A few days later, I got ready for bed and climbed in. I sighed. These few days have been a bit easier for me. I had been talking more with Anika and so we interacted more. Tomorrow I was supposed to go to India for a shoot. I had to get some sleep so I closed my eyes. Just when sleep started to overtake me, my phone began to ring. Anika, who was in bed as well, groaned.
"Anika, please get it yaar." I said sleepily.
"Hussain, it's your phone. You get it." She argued.
"You get it." I argued back.
"Hussain, jao (go)!" Anika said loudly and pulled the kambal over her head. Reluctantly I got up, putting on my slippers and answered the phone.
"Hello?" I said tiredly, sitting on the bed.
"Hussain, Zara's woken from her coma." I heard Dr Malik's voice.
"What?" I yelped, shocked.
"Yes, she woke up a few minutes back. Please come see me in my office." Saying that, Dr Malik cut the call. I ran downstairs, grabbing my car keys and phone.
"Hussain, kya hua (what happend)?" Mama walked over to me from the living room.
"I have to go to the hospital. Abhi." I panted. Mama nodded.
"Jao (go). Drive safely."
I rushed off to the hospital and went straight to Dr Malik's office. I knocked on the door.
"Come in" I heard his mumbled reply. I walked in quietly. Dr Malik looked up.
"Hussain. Sit down." He said gravely. I sat down on the black chair opposite him.
"There's a problem." Dr Malik sighed. I looked at him, not saying anything.
"Because Zara was in a coma all this time, she does not know any of the events that have occured during that time. In fact, she still thinks it's 2017. So we can't stress her out in any way. We need to slowly and calmly explain things to her. If not, she can go back into her coma and we might lose her." Dr Malik explained. I didn't know what to say. She was back. That's all I was glad for.
"May I meet her?" I asked. Dr Malik nodded. Together we walked to Zara's room. I went in while Dr Malik stayed outside. Zara was sleeping. I sat down on my usual chair and held her hand gently. She looked so different to yesterday. She didn't have the oxygen mask and the colour had returned to her face. I couldn't believe she was back. I made circles softly onto her hand with my thumb like I had always did.
Zara's P.O.V
I opened my eyes. I couldn't remember what had happend to me but I felt tired. I looked around the room. I was in a hospital. Why was I in a hospital?! What happend? I looked down to see someone holding my hand with their head on it. I moved my fingers as they felt numb. The person's head shot up. Hussain! But he looked so different. His beard had grown back and his hair was in a different style.
"Hussain." I whispered. Hussain's eyes filled up with tears, which scared me.
"Zara." Hussain sobbed. I lifted my hand to his face and wiped his tears.
"Kya hua? (What happend?) Why are you crying?" I asked quietly, getting emotional myself. Hussain took my hand and kissed the back of it.
"We...we were in a car accident." Hussain whispered. I started to think back but I couldn't remember anything.
"I can't remember.." I trailed off.
"You were in a coma, that's why." Hussain wiped his tears. I frowned.
"How long?" I asked.
"About a year. It's 2018 now." Hussain said. Woah. It's already 2018. I held Hussain's hand. He smiled at me, through his tears.
"I'm glad you're back. I missed you." Hussain said quietly. I smiled. My hand brushed over his fingers when I felt a ring on one of his fingers. Hussain was busy wiping his tears when I looked up at him.
"Hussain, are..are we married?" I asked. Hussain looked at me.
"Sorry, I can't remember." I smiled nervously. Hussain frowned slightly.
"N-no." He answered.
"But you're wearing a ring." I pointed out. Hussain looked at the ring with his red eyes.
"No, I mean, we are married." Hussain smiled through his tears.
"So how come you said no?" I frowned. My head started to throb in pain.
"Um, no, I was joking. Pagal. (Crazy.) How..how could you think we're not married? Don't worry." Hussain put his cold hand on my cheek and I put my hand on top, smiling. I let out the breath I was holding. So we were married. Good. I couldn't remember our wedding but at least we're married.
Hussain's P.O.V
"Um..you get some rest. I'll talk to the doctor about discharging you." I assured. Zara nodded, smiling. I walked out of the room. My mouth felt dry and I felt faint.
"Shit!..Shit!..Shit!..Shit! Shit!" I cussed, hitting my head with every word.
"Arghhh!" I groaned when a pain shot through the side of my head.
"Hussain?" I heard Dr Malik's voice behind me. I turned around.
