“We suffer from an incurable
malady: HOPE”

_Mahmoud Darwesh_

•____________•

She sat on the single sofa looking at her cousins who were frantically moving here and there across the room.
Some grabbing their dresses and rushing to change while others who were already dressed up, sitting infront of the mirror doing their make up.

Her gaze went to Zainab who had just entered the room and was now walking towards her clad in her golden shararah with an orange kurti over it. The net orange dupatta with golden kiran border was spread over her shoulders and her beautiful black hair were braided and placed over her right shoulder. She was wearing yellow flower bangles around her wrists and small golden jhumkis in her ears making her look stunning.

She walked towards Shanzay with a smile.
Shanzay herself was dressed up in a plain yellow long net frock paired with yellow choori pajama. The frock reached her ankles. Her feet clad in yellow khussas. Yellow net dupatta was draped over her shoulders.
Her light brown straight waterfall fell down her back untied making her look so simple yet so gorgeous.
The only jewelery she was carrying were the small yellow rose shaped studs that adorned her ears. A light peach lip gloss and mascara was the only makeup she wore.

Zainab took a seat beside her,
"MaSha'Allah, you are looking beautiful".

Shanzay smiled,
"You yourself are looking gorgeous".

Zainab dismissed her words as she spoke teasingly,
"Nah behan, tumhara phir bhi muqabla nahi kersaktay. Qayamat dha rahi ho tum tou".

Shanzay chuckled, lightly hitting her shoulder playfully,
"Bus kerdo Zainab, itnay maskay na lagao mujhe".

Zainab laughed at her words when all of a sudden her gaze went to the figure entering the lounge.
The other second she immediately turned her face to the otherside in distaste,
"Astaghfirullah"!

Shanzay's attention was snapped towards her. She looked at her in confusion.

"What happened"?
She asked.

Zainab gestured towards the entrance of the lounge with her eyes.

Shanzay swept her gaze away from her until it rested at where Zainab was pointing.

There stood Shahana, Faseeha mami's eldest daughter talking to one of her cousins.
She was clad in a vibrant pink coloured short kameez and dark blue coloured patyala shalwar with the multi colored dupatta draped on her shoulder and her hair left untied on her shoulders.
The dark glittery blue eye shadow adorned her eyelids and a deep pink shade adorned  her lips as the deep lining of Kajal lined her eyes.

But it wasn't what left Shanzay dumbfounded.
It was the gold, a real gold choker hugging her neck along with a heavy gold forehead chain, Matha Patti adorning her forehead as the gold jhumkas dangled in her ears as she conversed something with her cousins laughing at something they were saying.

Shanzay looked at her dumbstruck, at loss of words.
She couldn't make herself speak for few seconds before she finally found her voice and spoke with astonishment,
"Why does it seem like she is the bride"?
Upon hearing the soft giggling beside her, Shanzay finally snapped out of the shock and turned her attention away from Shahana and looked at Zainab who was trying hard to control her laughter.

A frown laced Shanzay's forehead,
"Tumhain q hansı arahi hai?  Buri baat. Wo dekhain gi tou Kiya sochain gi"?

Zainab leaned towards her a little as she whispered,
"In mohtarma ko dekh ker kış ki hansı rukay gi. Bunday ko spotlight main anay k liya itna over kısam Ka fashion bhi nahi kerna chahiye. Ooper say Sara zevar pehn ker dikhanay agayee. Trust me, even the bride wouldn't wear this much gold on her mayon".

Shanzay sighed looking at her helplessly,
"You shouldn't say this Zainab. Buri baat hai. Wo bari hain hum say".

Zainab snickered sarcastically shaking her head,
"Baray honay Ka Koi farz tou ada nahi kiya, ulta baray honay Ka faida utha ker jis ko chahay beizzat kerdeti hain Faseeha chachi ki tarha".

Shanzay sighed knowing it was futile to reason with Zainab as she tried to divert her mind and turned her attention towards her cousins only to inwardly groan seeing Shahana now approaching her frame with two of her maternal side cousins that were for sure daughters of her Sabeeha khala.

She stopped a step away from them and leaned a bit towards Shanzay.
Shanzay immediately moved back in confusion at the sudden movement. She was actually taken aback at Shahana suddenly invading her private space.

