when chishiya entered the jack of hearts building, he wasn't expecting to find companionship in a energetic girl
he noticed you as soon he walked in, you were smiling while playing with the hem of your shirt, excited for the game to start
he found this interesting as every other player looked nervous or bored, he was going to approach you when the game started but you seemed to have the same idea
"hello!" you said cheerfully "want to team up? everyone else is already together, and I really don't wanna be in that girls team" your eyes darted to the girl in the blue dress
chishiya nodded, since he already planned to team up with you
you all came out with no harm at the first round, but the second round there was already someone dying
the scared boy on the floor lied to the creepy bald man and you grimaced
"that skinny boy told him to lie" you said with confidence
"what makes you think that?"
"look at him, he's so suspicious, why would he help someone getting bullied? unless he has another motive in mind! telling him to lie about the suit, in return he will die and not bother him"
"that's..."
"an amazing observation? I know"
"not at all, actually"
you pouted "fine, what's your name by the way? I'm y/n"
"why should I tell you?"
"well, we're in a team, and I already said mine, so it's your turn, unless you want a nickname! how about...grumpy?" you said with excitement
"... I'd prefer you didn't"
"hmmm, old man? you don't look that old though... blondie?" you then started listing off various nicknames that chishiya didn't even understand
"chishiya, my name is chishiya" you clapped in happiness "finally, I knew you'd break! ugh, all that talking made me hungry, want a snack?"
"I could use some"
you went to the kitchen, scanning the shelves as chishiya grabbed a packet of cookies
finally deciding on a lollipop, you unwrapped it and sat on a table, watching with chishiya as everyone began eating or looking at their suits
"this is exciting, don't you think?" your voice was muffled as the lollipop was in between your lips “people are already starting to lie, who do you think the jack is?”
“you” chishiya munched on a cookie and you pouted “so mean, you’re such a bully, should i lie to you this time?”
ippei from the side looked at you with wide eyes “it’s just a joke, sorry” you said “i won’t lie to you guys, i may be dumb but i’m not getting rid of my allies”
more rounds went by went and ippei was getting more and more nervous “why are they all killing each other?!?”
“that bitch is crazier than me” you sighed
“are you really surprised? nobody wants to be the next to die” chishiya said
“do you think shes the jack?” ippei asked, your eyes scanned across the room, finding matsuhita enji “you see that emo guy?” you whispered
“yeah, what about him?” ippei said
“i think hes the jack” you said with confidence “he’s too cocky, he doesn’t speak to anyone except his teammate, although he isn’t the only one who does so, but maybe i’m not right, who knows? i could die tonight and i will never know who the jack was”
“i’m sure we’ll win!” ippei tried to cheer uou up “you’re strong and so is chishiya, if anyone is winning its you two”
more rounds went by, and eventually ippei died, he killed himself by not answering before the time was over
“you were too kind for this world, ippei” you frowned, you didn’t know him too long, and normally you wouldn’t care when someone dies in a game, but ippei was different, he was an actual good person
chishiya formed a plan, he would watch over certain players and you’d do the same, pretending like you don’t trust each other
you stayed inside the cafeteria and spotted the girl with short black her grabbing a snack packet the same one chishiya told you to look out for
“kotoko-san!” you said with a friendly smile and she backed away “would you mind telling me my symbol? my ally turned out to be a liar” you turned around to show her the collar and she didn’t give a response
“eh? okay fine, i’ll you yours first, if you want me to, yours is heart, whats mine? the same? or maybe spade?” no matter how much you spoke she didn’t give in
you sighed “it’s because of the guy you hang out with him huh? he thinks he can just dominate you? you’re pretty, and you have to be smart if you survived by yourself in these games, you don’t need him to be controlling your every move, but at least he is truthful, if you are just pretending like he’s controlling you…”
kotoko ended up walking up before you could finish, you sighed and leaned on the wall, and soon enough chishiya walked in
“did you see what she grabbed?” he asked
“mhm, the same thing you said she would get, you’re pretty observant” he hummed
“you’re a diamond, by the way” you looked up at him “you too”
now it was time, for what you know is going to be the final round
you got your symbol right, and so did chishiya, hearing the laugher coming out from the halls you couldn’t help but giggle
you heard chishiya step out and you did too
you started to laugh at his shocked face as the other two popped out of their rooms aswell
you covered your mouth, unable to contain your laugher “you are seriously so stupid, no way you actually thought you won?”
and like that, the jack of hearts was defeated, you walked out of the building with chishiya by your side, as the blimp exploded in the background you bit down on your pocky stick, stealing a couple snacks from the cafeteria, you even stashed some in chishiya’s pockets
“see you later, chishiya! i think i’ll go to a spades game, you’re probably gonna go to…a diamonds one?”