"You..you told me not to stress her. But now I'm stressing myself!" I shouted like a madman. Dr Malik put a hand on my shoulder.
"Hussain, calm down. What are you talking about?" He asked in a calming voice. I let out a deep breath.
"She..she thinks I'm married to her. I'm not! But she can't know that because she'll get stressed. But I'm married because she told me to.." I trailed off, thinking hard.
"Oh no..okay, we need help." Dr Malik ran his hand through his hair.
"No, shit, really?" I gritted my teeth sarcastically.
"No, I'm saying this because Zara's suffering from amnesia." His words hit me hard.
"W-What? No, but she recognised me." I frowned.
"Zara has, what is known as, selective amnesia. She may remember some things but forget others." He explained.
"So what you're saying is that she might not remember that she told me to get married to someone else?" I asked, frowning. This can't be happening. Dr Malik nodded.
"What a great life of mine!" I said sarcastically.
"If she doesn't remember our wedding, I don't think she'll remember telling me that." I said to Dr Malik. He nodded.
"Which means we can't tell her the truth yet. She's still weak. Any type of unconsciousness, stroke or anything can kill her so emotional trauma is definitely not good." Dr Malik scratched his chin.
"Look, I'll think about it. For now, keep it up. You're an actor. You can do it." Dr Malik smiled. I sighed.
"Thanks Dr Malik. You helped a lot." I smiled back.
"Stop with the Dr Malik. Call me Azhar." Dr Malik grinned. I smiled and walked back into Zara's room. Zara had her eyes closed and looked so peaceful. My phone started to vibrate and so I went out into the corridor.
"Hello?"
"Hussain! Where are you?! I've called you so many times!" I heard Shehry blast in my ear.
"Shehry, calm down. I'm at the hospital." I tried to calm him.
"Calm down?! Pagal ho gaya tu? (Have you gone mad?) You have a effing flight to India in half an hour!" He yelled.
"Cancel it. I'm not going." I stated.
"What? Why?"
"Zara's woken up." I said.
"What? Oh my God! Okay, I'll cancel the flight." Shehry's voice turned softer. I cut the call and sighed.
Azhar's (Dr Malik) P.O.V
I held my head. I didn't know what to do for Zara and Hussain. It's only been a year that I've been a doctor and this was the most hardest case I've had. I tried to think when I heard knocking on my door.
"Come in." I called. Ayesha walked in. Ayesha was my older sister. She worked at the same hospital but as a psychologist.
"How's it going bhai?" She sat down, grinning cheerfully.
"Not good. Remember that patient I told you about? Zara?" I asked. Ayesha nodded.
"She woke up from her coma but she has selective amnesia and so she doesn't remember her wedding, or that she told Hussain to marry some other girl and now she thinks she and Hussain are married." I ranted.
"Hmm..I have an idea." Ayesha said. I nodded, gesturing to go on.
"Why don't we get Hussain to live with her? Together? And make it look like they are actually married. Hopefully it'll jog her memory." Ayesha explained. Hmm. That didn't seem like a bad idea.
"But I'm just saying this. If you want, I can see Zara and then come to a conclusion." Ayesha said.
"You are the best sister ever." I grinned broadly. Ayesha laughed.
"I know." Ayesha winked.
"I'll go get my stuff and put it here so I don't have to run back and forth." Ayesha stood up and left.
Ayesha's P.O.V
I picked up all the books I had on amnesia from my office and started walking to Azhar's office. I was glad to help since he was my little brother and I had always heard about this family from him. I started walking with those heavy books in my hand. I couldn't see where I was going so I had to keep looking to the side, in case someone was coming. However, to my unfortunate luck, the minute I looked back to the books, I bumped into somebody, making me and the books fall onto the ground.
"I'm so sorry!" The guy I had bumped into apologised. I got up and started picking up my books.
"It's fine. I smiled and picked up one of the books when he did too. I looked up at him and nearly fell back. He looked so familiar but I couldn't put my mind on who. He looked desi but then he looked American. He was.. handsome. His chocolate brown eyes twinkled while his perfectly chiselled jawline faced me.
"Um..hi." He said in his deep voice. I felt like fainting.
"Hi." I smiled nervously.
"If I could rearrange the alphabet, I'd put U and I together." The guy grinned. I raised my eyebrows. He's flirting with me. That too with the oldest line ever.
"I like it the way it is. With N and O together." I smirked. Playing hard to get. Good work Ayesha, I mentally high fived myself. The guy laughed, which sounded beautiful. I picked up the rest of my books.
