Lake Hill is a town where everyone makes a process and a big effort in here, homelessness, poverty, classism, publicity, humanity and more.
Fifteen year old Laurel Blaine had came from the foster care many times, after her mother died and her father went to state prison for life.
Every foster family she's been through was tumultuous and unruly, ever since she was seven, social services took her away.
Her and her father had strained and difficult relationship, he never spent time with her, he was fixated with drugs and alcohol, and he constantly blames her for everything.
In elementary school, all of the kids made fun of Laurel due to living in a unsafe environment and being poor.
Also, when Laurel was sent to prison after the abuse that she's been with her fifth foster dad.
She stayed there until she got bail from the lawyer, Nessa Holmes, a lesbian lawyer.
Nessa had bailed Laurel out of prison, she insist that Laurel will not cause any crimes, which is one that she committed.
Laurel Blaine moved in with the Holmes family, Nessa with a wife, has five foster kids with two daughters and three sons.
The Holmes are a traditional middle-lower class family, but has a nice house as well, the Holmes didn't grew up to be spoiled, they grew up with tolerance, empathy and respect.
Laurel also has a half sister from her father's side, Genova. Her father walked out on her at the day of her birth, after that her mother was unfit to take care of her so she abandoned her, and put Genova on a door step.
Laurel has to deal with living with foster parents, while Genova has to deal with her own.
Although Laurel has to public school, and she wants to become a normal teenager and student in order to have her future.
