It is now a few more days later, and Nia is still staying with Kara, Lena, Alura and Morgan, although she has promised Kara and Lena that she has been apartment hunting. Lena and Kara are not too bothered about how long Nia stays though, because Alura and Morgan absolutely adore her, and Nia is more than happy to play with Alura and Morgan, no matter what activity they want to do. Nia has been swimming with the girls, played dress up, had a tea party, while also having played with a bunch of their toys. It seems that Nia being younger than Kara and Lena, and all the other adults that Alura and Morgan know, has allowed her to sort of create a very special bond with the two young children. Nia has been able to get in touch with her inner child, which has allowed her to get more in sync with Morgan and Alura. In fact, Lena and Kara know that when Nia does leave, and gets her own place, Morgan and Alura are going to be very sad. That is another reason that neither of them have even asked Nia about her apartment hunt. They don't want Nia to feel like they are prompting her, or rushing her to leave or anything.
Presently, it is late in the afternoon of a weekday. Nia is currently sitting on one of the couches in the living room, dozing in and out of sleep. Kara and Lena have noticed that Nia tends to sleep like this sometimes, but they have put it down to her narcolepsy. Kara and Lena are in the kitchen, just putting the finishing touches on their dinner for the evening, while Alura and Morgan are upstairs, playing or something.
"Okay. I think it's time to call the girls." Lena smiles, once she and Kara finish dishing up all the food onto 5 plates.
"Yeah. And wake Nia." Kara says, nodding her head in Nia's direction.
Lena simply chuckles at noticing Nia half asleep, or maybe completely asleep.
"Go on. You call the girls. I'll wake Nia." Lena says.
Kara nods her head, and then makes her way over to the staircase. Lena, meanwhile, walks over to Nia, about to wake her up.
"Girls! Dinner!" Kara yells up the stairs.
"Nia we...." Lena begins.
Suddenly Nia jerks awake.
"Morgan!" Nia yells out.
Nia quickly goes running out of the living room, and towards the staircase, while Morgan and Alura can both be heard running towards the stairs from upstairs. As Nia approaches the stairs, Kara notices Nia running towards her, and grows a confused look on her face. Nia soon runs up the stairs, and at the same time, Morgan and Alura begin to run down. However, just as Morgan and Alura get about 4 steps down the staircase, Morgan trips, and begins to fall over, with nowhere to catch her balance or anything. Thankfully though, Nia is just in time to grab her, and prevent her from falling.
"Gotcha!" Nia says, grabbing hold of Morgan, and breathing a big sigh of relief.
"Nia." Morgan says, letting out a shaky breath, clearly frightened by what just happened.
"Yeah, it's me." Nia smiles, while still holding Morgan close to her.
Meanwhile, Lori is just standing towards the bottom of the stairs now, with a confused look on her face, while Kara has a shocked one. Kara knows that somehow Nia knew that Morgan was going to fall, but she shouldn't have.
"Uhhhhh..... girls.... let's..... have dinner...." Kara says, in a slow manner, still a bit confused about what Nia just did.
"Yeah." Nia nods, and carefully places Morgan back down onto the ground.
Nia and Morgan then walk down the stairs, meeting Kara and Lori at the bottom.
"Are you okay, Morgan?" Kara asks.
"Yes, jeju." Morgan nods, while biting her lip slightly.
"Good." Kara says, "But that is why momma and I tell you and Lori not to run down the stairs like that. If it hadn't been for Nia, you could have really gotten hurt."
"Yes, okay. I promise to not run down the stairs anymore." Morgan says, in a cute voice.
"Good girl." Kara smiles, "Now, thank Nia for saving you."
"Thank you, Nia." Morgan says, turning to look at the young reporter.
"You're welcome. I'm just glad you're okay." Nia smiles, widely, at Morgan.
After this, Kara, Nia, Lena, Morgan and Alura all have their dinner, with them talking quietly throughout. During the dinner though, Kara's brain is filled up with thoughts as to how Nia knew about Morgan falling. Lena, for her part, doesn't even mention it, because she didn't really see what Nia did, and Kara hasn't had a chance to even explain it to her future wife.
