A girl in her late teens with short flaxen hair by the name of Raine Kale sat at a glass kitchen table, sorting through mail. 'So this bill is 230 and this one is 138. That's...' she tapped an orange pen to her bottom lip and stared at the bills, concentrating. "...Was this all mommy sent for us this month?" she muttered to herself quietly and scratched at her head. She was never perfect with math. Even the simple problems.

"Ugh, I can't deal with this right now..." she stood slowly, hair swaying, and stretched her arms over her head. A low grumble sounded. "God, I'm hungry." she straightened out her navy blue school uniform skirt and removed the dark red blazer, revealing a white short sleeved button up shirt and black tie. "Okay, okay! Breakfast time."

Walking across the black and white checkered tiles, she grabbed an orange cereal bowl upon passing the kitchen island. She reached in a cabinet for some vanilla almond cereal.

Reaching for milk and a spoon, she prepared her lazy breakfast.

She brought a spoonful up into her mouth and-

-suddenly, her phone made a 'bzt bzt' sound. It startled her so much that she nearly spit out that single spoonful of cereal. But who could've texted her? The last person she texted was...

"Anna." read the contact id. 'It certainly wasn't Anna...' she thought bitterly.

Anna Parry to Raine Kale sent 7:15 am received 7:15 am December 12th, 2012

<>

Is your brother home?

Raine sighed. Didn't this girl have her brother's number? She had no time for his girlfriend.

<>

Idk

<>

Omigosh. Can you, laik, check plz?

Raine somehow sensed the snobby voice and attitude behind the text, and it pissed her off. And she was also a bit surprised that this girl even knew how to use commas...

<>

OMG. Can you hurry?

<>

Jesus. Fine. And how the hell did you get my number.

Anna didn't reply. Raine made a mental note to block her number and got up to head up the stairs. On her way up, her phone 'bzt'ed again. She didn't bother to check.

She reached the top and made a left turn. She passed her own room with a girly orange sign reading 'Rainy' and went a ways down the hall.

She stopped at a door with a yellow sign, equal in it's terms of boy-ishness that read 'Lenny'.

She went for the knob, but hesitated, going for a backhanded knock on the door instead.

"Len?"

No reply.

She knocked again, this time hearing rustling and a grunt. So he was home. She reached down and picked her phone out her skirt pocket.

NEW TEXT MSG

Anna Parry to Raine Kale sent 7:16 am received 7:16 am December 12th, 2012

<>

Well?

Cue an irritated sigh from Raine.

Raine Kale to Anna Parry sent 7:20 am December 12th, 2012

<>

Yes.

Short and sweet. She didn't want to have a conversation with girl. Not a second later, a reply was received.

<>

Good.

Raine turned off her phone and put it on the side table next to her brother's door. She knocked again.

"Len?"

"Mnnn... yess?" came the drowsy reply, followed by more rustling.

"You'll be late if you don't get ready now. I'm leaving early." she received a grunt as reply. 'Probably a "yeah, okay"' she thought, decoding her sibling's grunt.

Raine headed back down in the hall into her room, putting clips in her hair to pull the bangs out of her face. She reached for her black Jansport backpack and closed her door behind her.

Raine ran down the stairs and went into the kitchen to put her blazer back on, when she noticed the barely eaten and soggy cereal in a bowl on the table. She groaned.

'Goddammit' she thought. Anna's 'boyfriend tracking' shenanigans prevented her from eating. 'Guess I'll starve today...' Raine dumped the cereal in the sink and continued buttoning up her blazer.

She grabbed her house keys and prepared for her walk to school.

The second the house door closed, A drowsy Len Kale opened his bedroom door, clad in only plaid boxers, and began to get ready for school. 'Might be late if I try to eat breakfast...' he thought to himself. 'Guess I'll just starve today...'

It was currently homeroom. A pair of small pale brown hands slammed roughly on Raine's desk. Raine jerked upwards, only to find her smirking friend, Ty.

"Don't you find it strange?" she asked excitedly. Raine stared at her strangely. "Um. What am I finding strange, Ty?"

Ty giggled triumphantly and put her hands on her hips. "The fact that two years ago, people were freaking out about the 'Mayan Calendar' and the supposed 'End of the World'. And here we are, 9 days from said end and no one has said not a single anything about it!" she said, excited. Raine sighed. What had brought this up? Then again, Ty was always random, and her short attention span lead people to speculate that she might've had ADHD.

"First of all, your sentence is incorrect. It should be 'not a single thing' not 'not a single anything." Ty pouted, but immediately perked back up.

"You know I'm weird like that! Besides, doesn't it sound cuter that way?" Raine laughed a bit.

"Alright, alright, it actually does. But still. And don't go killing me and the rest of the world off before my birthday!" Raine scolded in a joking way.

December 27th. Her 18th birthday. She would be an adult soon. And wouldn't that suck to die just 6 days before that? And as a virgin too!

Raine was never one to fuss about sexual activity, and couldn't care less about it, as a matter of fact. But she felt that she wanted to feel that sensation of "waves of pleasure" (as some of her friends had put it), before she died.

"Ah! That's right! Your birthday is coming up, heheheh! I know just the perfect present!" Ty smile gently.

Raine smile back. Ty Anderson. Raine's best friend. She was a blasian (a black and asian mix), with very light brown skin, from her Afro-American father and the eyes of her mother, a Japanese business woman.