Shahana raised her hand and touched her rose shaped small studs glancing at them for a second before turning her Kajal lined eyes back towards Shanzay as she enquired,
"Gold k hain"?
Shanzay couldn't help but notice the mockery lacing her tone.

Shanzay raised her head and looked into her kajal lined eyes in utter confusion, not understanding what she was trying to say.
"G"?

"I'm asking are these gold studs"?
She asked again, irritation lacing her tone.

Shanzay gulped and shook her head in no, not understanding why she was asking this.
Shahana chuckled sarcastically letting go of her studs and folded her hands on her chest.
She leaned a bit so that now she was on an eye level with Shanzay and asked almost in a sarcastic, humiliating way,
"Don't you have any gold to wear"?

Shanzay's brows twitched more in confusion, not understanding why she was behaving this way, almost as if she was mocking her and having fun, trying to ridicule her somehow.

She didn't know what to do. She was left utterly speechless since she had never encountered a situation like this before.

"What do you mean? I don't understand".
Shanzay truthfully voiced her confusion.

"Tch Tch! Tumhain nahi maloom sona Kitna zaroori hai aurat k liye? Tumhara paas nahi hai tou main de dn"?
She asked mockingly.
Her cousins chuckled behind at her words.

Shanzay's face reddened at the humiliation and insult in her tone.
What the heck was she saying?
What did gold had to do with being a woman?
Shanzay had never heard such a ridiculous thing before.

Zainab's enraged voice echoed,
"Why don't you keep this sick mentality of yours to yourself and instead of rubbing insult of not having gold on her face, why don't you go and look at your reflection in the mirror and ponder at what good has this gold done to your frame or has it even brought any difference because what I see you still have that disgusting personality. Shahana dear, gold doesn't make one woman superior over the other one. Jahalat say nikal ao "!

Shahana's face fumed red as she turned towards Zainab ready to kill her,
" Bakwas bund Karo tüm, baat nahi ki tüm say main nay"!

"Baat na hi karo tou acha hai q k Bakwas main nahi tüm is say ker rahi ho. Just like the way you are rubbing your gold on her face, she can rub her education too magar wo Kiya hai na k taleem insan ko shaoor deti hai aur ye baat tou apko samajh ani nahi".
Zainab snapped back at her looking directly in her eyes.
Shanzay grabbed Zainab's arm to make her stop but Zainab didn't even budge neither did she remove her glaring orbs from Shahana's glowering gaze.

Shanzay didn't like such cat fights at all. She didn't want Zainab to further escalate the banter.
For Shanzay, it was better to ignore such people and not waste their energy on them for the peace of her own mind.

Shahana's nostrils flared,
"Main mun tor dn gi tumhara".

Zainab huffed,
"Do it, after all what else can you do"?

Shahana was ready to advance towards Zainab but her cousin pulled her fuming frame away from there making Shanzay heave out a sigh of relief.

She than turned towards Zainab and gave her a pointed glare,
"Kitni badtameezi ki tüm nay un say. Wo bari hain hum say Zainab".

Zainab rolled her eyes,
"Khud tou bari tameez dikhati hain wo jaisay. If she can't respect us, why should we even bother? Dekha nahi kaisay apna gold flaunt ker rahi thi? Ajeeb hai bilkul"!

"But you shouldn't have taunted her for her education. What would she be thinking about us"?
Shanzay sighed shaking her head in disappointment.
She was never one of those people that belittled others or tried to stoop to their level just to teach the other person a lesson.
She didn't like this at all.

Zainab looked at her with a frown,
"Meri baat suno, Koi dada jaan nay zabardasti nahi ki. Unhon nay tou apni sab poutiyon ko parhnay ki ijazat di thi shuru say. Magar Shahana nay khud agay parhnay say mana kerdiya. Ab Javeria, main aur shabana bhi tou hain, hum bhi tou bagher kişi pabundi k parh rahay hain chahay private hi q na sahi. Koi ehsas e kamtari nahi hoga usay".

Shanzay sighed looking at her for few minutes before she shook her head slightly.

Zainab held her shoulder lightly,
"Acha na, leave it. Let's go and see what ammi and phupho are doing in Dado jaan's room".

With that they both stood up and left the lounge.