After the group eat their dinner, they all sit in the living room and watch a movie, before Kara and Lena put Morgan and Alura to bed. It is at this point where Kara finally tells Lena about what Nia did.
"Are you sure that's what happened?" Lena asks, "Couldn't it be possible that Nia ran upstairs because she needed to go to the toilet or something, when she woke up?"
"No. She said Morgan's name before she ran up the stairs, you said!" Kara says.
"Yeah.... right...." Lena nods, "Maybe...... maybe she is able to see the future or something.... Maybe that is why she wants to get in contact with Supergirl?"
"Maybe, but she hasn't brought up meeting Supergirl to me since I mentioned it the first time I met her. I just.... I get the feeling it's a subject Nia is nervous about." Kara says.
"Well, I imagine she would be nervous about it, if it has something to do with her maybe being able to see the future." Lena says.
"Yeah, maybe." Kara nods.
"So, what do you want to do?" Lena asks.
Kara looks at Lena for a few seconds and sighs.
"I think we need to talk to Nia. I mean, I trust Nia completely. But.... I think that maybe if we actually get her to open up to us, about what is going on with her, we might be able to help her." Kara says, "Like, I doubt that she actually has narcolepsy. I think that might have something to do with whatever is going on with her."
"Yeah, you might be right." Lena nods.
Lena and Kara then walk back downstairs, into their living room, where they see Nia clearly nervously waiting for them.
"I guess..... we need to talk about what happened." Nia says, nervously.
Kara and Lena both nod their heads, and decide to take a seat parallel from Nia on a separate couch, wanting to give her some space, but not too much to make her think that they want to stay away from her or anything.
"Nia, before you begin...." Kara says, "We can tell that something is going on with you. We.... we trust you with Morgan and Alura. If you are not comfortable with telling us what happened.... or what is happening.... you don't have to. But..... we both hope you do tell us, simply because.... I think you are struggling.... and you need someone.... or multiple people.... to help you..... and we can do that."
Nia then proceeds to look at Lena and Kara for a few moments, before nodding her head and taking a deep breath.
"Okay." Nia says, "So..... I........ I know I have told you both that I'm trans..... but..... I'm also part alien."
"Okay." Lena nods.
"My mom.... she is from a planet called Naltor. My mom.... she had to flee her planet.... after it became unsafe for her.... because.... of the abilities she has...." Nia explains.
"What abilities?" Kara asks, curiously.
"Oneiromancy." Nia says.
Lena's eyes widen, while Kara remains confused.
"What's.... oneiro..... oneiromancy?" Kara asks.
"The ability to see the future through dreams." Lena clarifies.
Kara's eyes now widen.
"Wait.... So does that mean that you...." Kara begins.
"Yes. I.... I have inherited my mom's abilities." Nia confirms.
"So..... a little while ago.... you..... you saw what was going to happen to Morgan..... so you stopped it.... by running up the stairs and catching her.... before she could fall." Kara says.
"Yes." Nia nods, "But.... my dreams aren't clear. They are vague. I don't get clear pictures of the events that might happen. I have to decipher them. In the dream I had a little while ago.... all I saw was a toy...... rolling down some stairs.... and I heard a scream..... and then the toy lost a limb. The toy was one of the toys Morgan was playing with Alura and I yesterday."
Kara and Lena's eyes widen again.
"So.... are you telling us... you stopped Morgan from losing a limb?" Lena asks.
"No." Nia says, "I mean.... it could have just represented a broken bone. That..... that..... I'm not good at deciphering dreams..... I..... I'm not even meant to have these powers."
"What do you mean?" Kara asks, confused.
"These powers.... they have been in my mom's family for generations, and they have ALWAYS passed from mother to daughter, ALWAYS." Nia says, "And when my mom first came to Earth, she had a dream about her daughter becoming the next Dreamer. So, when my mom gave birth to me, she assumed her dream was about my older sister, Maeve, not me."
