The next day, Carter felt more worn out than ever before. The brunette was barely able to get a good nights sleep considering the events that took place last night. And her father's consistent and loud snoring did not help.

However, Carter was extremely thankful to Bella who had come to pick her up in the morning. The girl had almost had a heart attack when she saw Carter's dishevelled appearance and tired eyes. They still had time before school started so she had quickly pulled the Quileute girl back inside the house and sat her down in front of her mirror.

Now, Bella herself wasn't a makeup expert, but both the girls somehow managed to put some concealer under Carter's eyes to make her seem less dead. Carter had also kept her sunglasses, "just incase." She had said when Bella threw her a questioning look.

Carter was barely able to make it through her morning classes without struggling to fall asleep. Jasper had caught her face with his hand right before she slammed it into her desk and Angela had to nudge her awake when Ms Jackson had asked her a question in physics.

Currently, she was walking towards the cafeteria with Bella, her eyes barely open and Bella had to keep her upright. As soon as they entered, Bella pushed her towards their now usual table, telling Carter that she'd get her lunch. Carter muttered a small 'thank you' before making her way over towards her friends.

She shot them a tired smile as Theo scooted to make space for her friend. Carter slumped in her seat and let her head slam on the table causing Angela to let out a little wince on her behalf. Her friends continued talking amongst themselves, occasionally looking at Carter to make sure she was alive.

Soon, Bella was back with her and Carter's lunch who finally looked up at Bella, "have I mentioned that I love you?" She asked Bella who grinned at her best friend, "you have now."

Carter nodded at that and picked up a slice of apple just as Eric jumped up on the table, "hey! La Push, baby. You in?" He asked once the pale girl also joined their group.

Bella raised her eyebrows at him, "should I know what that means?" She asked, confused.

"La Push beach down at the Quileute Rez," Carter explained to her and she nodded slowly.

"We're going tomorrow, there's a big swell coming in," Jessica told her, Carter raised her eyebrows. Who knew Jessica Stanley liked to surf.

Eric suddenly jumped up, posing as if he was surfing, "and I don't just surf the Internet." He stated as Mike joined him in standing up on the table. Carter rose an eyebrow at the two boys as Jessica rolled her eyes, "you stood up once," she scoffed, "on a foam board."

Angela ignored them, turning to Bella and Carter. She gripped Carter's hand and turned to look at Bella, "there's whale watching too, come with us." She pleaded with her two new friends.

"La Push, baby. It's La Push." Eric nodded as if he could hypnotise them into coming. Bella chuckled, picking up a piece of cucumber, "ok we'll come if you stop saying that alright." She said for the both of them.

Carter nodded before putting her head on Angela's shoulder and closing her eyes. Angela wrapped an arm around her shoulders and settled into a more comfortable position for her friend.

Bella went to get herself some salad as the rest of the group went back to discussing their trip to La Push on the following day.

"The poor girl must be so confused." Theo mumbled next to Carter, "hmm?" Carter asked causing Theo to simply nod her head in Bella's direction where she stood next to Edward.

Carter's head shot up, "I swear to god that boy is bipolar," Carter shook her head and started eating her lunch. A few colourful words appeared in her mind, all directed towards the copper haired boy who stood next to her best friend.

She glared at the boy one last time as he turned to look at her before turning her attention back to her sandwich

"Dad!" Carter yelled, closing the door using her foot as she threw her bag on one of the chairs.

"In here!" Her dads voice called out from the kitchen. Carter's eyes widened at the smoke that slowly left the kitchen and the smell of burnt cookies overwhelmed her.

She hurried inside to see her father coughing, as he waved the smoke away from his face. He glared at the tray of charcoal cookies and took off his apron, a little aggressively, in Carter's opinion.

Jack put it on the counter and turned to look at Carter who was trying her best not to laugh.

He glared at her playfully before ruffling her hair, "get ready, we're going to Harry and Sue's today. They're having a bonfire."

"Awesome." Carter grinned in return before running upstairs to get ready.

After freshening up, Carter took out a purple hoodie to keep her warm as it always happened to be colder at night down at the reservation. She decided to keep her black jeans on and her white converse.

She headed into the washroom to heat up her straightening iron, her eyes falling on her tattoo. More like the white scar mark that laid beneath it. She shook her head just as the straightener beeped, indicating that it was heated.

She took a few stands of her hair and used the iron to make some of her waves even more prominent. After that, she applied some concealer and tint along with some mascara.