🥀 🥀 🥀

Wiping the sweat from her eyebrow with the hem of her pale pink chiffon dupatta, she turned slightly towards her minions who were busy looking at the spice boxes also continuing their never-ending bickering that was inaudible for her ears.
She sighed softly before speaking,
"Hamza, pass me the biryani masala. Hurry up! We don't have much time. Amma and Zeenat bi would be reaching haveli anytime. Jaldi karo, shabash"!

Huzaifa sighed as he turned giving her a bored look,
"Yarr Api! If you're really that much scared from them than why on earth would you still drag us with you in the kitchen and experiment your cooking skills when you know well that the end result would be nothing but chaos".
Huzaifa stated as a matter of fact making Daneen's brows crease as she pressed her lips in a thin line before grabbing the onion from the Steel tray placed at the counter and threw it at him.

Huzaifa easily dodged it with a grin marring his features however, Hamza who stood behind him busy with sniffing the spices in the spice boxes to know which was biryani masala immediately let out a squeal as the onion hit him on his head causing the spice box to slip from his hand and fall down spilling the powder on the white tiled spotless floor.

The mere sight caused shocked gasps to leave Huzaifa and Daneen's lips as they both rushed forward at the same time.

Huzaifa folded his hands on his chest giving Hamza an 'are you serious' look as he spoke,
"You idiot! Why didn't you dodge it"?

Hamza rubbed the side of his head where the onion had hit him as he made a face gazing at Huzaifa angrily,
"How would have I known that an onion was going to pop out of nowhere and hit me? I was busy sniffing.....uhm....I mean finding biryani masala".

His response made Huzaifa roll his eyes,
"Uff aik tou ye nazaqat ki purya hum nay ghar main paal li hai! Did you even hear the exchange Api and I had? You should know it well that whenever we bicker, at the end she always throws something at us. Demagh kidhar hota hai tumhara"?

A scowl marred Hamza's features as he placed both his hands on either sides of his waist turning completely towards his twin,
"You besharam insan! Don't try to become the good smart guy here. If you hadn't stepped aside in the first place, how would have it hit me? How would have I spilled the spice box"?
Hamza wiggled his brows in end as if questioning him.

Huzaifa huffed softly,
"Haan tou Kiya apna sar turwanay k Liye paish kerdeta?
A man has to step aside for his defense".

"Haan tou mera sar itna sasta hai k isay tum turwanay k Liye paish ker do"!
Hamza seethed through gritted teeth.

"Jab hai hi Khali aur Kisi kaam ka hi nahi tou turwanay say konsa tumhain bara nuqsan hojana hai".
Huzaifa mused holding Hamza's glare.

Before Hamza could come up with a comeback, Daneen spoke halting their bickering,
"Stop! Stop you both! First let's solve the issue at hand than you both can fight and bicker as much as you want".
She paused as she gazed down at the powder littering the white tiled floor.

With a cradle in one hand and the salt shaker in the other, her dark waves folded and clipped with a clutcher.
The folded dupatta draped over her one shoulder and the hems tied on the other side at the waist above her white kameez paired with white shalwar and light brown khussas cladding her feet, she sighed softly before turning her gaze back towards her minions who were even dumber than her,
"Listen carefully. We can't change what has happened but we can definitely take care of it before Amma and Zeenat bi arrive. How about this, I'll go and bring the things needed to clean it and you both go and take care of biryani for the time being".
She suggested looking at them expectantly.
Her dark orbs expectant and the dark tendrils that had escaped the loose bun earlier, framing her cheeks on both sides.

Huzaifa was the first to speak as his orbs reflected dumfoundedness,
"Api, yarr how are we supposed to take care of biryani? We don't know how to cook it".

"So do I. But that's the only choice we have. Hurry up and go to the counter. In the pot on left are the rice boiling and on right is the gravy I'm cooking".
Daneen instructed as she handed the cradle to Hamza who took it half-heartedly.

She was about to turn when she stopped,
"And yes, I didn't add biryani masala. Don't forget to add it".
She spoke before disappearing from the door.

Both boys turned and looked at each other.
Utter helplessness surrounded their frames before they finally sighed and grabbed the spice boxes making their way towards the counter where the said dish was being cooked.

Hamza nudged Huzaifa's shoulder to get his attention as he showed him two boxes,
"Which do you think is the biryani masala among the two of these"?

Huzaifa pondered for few seconds before he pointed at one,
"Its colour seems different. I think it's the one".