"Oh." Lena says, realising where some of Nia's distress is coming from.
"Maeve, she is the one that was supposed to get these powers. She has been preparing for it her whole life, and now I have them, and I can't even figure them out." Nia says.
Kara and Lena now share a look at one another.
"Nia, surely your mom would be able to help you?" Kara asks.
"No... she.... she can't.... because......." Nia begins.
"Because what?" Lena asks, confused.
"Because...... a few months ago..... I got a message from my mom and Maeve, saying that they had found a group of people who knew about all sorts of alien things, technologies, powers, and cultures, including Naltorians, and they could help Maeve access her powers." Nia explains.
Lena and Kara now look at one another again, because what Nia just described sounds very familiar to them.
"And.... what.... what has been worrying me..... is...... I have been getting emails..... from my mom.... and Maeve..... but.... a few weeks ago.... just before I moved out here to National City.... the emails stopped sounding like them..... It.... it sounded like someone else was writing them." Nia says.
"And that is why you wanted to speak with Supergirl?" Kara asks, "To ask her for her help in finding your mom and sister?"
"Yes, and.... and helping me with my powers maybe...." Nia says.
"Okay. But what I don't understand, Nia. Is..... if you have been worried about your mom and sister for a few weeks now, why have you been resisting asking me to get you in contact with Supergirl?" Kara asks.
"Because......... on the plane trip..... to National City..... I...... I had another dream....... This one..... it was different from the others.... It..... it felt more like a blurred vision, rather than having things which symbolise events that are going to happen." Nia explains.
"What happened in the dream?" Lena asks.
"In.... in my dream.... I saw..... Supergirl...... and...... she was fighting me...... and there were other people fighting Supergirl too..... Then.... the last thing I saw.... was her turning to look at me..... and her eyes glowing red with her heat vision." Nia says.
Kara and Lena now look at one another again, each with worried looks, even though they know Kara would never do something like that to Nia.
"And you're sure it's Supergirl?" Lena asks.
"I mean..... like I said.... it was a blurred image.... But.... it was clearly a woman's figure I saw..... and who else can fly.... has super strength, and heat vision other than Supergirl?" Nia asks.
"You're right." Kara says, taking a deep breath, "No other female does. But I promise you Nia, despite your vision, Supergirl will not hurt you."
"How can you know that?" Nia asks.
"Because, I'm Supergirl." Kara says, as she stands up and touches her glasses to activate her suit.
Nia's eyes are now the ones that widen, with her mouth opening in surprise. Nia doesn't say anything for a long while, several minutes.
"You're..... you're...." Nia begins.
"Supergirl." Kara finishes.
"But... I...... how do you.... I......... I don't understand." Nia says.
Lena chuckles.
"I think you broke Nia, darling." Lena smiles, playfully.
"Look, Nia." Kara says, "I am Supergirl, but Supergirl isn't really who I am. Supergirl is what I can do. Kara Danvers is who I am, and that is the person that you have been getting to know this last week and a bit."
"Yes.... I..... okay." Nia nods, taking everything in, "I just...... wow..... I guess..... looking at you..... I'm surprised that your glasses keep your identity a secret so well."
"People see what they want to see." Kara says, "They don't expect Kara Danvers, CatCo reporter, who rambles, gets flustered and embarrassed, to also be Supergirl, the girl of steel who fights bad guys on a weekly basis."
"Yeah.... that.... that might be right." Nia nods.
There is then another silence between the 3 women.
"Nia, what Kara is trying to show you, by telling you that she is Supergirl, is that she isn't going to hurt you, and she wants to help you. We both want to help you, in any way we can." Lena says.
"Wait!" Nia suddenly says, "Does this mean that Miss Grant knows you're Supergirl?"
"Maybe." Kara says.
"Yes." Lena says, at the same time.
Kara turns and looks at Lena after hearing her response.