he nodded “stay alive, i’ll try my best too’
you walked away, hoping that you would actually see him again soon
BONUS
after you played the queen of spades, you met arisu and usagi, and they kind of just, stole you? you were a good addition to their team, and you helped them win the game, so here you were with arisu in the middle of shibuya, with only king of spades and queen of hearts left
“i wonder how many people are still alive” you sighed “i hope chishiya is fine”
arisu looked at you ‘you know chishiya?” you nodded “he was my teammate in the jack of hearts, if it weren’t for him i probably would’ve died very soon”
almost as if he heard you, you heard footsteps from behind you, and there he was
“fancy meeting you two here”
“chishiya!” you said with happiness laced in your voice
“there are only two games left, players are starting to gather in shibuya, i had a good hunch you were still alive, arisu, even you too y/n””
“it takes alot to kill me, i’m too smart for death”
“sure, we’ll say that”
“is that the only thing you’ve got to say?” arisu said
“so?”
“nothing, you’re just, alot less grumpy now” chishiya laughed at that “less grumpy? well, ive been through alot”
you wanted to ask if something went wrong at the diamonds game, but he started talking again
“can i share something with you, that i’ve never told anyone before?”
arisu chuckled “sure”
“well…i” he was cut off as a gunshot rang through the air, hitting him in his chest
arisu flinched and gasped while you almost screamed, your hands covered your mouth in shock
you ignored the man that shot him and ran to him, leaning on the ground next to him with your hands on his arm
“did you mean to miss a vital organ?”
“i don’t know who that is, but i’ve got enough for the both of you, let’s play a murder game, theres nothing else for us to do here” he continued to talk but you ignored him to focus on chishiya
you barely knew him, but he felt as if he was your brother, and you were beyond pissed at whoever this guy was
he threw two guns at you and chishiya, you didn’t know where he got them from but you grabbed it quickly, extremely ready to beat his ass
“leave y/n out of this, she didn’t do anything” arisu said
“i’ll be fine, arisu, i can handle myself, and i’m so going to enjoy beating the shit of this guy”
“try me” niragi said
“sounds like fun” chishiya grunted “we can settle things once and for all”
arisu tried to argue but niragi shot at him, making him stumble back to hide behind a car
you shot at him, but narrowly missing him
niragi shot at you and you moved backwards, chishiya went ot hide behind a car as he shot at him
you shot him again, and this time the bullet grazed his arm
he shot again and you hid next to chishiya
after some back and forth talking of arisu and niragi, arisu stood up, and then we saw usagi
“whats going on here?” usagi said and niragi smirked
“i almost forgot about you” he aimed his gun and began shooting, missing her a couple times, you shot up from beside chishiya and started to shoot at him aswell but he managed to back away and miss every single one
you stopped when chishiya grabbed your hand “what are you doing?” you asked, he looked like he was considering something
“don’t stop me” is all he said, and when niragi shot at usagi again, it didn’t hit her
it hit chishiya
you dropped your gun and ran to him, catching him as he fell
“chishiya! are you nuts?!’
“chishiya! you…saved me” usagi said, arisu had ran over from his spot, having hit niragi down “why did you do that?”
“i wanted to do something that was out of character, its thanks to the people i met here, like kuzuryu, arisu too, and…y/n”
“what were you going to say before?!” arisu asked
“oh yeah” he laughed painfully “honest people…always seemed stupid to me, ive always loved messing with people who try too hard at life, i hated selflessness, it’s probably because i was jealous
they had something i was missing, it was like they could always see what a pathetic and small minded person i really was, i was always afraid”
“i get it” arisu said
you had tears falling down your face, for the first time in months, possibly years, you were crying, all over a man you barely knew
“i thought you’d be the one to understand”
the king of spades blimp was getting closer, meaning it was time for his game, and more people started arriving, two girl specifically seeked out arisu and usagi, but you stayed by chishiya
“go with them” chshiya said, his eyes were closed, you shook your head
‘i won’t let you die here!”
