they were as Kathleen spoke viciously,
"No. Sorry. The girl is with the man who killed Bryan. And Sam... well, Sam's with you."
Henry panicked as he shouted, scared out of his mind, after everything he needed his brother to be okay. Lily held her gun handy, ready if need be,
"You don't understand!"
Kathleen sighed before speaking again, Violet thought she talked too much although she couldn't really hear what she was saying but Violet knew that she was saying some stupid shit about how he shouldn't have saved his brother.
"But I do. I know why you did what you did. But did you ever stop to think that maybe he was supposed to die?"
Lily held Ellie's hand as she took a deep breath before Henry shook his head, not quite believing what he was hearing, she was delusional, he spoke,
"He's just a fսck¡ng kid!"
Kathleen spoke more while Henry turned to Lily and instructed her to grab Ellie and Sam and go, Lily protested as Henry closed his eyes and reiterated that she had to go.
Henry walked out of the safe place, as he admitted defeat,
Kathleen pointing the gun at him before speaking menacingly.
"It ends the way it ends."