"Oh, come on, darling." Lena says, "Cat absolutely knows you are Supergirl."
"Well.... she's never said directly...." Kara says.
"Because I doubt she would." Lena replies, "I think she probably likes that it's a topic that has never been directly addressed between you, it creates a sense of mystery, even if there is none."
"Hmmmm." Kara hums.
"So..... you can help me?" Nia asks, "You can..... help me find my mom and sister?"
Lena and Kara both look at each other with concerned looks on their faces upon hearing Nia say that.
"Nia...." Kara begins, with a sigh, "we know that group you were talking about who have said they are 'helping' your mom and sister, they are called Leviathan. They are not a good group of people at all. We have been fighting them for a while now. Just recently, they shot Lena's mom, Lillian, in the head, right in front of Lena. Thankfully Lillian recovered. However, before that, Morgan, her parents were lured here, to Earth, by Leviathan, and once they arrived, they were asked to join Leviathan, but when they refused, Leviathan killed Morgan's parents. It is just lucky Morgan got away."
"So... are..... are you saying my mom and sister are dead?" Nia now asks, in a distressed tone.
"No." Lena quickly says, "From what we know of Leviathan, they don't kill people when they have a use for them. They use people. That is what their tactic is, and has been. If they think that your mom and sister will be of use for them, because of the powers they may have, they will keep them, and use them."
"But Maeve doesn't have powers, I stole them from her!" Nia exclaims.
"No." Kara says, softly, "You didn't steal those powers from her. You said that the powers go from mother to daughter. All this proves is that no matter the gender you were assigned at birth, that isn't who you truly are. You are a woman, and even the powers know that. You didn't steal anything. Those powers, you inherited them by right of being a woman."
"Thank you." Nia says, now in a softer voice, "But.... that still doesn't change the fact that Maeve doesn't have these powers.... and if Leviathan figure out she doesn't..... they'll have no use of her."
"Unfortunately Nia, I don't think that's true." Lena says.
"What do you mean?" Nia asks, confused.
"The use for your sister..... would be a very simple one..... to force your mom to do as they say, and use her powers for their own means..... Your sister.... could just be a bargaining chip." Lena says.
Nia now grows another distressed look on her face.
"So.... if you know about this organisation, you know where they are? You know how to get to them?" Nia asks.
"No." Kara says, "They..... are very mysterious, and since the last time they attacked, over a month ago, we haven't heard anything from them. They have gone underground. But we know they will come back at some point. We just have to be patient, and be ready."
"I'm not sure I can do that. I.... I'm going to worry about my mom and sister all the time." Nia says.
"I know." Kara nods, "And I promise we will try and find out any information we can to find your mom. But we can't make any promises, not with Leviathan. Until then..... I think you need to train to use your powers, as it could be helpful, to all of us."
"No." Nia says.
"No?" Kara asks, confused.
"I.... I don't even want these powers." Nia says, "I wish I didn't have them."
Lena and Kara both give Nia a sympathetic look after hearing the young woman say that.
"I completely understand how you feel, Nia." Kara says, "When I first got to Earth, I suddenly had all these powers, as I didn't have powers like this on Krypton. And it was all hard for me. I was already this weird new girl at school, who cried at times, and got panic attacks from claustrophobia, or was just sad, as I thought about my family I'd lost. But at the same time, I had these powers, and they were so hard to control. I could hear things from miles and miles away, I could randomly see through walls, or people's bodies. Then I had to make sure to regulate my strength, so I didn't accidentally hurt anyone, or break anything and expose myself to the world. It was all a lot. There were times where I didn't want these powers I have, and I wanted to be normal. But at the end of the day, I'm glad I have these powers. They allow me to help people, and save people's lives, while also protecting the people I love. Yes, these powers can be a burden, but ultimately, I'm better with them, than without them."
After Kara finishes her little speech, Nia just looks at the blonde for a few moments, not saying anything, just taking everything in.
"You may have embraced your powers, but I'm not sure if I ever will." Nia eventually says, "I'm not even sure I want to be a super hero or anything."
