It was ten years ago when the first sightings of the deadly virus were discovered all over the world. It caused death among millions and lockdowns were forced in all countries. It was the first time humanity faced an abomination after decades and it took the world by storm.

Two years after and humans as their nature began to forget. Lockdowns were lifted and lives were continued as if nothing happened.
Inferior vaccines were given and people thought they were safe. Unless those among the unfortunate who watched a family member rest in peace continued to take extreme caution against another unpredictable wave of infection. However, the majority of the world presumed their lives unaware of the beast lurking in the darkness.

The same deadly virus kept changing forms and evolve with numerous reports across the globe but governments decided to favor money over lives and forced the media to give little to no information about the virus anymore.

A couple of years after and it reached its final form a live video on social media went viral for 10 minutes about a man waking up after having a heart attack and presumably die. The first sighting of a zombie. He attacked everyone around him and blood splattered all over the room.

The video was quickly taken down and the media said it was fake and made up but few people kept posting online about it. They became fewer and fewer because anyone who said anything about it, the account would be taken down immediately.

A month later and humanity still lived in denial until an image was shared on the internet. A photo of a crowded stadium but the crowd was not people. It was a crowd of zombies and the stadium was covered in blood. Under the image was written "I don't know why they keep silencing us. I don't know how much time I have left before I turn. I don't know how or where you will see this. If you see this know it is the truth. Death. Is. Coming. RUN!"

And now. The year 2030. In a Place formally known as Japan. Now called humanity's last stand. Yes, it was the last known safe place on earth. Major powerhouse countries were brought down by the plague and became a wasteland, or for a better word, a zombie land.

Yuzu Aihara, a member of a special force with a mission to search, rescue and destroy was outside the country taking cover behind a car with a sniper rifle aiming at a zombie's head after she sighted a life sign inside of a store but before they go in they need to eliminate the zombies crawling around the store.

"Alpha in position"
"on my mark"
"ready"
"shoot!"

Yuzu gave the signal and all the zombies were blown to the ground. They proceeded with caution inside the store finding a couple more zombies and killing them. They reached a closed door and Yuzu pulled out her device.
"the signal is coming from here"

They broke the door and found an unconscious girl laying on the floor. Yuzu raised her hand stopping them from shooting. She scanned her and found no traces of infection. They took the girl back to the base for further testing and treatment.

"hey boss!" a soldier called out to Yuzu making her turn around.
"you dropped this" he handed her a picture and Yuzu took it. She stared at it with a tear dropping from her eye. She nodded and thanked him then stuffed it inside her gear.

"Yuzucchi?" Yuzu looked up at her and saw her friend.
"you good?" Yuzu hugged her tightly burying her face between her neck to cover her sobbing face as she shed some tears.

They stood like this for a minute with Harumin patting her back as she knows exactly what her friend feels.

Yuzu calmed down and broke the hug sniffing a couple of times.
"I'm taking a break for a week" she said wiping her face.
"The team is in your care, Alpha"

Harumin smiled softly.
"don't worry Yuzucchi. You can depend on me" she said giving her a thumbs up.

Yuzu smiled to herself a small one. "Always"

Yuzu grabbed her gear and reached for her car. She put her sunglasses on and started to drive. The sundown breeze hit her face making her brown hair sway with what's left of the golden strands.
'Yuzu, why don't you reapply your dye'
"I don't feel like it, Mama. With everything that's going on it's not an important thing to focus on"

Yuzu shed a tear at the memory and almost missed a red light but she stopped at the last second.
'Just promise me you will be safe'
"don't worry mama, me and Harumin have each other's back"

She decided to dry out this river of memories and concentrate on the road. She drove to her home. It was a house between the woods not too far from the base and near a small town. She stopped her car taking her bag with her and entered her home.
It wasn't a small house yet it only contained a single bedroom with a bathroom and a kitchen. The rest of the house was a gym, a small firing range, and a room with communication devices. It was basically a small base for Yuzu.

She entered the lonely house having no one to live with aside from the occasional sleepovers she had with Harumin. She dropped her stuff and entered her bedroom. She stood before a safe in the wall with a hand scanner beside it. She scanned her hand and a secret door opened revealing a room with devices monitoring vitals and a capsule attached to the wall.
'YOU CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS. YOU WILL GET YOURSELF KILLED!'
"I'M DOING THIS FOR ME, FOR YOU, FOR US TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE A BETTER FUTURE. DOESN'T THAT MATTER!"
'THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS TO STAY ALIVE!'
"YEAH WHATEVER I WILL BE LATE FOR THE TRAINING!"

"Hey Mei" Yuzu stood in front of the capsule and put her hand on the glass then rested her forehead on it.
"I missed you"

Inside the capsule was resting the sleeping beauty Mei Aihara.

A cursed day after Yuzu got home with Harumin from training. She was worried the whole time because she kept calling but no one answered. Harumin was trying to calm her down but it was of no use. They reached Yuzu's apartment and before opening the door, Yuzu smelled a very known scent to her. The scent of blood and death. She froze with a shocked face and Harumin took the keys from her and opened the door slowly. A strong smell attacked her nose that she had to cover it. She held Yuzu with her free hand and entered the apartment.

Blood everywhere was all they could see and Yuzu was still frozen in shock. Harumin proceeded taking out her gun and pointing it forward. She heard a sound from Yuzu's room and carefully looked through the small opening of the door. She saw in the mirror someone with black hair leaning on the floor with her head twitching from side to side. She knew exactly what it was. She saw it multiple times. It was a zombie eating. But, she also knew who in this house had long black hair and. Looking back at Yuzu, the shocked face she was making told her she is unable to do anything at the moment.

Harumin changed her gun to a taser gun they used to capture zombies without killing them and hit Mei with it.

The army was involved and the whole area was locked down for a long time. Everyone was tested yet everyone came out clean. Nobody knew how this virus came to Mei and the investigation ended up burning the whole building to destroy any remnants of the virus.

On that day, five heads were found. Yuzu lost a mother and a stepfather. Lost a sister and two friends. Harumin lost the girl she planned to propose to and her sister lost the woman she loved and was engaged to.

Ume Aihara
Sho Aihara
Matsuri Mizusawa
Himeko Momokino
Maruta Kayo
Were all pronounced dead that day.

"Everything is going ok these days" Yuzu was talking to the unconscious Mei not expecting a reply.
"oh and I'm sorry" her head dropped down in sadness and took out the picture.
"I... I almost dropped this" she brought it in front of Mei and looked at it with a small smile between her tears.
"remember this Mei? It's our picture together when that old lady made us try out wedding dresses" she gulped her dry throat and looked at Mei.
"I.. uh... I will leave this with you it's safer here than with me" she hung the picture on the wall close to the capsule.
"I don't need it" she took a long look at it then looked back at Mei clenching the necklace above her heart.
"you are always here with me" she turned around heading back to the secret door then looked back at Mei before leaving.
"I love you... So... So much"

She left the room closing the hidden door and continued to cry her heart out as she started a workout.
She kept Mei in the hope someday they find a cure.
Someday either by death or treatment. Someday she will be reunited with the woman she swore that she will be forever in her heart.

The End.