Hamza turned his neck and gazed at him as he spoke thoughtfully,
"But what if it's the other one"?

Huziafa sighed softly raking a hand through his dark locks as he gazed across the window thoughtfully before turning back towards Hamza's frame who stood there waiting for his response,
"How about....uhm....we add both of them... I mean in little quantities so the taste doesn't become too spicy or overwhelming? Do you think it will work"?

Hamza bit his lower lip in thought,
"Maybe. I think we should try this idea though".

Huzaifa immediately shook his head slightly,
"No, I still think we should wait for Api and let her add the spices. What if we screw up"?

Hamza rolled his eyes,
"We are already screwed and so is everything. So what's the point in pondering over this. Plus, didn't you hear Daneen Api. She said chachi and Zeenat bi would be coming back soon. We literally have no time to waste".

A helpless and defeated sigh left Huzaifa's lips as he nodded his head placing his palm on the counter leaning a bit back as he raised his other hand gesturing it towards the pot,
"Alright, do as you please. I'm counting on you".

Hamza gave him a subtle nod as he busied himself with adding the spices in the gravy.

"I'll bring some water to add. The gravy is getting too thick".
Huzaifa spoke turning towards the slab on left where water bottles were stacked.

Hamza pondered for a while as he scratched the back of his neck in turmoil,
"It won't matter if I add a little red chilli powder too right? I mean we've already added so many spices, what bad would this one do. After all, biryani has a very rich taste. I should definitely add this one too".
Hamza murmured to himself before finally picking up the box and scooping two tablespoons of red chilli powder before adding them in the pot.

He than turned towards salt shaker placed beside the vegetables tray as he contemplated for a second before adding two tablespoons of it again before finally being satisfactied, he began stirring the spatula in the pot.

Huzaifa was back with a cup as he poured the water in the pot.

They turned at the sound of footsteps as they saw Daneen entering with a mop, a bucket, a wipe and few things in her hands.
She turned towards them as she rose her perfect eyebrow quizzically,
"Everything going fine my soldiers"?

Hamza gave her an enthusiastic nod,
"Yes captain! Everything hasbeen taken care of including the spices".

Daneen gave them a thumbs up before turning to clean the mess her very own soldiers created and being their leader, sadly she had to take care of it.

It was after nearly half an hour that Daneen removed the lid and the mouthwatering aroma wafted across their nostrils.

Huzaifa was the first one to sneeze,
"Api yarr, ye itnay masalay wali Khushboo kiyun hai iski"?
He completed before sneezing again.

Daneen gave a light slap on his head as she spoke,
"Biryani is spicy stupid, ofcourse it's aroma would be spicy like it too".

Hamza blinked his teary eyes as he inhaled the wet breath before opening his mouth to speak,
"But why do I feel like it's a little too spicy? The mere aroma is making my eyes tear up".

Daneen waved her hand dismissively in the air as she began dishing out the rice on the huge white platter,
"Dramay nahi karo aur help karo meri. Plates nikalo cabinets say shabash".

And hence they were left with no choice but to listen to her as they began taking out plates from the cabinet.

Half an hour later, Daneen stood infront of her mother's takht as she spoke giving the elderly woman seated, her puppy eyes,
"Amma huzoor, trust me after eating this mouthwatering biryani made from the hands of your precious daughter, you'd definitely forget about the kitchen's condition and give me a praise".

Zeenat apa who stood at a distance couldn't believe her eyes that her always phohar and nalaiq choti bibi had actually successfully made biryani.
It was definitely a huge accomplishment and needed to be praised.

Razia begum gave her a glare before finally picking up the spoon.
She spooned the rice, raising the spoon to her mouth as she took the first morsel.

Both Daneen and Zeenat apa had their gazes fixed on Razia begum.
Daneen gazed at her expectantly while Zeenat apa looked at her with curiosity.

Razia begum chewed for few seconds before she immediately halted.

Daneen saw the way the redness spread across her cheeks than to her nose than to the lids of her eyes,
"Seems like the biryani is so tasty that she couldn't hold in her excitement and happiness".
She internally applauded herself waiting for the praise but what landed on her frame was the brown kohlapuri chappal of her mother who was now growling, yes, literally growling,
"Ye Kiya banaya hai Tum nay!! Ghar k Saray masalay is main daal diye Kiya??? Khanay k kabil hai ye?!! Idhar ao, tumhara tou demagh main durust kerti hn"!!!!