"Dr. Malik. Related to Zayn Malik?" He grinned, handing me the books he had picked up. He must have read my name tag. I chuckled.
"No. I am Pakistani though." I smiled.
"Mein bhi Pakistan se aaya hoon. Teen saal pehle. (I'm from Pakistan too. 3 years ago.)" He smiled back. Pakistan..
"Whereabouts in Pakistan?" I asked curiously.
"Lahore." He smiled.
"I'm from Lahore too." I said excitedly.
"Acha? (Really?) So you studied there as well?" He asked. I shook my head.
"My parents are from Lahore. I came here when I was 3 years old." I smiled politely.
"What high school?" He asked.
"Jamaica High School." I answered. The guy had a look on his face.
"No wonder you looked so familiar...Ayesha Malik." He smirked. I frowned.
"How did you know my name?" I asked, confused.
"Remember me? Adil?" He grinned widely. I gasped. Adil! No wonder he looked familiar! Adil and I used to go to the same high school. Not just school, we were in the same class. For everything. But we weren't friends. We were the biggest enemies. Adil always used to tease me and I used to get annoyed at him. One time he had slapped me by accident and from then, we stopped talking to each other. The next day, I hear from my parents, who are friends with Adil's parents, that they had moved back to Pakistan for his dad's business. I was glad. But now..not so much.
"You!" I pointed my finger at him. Adil smirked back.
"Me. Have I gotten hotter or what?" He winked. I stopped myself from saying 'yes'.
"Stay away from me." I said coldly and walked to Azhar's office, leaving Adil there. Azhar looked up at me as soon as I entered.
"What's up? Why do you look so angry?" Azhar asked.
"No reason." I huffed. Azhar rolled his eyes and stood up.
"Girls.." He muttered as he passed by me. Azhar took me to Zara's room and I entered the room to see a guy sitting there with Zara.
"This is my sister, Ayesha. She's come to check up on you." Azhar introduced. I walked over to Zara.
"Hey Zara, how are you feeling?" I smiled.
"I had a bit of a headache but I'm fine now." She smiled back. I started checking her blood pressure.
"Hussain, can I have a word with you?" Azhar asked the guy, who must be Hussain. Hussain nodded and they both left the room. I continued with my task. For some reason, I kept thinking of Adil. Ugh. I hate his name. I hate him. And he had the nerve to flirt with me! I can't believe I thought he was good looking. Suddenly Adil entered the room. Speak of the devil. I scowled upon seeing him. Why was he here anyway?
"Hello mohtarma. (Madam.)" Adil winked. I ignored him and continued my job. Zara laughed.
"I'm so sorry Ayesha. This is my brother Adil. He's an idiot." Zara introduced. Brother?!
"She knows me yaar. We used to go to the same school when we lived here." Adil smirked at me. I tried to walk past him to leave but Adil blocked my path.
"Why are you avoiding me?" Adil asked, amused.
"I'm not." I frowned, trying to go around him but he blocked my path again.
"Yes you are." Adil smirked.
"Adil move! I'm trying to do my work." I shoved him gently when he grabbed my wrists, bringing me closer to him. I could feel his hot breath on me.
"You still want me to move?" He whispered. I couldn't talk. My heart was pounding fast.
"Get a room, you two!" I heard Zara say. We both quickly jumped back. I forgot Zara was in the room with us. This was so awkward.
"Erm..I'll get some coffee." Adil said quickly and rushed out of the room, bumping into Hussain in the process.
"Yo! Careful man!" Hussain called. Hussain walked into the room and sat down next to Zara. He held her hand gently.
"We'll be going home tomorrow. You can relax for now." Hussain smiled. Zara smiled back. I decided to give them some privacy and leave the room.
Hussain's P.O.V
The next day, I took Zara to the apartment that Azhar and Adil had fixed up for us.
"I'll go freshen up." Zara smiled while I locked the door.
"Do you need help?" I asked. Zara looked at me. Then it hit me.
"No! I didn't mean it like that. Like..you're weak.." I scratched the back of my neck in embarrassment. Zara chuckled and pinched my cheek.
"It's fine. I'll manage." Zara said and walked off. I smiled. I'm glad she's back. I decided to go to the other bathroom and freshen up myself.
Zara's P.O.V
After freshening up, I went to the kitchen to see what I could cook. It was already 1pm and neither me or Hussain had eaten anything. I made Maggi noodles and made a note to get more groceries.