Carter left the bathroom just as her dad called out to her, "Carter, let's go, honey!"

She rushed down the stairs to see her dad standing in the hallway, "careful! I don't want you falling." Jack scolded her, remembering all the times Carter would tumble down the stairs because she would often trip.

"Yeah, got it." She said, skipping the last step and jumping in front of her dad with a grin. He chuckled at her daughter and patted her cheek affectionately before putting an ark around her shoulders and pulling her out the door.

"Let's go, we're already late." He said as he locked the front door, Carter rolled her eyes, "Yeah, cause someone decided to burn a batch of cookies." She scoffed.

Jack pointed a threatening finger towards her as they walked towards his car, "no sass." He stated and Carter rose her arms in surrender, "understood, officer." She smiled.

"Look who decided to join!" Billy Black cheered as the father daughter duo made their way over towards the small group. Carter grinned as she made her way towards Harry and Sue Clearwater, giving them each a big hug before hugging Billy too.

Harry patted her back as he laughed loudly, "god, I sure did miss ya Carter. It's not easy takin' care of your ol' man, is it?" He asked her, causing her to chuckle and shake her head, "you're completely right, Harry. It ain't easy, but I manage." She laughed.

Her dad looked at the both of them with disappointment, "c'mon guys, really? While I'm standing here?" He asked as Sue passed him a beer bottle.

Carter turned to smile at Jake who now stood next to her and gave him a half hug. Just then, a pit of boys made their way over towards her dad and greeted him.

Jack greeted them joyfully and turned to Carter, "Cart, I'd like you to meet Sam Uley and Jared Cameron." He introduced as Carter gave them both a tight lipped smile. One which Sam returned.

He stretched his hand out to her and smiled, "it's nice to meet you, Carter. Jack's told us a lot about you." He said as Carter shook his hand.

"Never shuts up about you, more like." Jared interrupted, before lending his hand out as well and shaking hers after Sam.

"It's nice to meet you, I'm Jared." He winked. Carter grinned at him, "it's good to know he missed me just as much as I missed him." She stated.

She talked a bit more with the two boys before Sue pulled her away. She led her towards another girl, who looked around Carter's age with short hair and her arms crossed.

"Carter, I don't know if you remember it's been so long," she chuckled, "this is Leah, my daughter." She introduced the two of them before leaving them to talk.

The two girls stood together for a while, not saying anything to each other and Carter felt like she was eight years old again, when her parents would make her talk to other kids so she could make more friends.

"You wanna go sit?" Leah asked her, awkwardly pointing towards the chairs and Carter agreed. The two sat in silence for a little while more and Carter turned to look at Leah for a moment.

She saw the girl glaring at something in the distance and followed her line of sight. It was Sam and Jared, who sat together with a girl cuddled into Sam, they seemed to be laughing about something.

Carter turned back to look at Leah and before she could stop herself, "so what's the story?" She blurted out, and as soon as she did, she wished she had the common sense to know when to shut up.

"What story?" Leah asked, confused about Carter random and sudden question.

Well, Carter thought, might as well ask and get over with it.

"You and Sam." She stated as Leah looked at her in shock and rage, "there's no story!" Leah snapped, harshly and Carter immediately backed up.

"Sorry," she mumbled quietly, "I shouldn't have asked, it's not my place." She apologised just as Leah sighed in defeat, "don't apologise," she muttered, her shoulders sagging as if she was suddenly exhausted.

"It's not your fault to be curious," Leah said, "Sam and I used to date." She told Carter with a sad smile.

Carter stared at her for a few seconds, "what happened?" She asked in a small voice. Leah shrugged, "He met my cousin," she rolled her eyes, "that's her. Emily."

"Wow," Carter nodded, "that's shitty." She said, causing Leah to snort, "tell me about it."

"I mean, at least he had the common decency to break up with you." Carter shrugged, "I caught my ex boyfriend cheating on me," she told Leah, who looked at her in surprise, and Carter chuckled.

Leah let out a sound of shock, "what the fuck?" She whispered, causing Carter to laugh, "Yeah." She whispered back.

The two shared a laugh at that and Carter was happy that she was able to better Leah's mood.

"Hey, I know this really amazing ice cream place," Carter offered, "if you ever wanna go with?" She asked causing Leah to smile, "Yeah I'd love that. Thanks, Carter."