And Daneen couldn't help but run away from there saving her precious life as Huzaifa and Hamza's giggles echoed at the sight below as they stood on the second floor leaning against the railings.

Daneen wanted nothing but to roast them in the moment, just like she roasted the chicken for biryani earlier.

It was clear that she wasn't going to let these two go before she settles her score with them.

🍁🍁🍁

Before the beginning of the Mehndi function the next day, she sat in the lounge sipping tea while surfing channels on the LED screen while all her other cousins and aunts were getting ready in their rooms and rushing across the lounge searching for their jewelry and others trying to find their missing dupattas.

Like the mayon function yesterday, she sat there completely ready for the function.
Wearing a dark green plain full sleeved blouse and a pale golden lehenga that even hid her golden heels behind the flares. The pale golden net dupatta folded and pinned over her one shoulder, the hems falling below that were neatly held in place by a golden string tied around her waist above the dark green blouse. Where the green blouse ended, the pale golden lehenga started. The only jewelry she wore was a head piece in the form of a golden coin shaped teeka. Her hair were styled beautifully, and left untied on her back falling down her waist in the form of straight waterfall.
Her makeup was light, with the touch of mascara and tint of light pink on her lips.

A hand on her shoulder made her turn her head to see her mother Nadia begum standing behind the sofa looking at her fully ready for the function,
"MaSha'Allah. Tayari complete hogayee betay"?
She asked affectionately, caressing her head.

Shanzay nodded with a small mischievous smile invading her lips,
"Yup I'm ready. But let me tell you one thing Mrs Nadia Salman Malik that you're looking drop dead gorgeous. Trust me if baba catches a single glimpse of you like this, he'll waste no time in grabbing a flight and coming back to Pakistan".
Her eyes visibly glinted with mischief.

Nadia begum turned red at her words and immediately slapped Shanzay's shoulder lightly,
"Besharam".

Shanzay laughed heartily looking at her mother blushing yet still glaring at her.
She was dressed up in a very elegant light blue embroidered dress with white stone work. A white shawl draped on her shoulders and hair tied in a neat bun. The light make up on her face adding a touch to her gracefulness.

Shahmeer who had just entered the lounge looking for Zainab caught the mother daughter duo laughing and chatting. Hence, with a warm smile covering his lips, he walked towards them.

He smiled at them as he greeted Nadia begum,
"Salam phupho! Kaisi hain ap"?

Nadia begüm smiled at him patting his shoulder,
"I'm fine beta, Alhumdulillah. You tell me, why haven't you gotten ready yet? Is the lawn still not decorated"?
The task of decoration of lawn was assigned to Shahmeer and Basit. They had to take care of lighting and the seating arrangement for guests in the lawn along with the decor, all in all preparing the vast lawn of haveli for mehndi function.

Eventhough there were only two hours left in the function to start, and the guests were expected to arrive soon, he was still in his casual maroon T-shirt and grey trousers. Not to forget that Nana jaan had also given him the task to receive the guests.

Shahmeer rubbed the back of his neck as he spoke hesitantly,
"Actually I am unable to find Zainab. She took my ironed clothes from Bano and placed them somewhere. Now she is nowhere to be found and I also can't find the clothes. Even Bano has no idea where my kurta pajama is".
His voice was laced with worry and he seemed in a hurry. Ofcourse he would be in a hurry after all he was getting late and it also meant that he won't be able to fulfill the responsibility and disappoint his Dada jaan again.
The elderly man already had many reasons to dislike Shahmeer and hence, Meer didn't want to add another one to the list.

It was as if something clicked in Nadia begum's mind. She hit her palm lightly on her forehead,
"Oh I completely forgot. In the morning Ruqaiyya came and took Sajjida and Zainab with her to accompany Mahi beta to the salon. Sajjida reminded me that your kurta was ironed and placed in ammi's room. Jao beta Shanzay, bhai ka dress le ao nano k kamray say. Jao shabash beta".

Shanzay immediately got up from the sofa ready to leave when Shahmeer spoke up,
"It's alright munchkin. I'll go fetch it myself. Don't trouble yourself".