"We are not saying you have to be a super hero." Lena says, "We are saying that you have these powers, whether you like it or not, and the best course of action to take, is for you to learn how to control them."
"Yeah." Kara agrees, "Lena and I have had similar situations with Alura and Morgan, helping them control their powers. That is why, if you have noticed, Alura and Morgan each wear bracelets all the time. It controls their powers. Now, that doesn't mean we want them to wear them forever. We just think it's best that they wear them until they completely have control of all the powers they have."
"Couldn't...... I have something like that?" Nia asks, "To.... suppress my powers?"
Kara and Lena both grow worried looks on their faces after Nia says that.
"Nia...." Lena says, with a sigh, and gets up from her couch and moves to sit next to Nia, "I'm not sure I would be able to do that for you. Your powers..... from how you have described them.... they are different to Alura's and Morgan's. They each, like Kara, get their powers thanks to the yellow sun. For you.... it sounds like something else. But..... I don't think you should try and hide your powers, and hide who you truly are. You have already been through this exact same thing in your life. You are a transgender woman, and what you are experiencing now, and some thoughts you are having, are thoughts that I imagine you may have had at times when you went through your whole process of discovering who you are. There may have been times when you just didn't want to be trans, and wanted to pretend to be the gender you were born as, but we both know that would have ultimately been a lie, just like this, suppressing your powers might be. You should never supress a part of yourself. You should embrace it. If everyone on Earth did that, I think this planet would be a much better place."
Once Lena finishes speaking, Nia looks at the brunette for a few moments in silence, before finally growing a smile on her face.
"Thank you." Nia says, "Hearing you say that..... someone who I have looked up to.... as an icon in the LGBTQ+ community...... really makes me feel better about myself.... I...... I really appreciate it."
"You're welcome." Lena smiles back, placing a hand on one of Nia's legs.
Kara now gets up and sits the other side of Nia.
"And Nia, if we were to help you understand your powers, and get a grasp on them, it wouldn't mean you would have to become a superhero. That would ultimately be your decision, no one else's. I would never tell you what to do in that regard." Kara says, "But, just like with Morgan and Alura, I don't think it would hurt for you to train just so you understand your powers, for your own protection, and everyone else's."
There is another moment of silence, as Nia looks at Kara this time.
"Yeah.... you're right. You both are." Nia eventually says.
Kara nods her head at Nia.
"But..... how..... how are you going to help me?" Nia asks, "My powers..... they are not like yours..... so it's not like we have a guide as to what I can do, and how we can train?"
"Give us a little credit, Nia." Lena smirks, "Kara and I are two very intelligent women, I'm sure if the three of us work together, we can figure everything out."
Kara now chuckles.
"Lena is over complementing me by calling me 'very intelligent', I'm nothing compared to her." Kara says, "But I am confident that if we work together, we will be able to help you, and work out your powers, and you don't have to just rely on us. We have other friends who can help too."
"Other friends?" Nia asks, curiously.
"Yes." Lena nods, "We have..... my birth mom..... who has some previous history with Leviathan, but we won't get into that now. There is then my mother, Lillian, but I doubt she's going to be much help. But we then move onto the people who actually might be able to help us, Alex, who has been working with Kara for a few years now, and even helped train her."
"Also, there is Winn" Kara continues, "who doesn't have any powers himself or anything, but he's a tech whiz, and I'm sure he'd be able to find something about Naltorians, by doing research. Then finally, there is J'onn, who is a Green Martian. He is sort of like a father to Alex and I, and he has helped train both me and Alex, and he knows a lot. He might even be familiar with Nalotrians."
"Yes." Lena nods, "And seeing as J'onn has mind reading abilities, he might be able to help you some way with your dreams."
"So, what do you say, Nia?" Kara asks.
"I say...... it's worth a try." Nia says.
Kara and Lena both break out into wide smiles upon hearing that, glad that they will be able to try and help Nia control her powers.