Ty was a very... Eccentric girl. Some who hadn't known her very well would say she was just plain mentally unstable. But her friends knew what she was really like and why.

She was always causing commotions, acting out, and sticking her head where it shouldn't be. She was loud and talked too much, often doing things before thinking them out. And while sometimes, it caused loads of trouble for Raine and her friends, a lot of times, her out-of-the-ordinary antics were fun and exciting.

Her hair was dyed a bright magenta-like red with drill-like curls held in two high short pigtails at the side of her head. The rest of her long abnormally colored curls went cascading down her back.

At the moment the two girls had finished chatting, their History teacher, Ms. Wallace, had walked in.

Ms. Wallace, preferred to be called Sweet Ann, was a young teacher with long blonde hair and blue eyes. She was looked up to by a lot of students and often had the male students ogling at her. It has been rumored that she was going out with the football team captain and popular senior, Al. Which would be illegal, and so the school was investigating.

Despite that, all her students loved her.

"Alright, class! It's nice to see you all so early in the morning." a few grunts. "Yes, yes. I know. You're all tired. But you have to drink your fill in of knowledge; So sit up and pay attention." she said in a strict, yet sweet caring voice.

She began writing down on the black bored facts and things about history that Raine couldn't be bothered with.

She stared out the window, at the leave-less swaying branches blanketed with icicles.

Her thoughts turned to something she constantly thought about.

Her brother.

Her very own Len Kale.

Oh, how sweet the times were when they were younger. How they always shared a bed, took baths together, snuck out of bed late at night to drink hot chocolate. Everything. She missed all of it.

And though she wanted it, ever so badly, they could never go back to those times. They had grown up.

And unfortunately, they had grown apart.

'When's the last time we had a full conversation' she thought to herself. Their talk nowadays consisted of him grunting replies through his room door, occasional "How was your day"s and some "sorry"s whenever they would bump into each other in the hall way. And mostly him texting that he wouldn't be home that night. That he would be at one of his many girlfriends' houses.

Those nights were so lonely.

But the loneliest, would be when he was there. Even though he was there, it just didn't feel like it, and that was so much worse than him not being there at all.

Truth be told, she missed her brother so much. She would rather have him smother her with love, or even just having arguments and fighting like other siblings would do!

She just wanted him back. One day, he just...out of the blue started avoiding her. It was a long period. Where he ignored her completely at school and at home. He didn't even send her passing glances. He just up and changed.

That time period lasted about a year. That was 5 years ago. When they were 13 going on 14.

Around the time he started messing with girls and staying out late, he had started talking to her again. But not like how they used to. Just normal, short and awkward small talk. Which had cut Raine deep in the heart. Because she knew. She had known that something went wrong. Something had changed that broke the sacred connection that siblings-no. That only twins could have with one another. And that something had forever broken that bond. It could never be fixed.

And she would never know what could possibly destroy their tight relationship that drastically and that quickly.

Just then, Raine was broken from her thoughts, by Ms. Wallace's disappointed voice.

"Oh Mr. Kale, you're 35 minutes late..."

'Wait...' Raine thought 'Homeroom was only 15 minutes... I was lost in my thoughts for a whole 20 minutes of class...? Time flies when you're distressed, huh...'

She then looked over to the open classroom door, her brother dramatically hunched over and panting. His blazer was open (as it usually was, no different, as opposed to his normally neatly buttoned shirt and neatly done ponytail), and his undershirt was buttoned wrong all over the place and with buttons opened. His tie was crooked and his hair was a little more disheveled than it usually was. His short stubby pony tail at the back of his head drooped and had some of his shoulder length golden hair falling out, due to him not putting it in right. He was covered in sweat and his bag hung messily over his left shoulder.

"I'm *pant* sorry.. I tried *pant* to get here as soon as *pant* possible..." he said in a broken sentence.

"Your sister has no problem getting here on time. Early even. Does she not wake you up...?" Ms. Wall-uh Sweet Ann looked towards Raine with an expectant glance. Len also turned towards her with an awkward and uncomfortable gaze. 'it's almost as if he doesn't like looking at me..' she thought.

"Um..." Raine began to Reply.

"We wake up at completely different times. She does try and wake me up, but I usually go back to sleep and she's usually already gone and can't wake me up a second time..." They usually get up at the same time, but Len was out late last night... Len lied for her. Raine inwardly thanked him.

"Ah. I see." said Sweet Ann. " Well then please Mr.Kale, invest in an alarm clock."

The class snickered as Len lightly blushed, but kept his cool, and walked to his desk.

Next to Raine.

'Curse alphabetical order...' she thought daily. It was awkward enough being in the same class. But of course, why not throw in having to sit next to one another?

Len's fangirl's swooned and waved at him, sending flirty glances and gestures. He smirked at the attention.

Raine rolled her bright teal eyes, identical to her brother's. 'He's so enjoying this' she thought.

She started looking back out the window as Sweet Ann once again began to teach for the remainder of class.

She swore she had seen her twin's reflection in the window, looking at her. His eyes clouded with an emotion unknown to Raine. He then looked away, oblivious to the fact that she was indirectly, yet directly staring straight back at him through the glass. Her brows furrowed.

'what was that look?'
