Scenario 1:
You've been friends with Hugo for a while now. He doesn't talk a whole lot but he always listens, always has time for you, and gives the best hugs whenever you need one. You've always gotten the impression that there's more going on under the surface, that he's not okay. Smiles never really reach his eyes, but he never talks about it, and shrugs off all of your concerns with an insistence that he's okay. One night, at 3am, you get a call from him. There's a lot of background noise and chatter, like he's at a party, and you're confused, but then you hear his voice. It's shaky and a little slurred, like he's been drinking. And he has - he's been drinking a lot.
"H-Hey, y/n... sorry, I know it's late. Did I wake you up? I probably woke you up. I-I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I-I just... just..."
Before he can finish his sentence, he erupts into floods of tears, and all you can hear is him sobbing for a few seconds. He's inconsolable, but pulls himself together enough to ask what he phoned for.
"Can you come get me please?"

Scenario 2:
You go to Hugo's AA group (either as a fellow recovering addict or in support of someone close to you). Before every meeting, you see Hugo outside smoking, his hands a little shaky. When he sees you he gives you a small smile, and it's a nice smile. He always looks warm and genuine, if not a little nervous. After every meeting, you see him smoking again, this time leaning against his car, even shakier this time. Occasionally you say goodnight to each other. He never really speaks in meetings. Whenever the organiser asks them if they have anything to say, they just sort of shake their head and hold their hand up as a sort of 'pass'.
One meeting, the organiser coaxes more out of them because they're getting their 6 months sober chip. He looks a little uncomfortable as he speaks, eyes on the ground the whole time, leg bouncing up and down, rubbing the back of his neck or his face as he mumbles something about it being a long time coming, and then finally opens up.
"I keep waiting for things to get easier, you know? Like, waiting for the day I wake up and don't immediately want to drink. But everyday it just seems to me that the cravings get worse. It's like I'm just waiting to fuck up again. I don't know." He gets a little emotional, his voice shaky, reaching up to rub his eyes before he can get any more teary. They let out a nervous laugh and change the subject quickly. "Anyway, I, uh, thanks everyone for listening and, uh, yeah, your support and everything. I'm grateful. Thank you," they say very quickly, obviously wanting their turn to be over now.
They seem relieved when the attention is off them, spending the rest of the meeting playing with the 6 month chip, leg still bouncing.
Tonight, on your way out, you decide to actually go up to Hugo to congratulate him on the milestone, and he gives you a nervous smile, already reaching for his cigarettes.
"Thanks. I, uh, yeah, thanks. I'm Hugo, by the way. Sorry, I don't think I've ever introduced myself before," they say, trying to take the attention away from the chip they were holding so tightly in their hand that it was sure to make an indentation.