“i’ll be okay, you’re not injured, just go, you can help them, you’re smart, aren't you?”
you shook your head “not enough for this”
“just go, you know…you kind of feel like my sibling, like…you’re my little sister” his hand grabbed onto yours, even though he was in pain he was still comforting you
“i don’t want my little sister to die, so go with them, survive with them” your tears fell freely as you grabbed his hand “i don’t want my big brother to die either”
he smiled slightly “but i’ll survive for him, stay alive, okay? thats a threat, if you die i’ll bring you back to life and kill you again”
“mhm” he didn’t have the energy to speak anymore, you propped him up so he would be hidden from the king of spades and left, going to arisu and usagi who were in between two cars with two other girls you didnt know
usagi looked at your tear stained face and pulled you closer to where she sat, giving you a side hug
you did end up defeating the king of spades, but not enough some bruises, usagi and arisu told you to stay, because you were badly injured, they would play queen of hearts together
you had a knife wound on your side, and one on your knee, it was not as bad as usagi’s, and a gunshot wound in your shoulder
it was painful, and your energy was running low, but if you were going to die, you wanted to die next to your only friend in this land
you eventually made it, the injuries making you extremely slow and having to take breaks to catch your breath, and you plopped down next to him, leaning your head on his shoulder
he was breathing, it wasn’t steady, but it was something
‘i guess i don’t have to kill you, huh?” you whispered, the only response you got was a faint breath and his head leaning to plant itself on yours
the sun was going down, it felt like days went by with nothing happening, when it was only a couple hours when the fireworks went off, and that robotic voice was heard all throughout the city
“All surviving players will be presented with two choice, players must now decide whether to accept permanent residency in this country or decline it”
the voice repeated itself
‘i don’t want it” you said, moving your arm slightly to grab ahold of your injury
“i…don't want it either, i think”
one fateful day in shibuya, you were walking around while looking down at your phone, not realizing as you bumped into someone
“sorry, i wasn’t looking where i was going” you bowed your head slightly, looking at the person in front of you, he had short blonde hair, and no exact expression on his face
“it’s fine, be careful where you walk, some people aren’t respectful here” you nodded and parted ways, not looking back
but then you heard the sound of fireworks going off, you turned around and looked up into the sky, that did not look like fireworks
a meteorite hit right in the heart of tokyo, taking out buildings, and the people who found themselves in the unfortunate moment
every were on the border between life and death, and some people’s hearts stopped, only for a minute
you were one of them
the meteorite caused you to have serious injuries, including one on your shoulder, your knee, and your side
you were bedridden inside the hospital, there were quite a few survivors, including a SDF officer, a doctor, and even a child, some were still asleep by the time you woke up from your short coma
it would take awhile for you to heal, but after a few days it was okay for you to walk around, your parents had died years ago, and the aunt you were living with died due to the meteorite, you had no known family to go to, and since you weren’t an adult yet, you had nothing
there was another high schooler in the hospital, you went to the same school, but you didn’t know her enough to ask to stay with her parents
so you were stuck in the hospital, and too old to go to an orphanage, your aunt’s money being the only thing left for you
you had a couple coins so you decided to get a snack, you were hungry, the food they served was good but you wanted something sweet
you found a vending machine and bought a cookie, you sat on a chair with your legs pulled to your chest and ate slowly
a few minutes later another patient sat near to you with a familiar bag of cookies
you recognized him as the man you bumped into before the meteorite, but why did it feel like you knew him from somewhere else?
“these ones taste better” he attempted to make small talk with you, but the way he said it seemed like you heard it before, like you were in a game with him and he had a weird obsession with the cookies
“really? i might get one later then” you responded, not knowing exactly what to say
“have we met before?” he asked “it feels like i know you”
you shrugged “i think we bumped into each other before everything happened, but maybe we saw each other before, you seem familiar to me too”
he just hummed “whats your name? mines y/n”
"why should I tell you?"
" I already said mine, so it's your turn, unless you want a nickname! how about..” you scanned his features, noticing how grumpy he looked, you used it to your advantage “grumpy?"
"... I'd prefer you didn't"
"hmmm, old man? you don't look that old though... blondie?" you listed a couple random nicknames, but then you started to cough harshly, your voice still not being used to talking for long periods of time
“chishiya” he said “my name is chishiya, don’t use your voice too much, i heard you were out longer than me”
“yeah, guess i was hit badly” you lowered your head, he reminded you of someone…but you can’t figure it out
“chishiya, let’s be friends, i don’t know how much longer i’ll be here for, but let’s get to know each other, maybe we’ll find out where we know each other”
he nodded “fine, let’s start by getting you something to drink, your voice sounds horrible”
“i was just dying, of course i sound horrible” you coughed again “stop talking, you’ll make it worse”
“fine, but you will be my friend! thats a threat by the way”
he rolled his eyes and handed you a bottle of water “yeah, whatever, come on, drink up”
he reminded you of an older brother, and you reminded him of a little sister, somehow, he’s glad that what happened, happened, if he got a good friend out of it
