as julia sits on the bathroom floor, sobbing, she is startled by the doorknob rattling.
"julia please come out, im sorry," ava pleads through the door.
julia rolls her eyes, wiping the tears with the sleeves of matt hoodie she's wearing. she stands up, clutching her phone in her hand and unlocks the door. as soon as she opens it, she wishes she hadnt. ava's body softens at the sight of her crying best friend.
"aw jules im sorry. i never should have commented on your realationship, when i didnt even witness the breakup," she says softly, wrapping her arms around julias neck. julia didnt return the hug, as she was trying to hold back more tears.
"you know that im always here for you right?" she says letting go of the hug.
"i know," she mumbles. julia knows that ava has been there for her since third grade, but she cant help thinking of how she wishes matt was here right now instead of her. and it eats at her, making her feel even more guilty.
"we can change the topic," ava says sweetly, trying to distract julia.
"i need to tell you something, but you cant be mad," julia begins.
"yeah, of course. anything," ava replies quickly.
she thinks for a moment, wondering if she should tell ava about her reason encounter with her brother, james. julia knew that she only needed a distraction from matt, but it didnt make her want to say yes any less. she knew if she was going to go out with james, she had to be completely honest with ava, from the stretch.
"i bumped into james on the way to the bathroom, i think im going to go out to lunch with him," she says calmly, waiting for a reaction.
"okay julia, thank you for telling me. but dont you think it's a bit fast? you on-"
"ava matts fanbase destroyed me and him. james doesnt have people that are ready to tear me down."
"i know j, i just want to make sure youre not getting yourself hurt. because we both know you love matt, always have, always will."
julia grimaces and shuts her eyes tightly. the mention of the boy whom she loves makes her mind spiral. instead of responding, she smiles weakily and walks down the hall. ava looks at her confusily and follows to see where she's going. to her surprise, she knocks on james's door and waits for him to open it.
"come on," julia says motioning towards the front door.
"oh- yeah sure," james replys with a smile ear to ear, holding his phone and following behind her.
"be gentle with her. i cant help her, maybe you can," ava says weakly.
"dude, chill. we're getting lunch?" james says, scoffing at the dramatics, not knowing why julia really wanted to go out all of a sudden.
and with that, julia and james left, leaving ava standing alone in the hallway. worrying about her best friend who was clearly in denial, but she was in no place to comment.

i thought i made it clear that i love you matt. through every bad time, every family incident, every fight. every boyfriend i had, or girlfriend you had, it was always fucking you. i love you and i will continue to love you until the day i die matt. but i can't stand MYSELF. i hate looking in the mirror, i hate reading comments about myself, i hate the way my voice sounds on recordings, i hate how insecure i feel on camera. i hate myself matt. so i struggle to believe that you or anyone else could ever really love me. and thats why i pushed you away. because your 'fans' see me for who i really am. a horrible friend and an ugly human being.