Shanzay smiled shaking her head,
"Not a problem. Just wait for a minute, I'll be back".

She rushed downstairs to nano jaan's room that had the perfect blend of antique and tradition to it .
The room was adorned with oakwood furniture and beautiful carpets along with antique decoration pieces.

It was empty since nano jaan was with Sajjida Mami in kitchen supervising everything while Nana jaan had gone out of haveli with her uncles and were expected to return in an hour.

After searching for a bit, she found the plain white kurta and pajama neatly placed on the oakwood cushioned sofa in the sitting area of the hujra.

She immediately picked the hanger and left the room rushing upstairs while gripping her lehenga from one end. Just as she entered the lounge, Shahana and Shabana had also exited their rooms fully ready for the function. Nadia begum had long left to assist Sajjida Mami with some work.

Shabana walked towards Romaisa Mami who had called her for some help leaving Shahana alone whose attention had been diverted towards the smiling faces of Shanzay and Shahmeer.
Seeing them like this, the contours of her face tightened as the thin brows of her furrowed ever so slightly.

Shahmeer smiled and looked at Shanzay gratefully as he took the hanger,
"Thanks munchkin. You really proved my savior this time".

Shanzay chuckled in return,
"Maskay na lagao mujhay. Jao ja kar tayar hojao nahi tou nana jaan ki dant Sun nay ko milay gi".
Her tone visibly edged with teasing.

Shahmeer's brow arched higher at her words and he couldn't help the chuckle that escaped his lips as he immediately ruffled her hair caressing the top of her head,
"You little devil, are you being sarcastic"?

Shanzay let out a gasp as she pushed Shahmeer's hands away giving him a glare,
"Don't do this Meer. I literally spent half an hour on getting my hair fixed. Don't you dare".

Shahmeer laughed out louder at seeing her rosy cheeks puffed up in anger and orbs drilling holes in his head trying to intimidate him.

He couldn't help but raise his hand and slightly flick her forehead with his finger and thumb,
"Are you trying to intimidate me you little bunny? If you're trying to, trust me you're failing at it and that too so badly".

Shanzay narrowed her eyes at him,
"Shahmeer Chaudhary, are you asking for a beating"?

The black orbs of his peeking from between the wet strands scattered over his forehead indicating that he had taken shower moments ago immediately glinted in amusement as a soft throaty chuckle left his lips again.

He tried to stifle his smile immediately shaking his head,
"Nah, I can't afford to get hurt. Who'll receive dada jaan's guests than"?

Shanzay tried to stifle the smile from invading her lips as she gave him a fake glare ,
"So you're agreeing that I'm stronger than you"?

Shahmeer gave her a nod with a soft smile touching the corners of his lips,
"Ofcourse you are. Is there even a doubt in this"?

The other second Shanzay couldn't help but drop the act as her giggles echoed across the lounge causing Meer to accompany her and laugh softly.

After the laughter had died down, Shahmeer raised the kurta infront of her eyes as he spoke with gratitude,
"Thanks again munchkin. Jokes aside, if I couldn't find my dress, I literally would have gotten a nice scolding from Dada jaan".

Shanzay shook her head,
"Mention not. Now go and and get ready, you don't have much time before the function starts".

Shahmeer nodded as he placed the kurta over his arm.
He glanced at her with warmth and gave her a thumbs up,
"Also, I must add that my sister is literally slaying this outfit.
Be careful and don't trip over the lehenga, okay"?

Shanzay raised her head towards the ceiling letting out a deep sigh before turning her gaze back to him,
"I'll ignore the last line you said and say thank you for the first few words you spoke".

Shahmeer's lips twitched at the corners barely stifling the smile,
"I just showed concern for you".

Shanzay waved her hand in air gesturing him to go,
"I'm also showing concern for you and saving you from Nana jaan's wrath. Go and get ready".

Shahmeer gave her a firm nod,
"Roger boss".
Before he turned and took the staircase swiftly walking downstairs.

Shanzay smiled shaking her head as she turned her head only to come across the penetrating and scalding gaze of Shahana who stood at the distance.

There was something about the way she was glaring at Shanzay that made chills run down Shanzay's spine making her unable to understand what had happened.

The other second Shahana averted her gaze from her and immediately walked out of the lounge leaving a stunned Shanzay behind.

Did she do anything wrong?