"Hussain! Aajao! (Come!) I made food!" I called, getting plates out for us to eat. When I turned around, I nearly fainted. Hussain was standing there in nothing but a towel. Water slid down his wonderfully toned body. His hair was still wet. It's been a year since we're married but I couldn't remember anything. Maybe that's why I was feeling so awkward. I quickly turned around.
"Hussain, go wear something." I stammered. I was feeling breathless. Suddenly I felt water on my cheek and two hands slid around my waist.
"H-Hussain." I stammered, my heart pounding. The water droplets from his hair fell onto my shirt. His cheek touched mine, making it wet from the water.
"Zara." He whispered. His warm breath hit my face, his lips touching my cheek. I shivered at his touch. His wet chest wrapped my back and suddenly I felt safe, wrapped in his arms.
"H-Hussain. Food." I stuttered stupidly. Hussain let go of me and I turned around, careful not to look at his abs or his muscles. Suddenly his towel slipped down, making me scream and close my eyes tight. I heard Hussain laugh.
"Why are you laughing? Go put something on!" I shouted.
"No. Make me." Hussain chuckled.
"Hussain! Yaar, please, I'm too innocent!" I pleaded, my eyes still shut.
"Nahi. (No.)" Hussain giggled.
"Hussaaaain!" I whined.
"Aankhein khuli ho ya ho band. (Whether the eyes are open or closed.)" Hussain started to sing. Hayeeee! I missed that voice!
"Deedar unka hota hai..kaise kahoon main o yaara yeh pyaar kaise hota hai? (You can see her..how do I say my friend how love happens?)" Hussain sang. I giggled.
"Dil se. (From the heart.)" I laughed. Suddenly I felt Hussain close to me. Slowly he took my hands off my eyes. I gaped at him. He was wearing board shorts. Hussain burst out laughing.
"You should have seen your face! Itna darr! (So scared!)" Hussain laughed. I hit him which didn't affect him and he fell to the floor, still laughing, reminding me of the iDeewane bloopers. I started smiling myself.
"Love me that much, huh?" Hussain asked from the floor. I shook my head and started to walk away when Hussain pulled me down.
"Yaar, the Maggi is getting cold." I scowled. Hussain looked at me blankly.
"Maggi! No! We're going out. Chalo (let's go), get ready." Hussain got up. I got up as well when Hussain kissed my cheek. My cheek started burning up like it always did.
"You were looking cute." Hussain smirked and walked away. I laughed to myself and shook my head.
Waqas' P.O.V
I sat down at the table next to Rabia api. We were having our weekly Riaz dinner. Everyone was at the table. We started our dinner. Meanwhile, I was looking over at Mama and Baba. I hope they're in a good mood.
"Waqas, pass the roti." Khurram bhai called.
"Huh? Yeah." I said, dazed. I passed him the roti tray.
"I swear you'll get hit by your wife when you get married." Kamran joked. Did he know?
"What? Why?" I asked quickly.
"You're always so out of focus." He laughed. Oh damn. He was right.
"Speaking of marriage, when are you planning to get married, Waqas? You're going to be 29 this year. You have to get married soon." Baba started saying.
"If you want, I can look for you." Mama smiled. Before I could answer, Noshi api did it for me.
"Mama, he has so many fans. He can just marry one of them." She giggled.
"Yeah, I'll just propose to a random one, huh?" I asked sarcastically. They all laughed.
"If you want, I can fix you up with someone." Amber api winked.
"Nahi jee (No jee). I already found someone." I blurted. Everyone suddenly stopped.
"Kya? (What?)" Mama asked. I sighed. It was now or never.
"Um..I like this girl. And I want to marry her." I said awkwardly.
"Do we know her?" Baba asked.
"Her name is Faiza.." I trailed off.
"Faiza! You like Faiza!" Noshi api stated loudly.
"Mama, Baba, Faiza is a great girl. Modest, caring. She doesn't deserve Waqas." Khurram bhai explained. I shot a look at him. Baba looked at Mama. Mama looked over at me.
"Acha (okay), we'll talk to her parents." Mama smiled. YES! I quickly got up and hugged her.
"Thank you Mama!" I grinned
"Arey pagal (weirdo)! The wedding hasn't been fixed yet." Mama laughed.
"And you're thanking just Mama? Not your Baba?" Baba asked sternly. Everyone chuckled. I hugged Baba as well. I felt so happy! I'm getting married!
