TIMEOUT - Part Five

Kyun doesn't get it. No matter what he's doing, no matter how charming he tries to be, how nice he is, you both always end up roasting each other during the extra tuition. And he has no idea why you both make each other blow up all the time...

But somehow he's kinda glad. Cause you fight playfully again. You even apologized for your outburst. Since you didn't name any reasons for it, he's quite unsatisfied with it but it's better than nothing. And he can't deny that he needs you for his grades...

A few weeks later, on a Wednesday, Kyun sits by the sports field, tense, and watches his team's practice. There's nothing he can do against this urge to overthink. He used to be the star of this team. It's painful to see that they... just go on. It almost seems like they don't need him.

Emery, his substitute, is a miserable Wide Receiver. But he's not sure if everyone can see it or if it's just him hating that guy for getting the chance to prove his talent to the scouts. And not Kyun. Biting his lip, he tries to focus, tries to hear what the coach is telling them but Hayden and her Cheerleader team, who are practicing as well in the endzone, are too goddamn loud.

"Kyun!" he suddenly hears behind him and turns around, confused.

"Y/n?" he asks and gasps. "Oh my gosh, what time is it?"

"Almost four! I've been waiting for you for 45 minutes... what's wrong?"

Shit. He completely lost track of time. It felt like ten minutes he's been sitting here, not two hours.

"I'm so sorry" he immediately says and tries to get on his feet. "I kinda... I—"

"It's okay..." you say to his surprise and eye him worriedly. "Everything alright?"

Sighing, he nods but still manages to stand up. "Yeah... I just wanted to see the practice... didn't want to miss more than I already do..."

Again you nod, understanding before you stand there a little irresolutely.

"It's okay if... you can't make it from time to time just... text me then alright?"

Kyun looks down at you. It seems like you're having a soft day.

Shit.

He could've used that soft day of yours to get to know you better. But he missed that chance.

Sighing his eyes wander to the field and he remembers what kept his head busy the past hours. Emery just let an easy ball slip through... what an idiot.

"Y/n!" Hayden walks at a fast pace up to the both of you. "What are you doing here? Is everything okay?"

Kyun smirks. So it wasn't just a feeling of his, but seeing you at the sports field really is kind of strange.

"Yes!" you nod. "Kyun just didn't show up and —"

"And you let her look for you? Here?" Hayden interrupts you and looks at Kyun, suddenly pissed as fuck. What's going on?

"She's giving you these extra lessons, it's not her duty to look for you! Since when does the stick run after the dog I—"

"Hayden!" you interrupt her ranting while Kyun looks at her, baffled.

WHAT THE FUCK?

"It's okay!" you groan and the blonde looks at you with narrowed brows. "Okay... holler if you need me, okay? I'm right over there!"

Smiling, you nod and Kyun watches her disappear, completely confused.

"What the hell was that all about?"

Why does Hayden treat you like you might break?

"Nothing!" you sigh and shake your head. "Do you wanna talk about this entire situation here?"

He tilts his head whilst looking at you. "Situation?"

"Yeah..." you nod and walk a little closer to the side of the field. "You never missed a single extra lesson since we started. And then I find you sitting here, all gloomy ... so?"

For a long moment, he stares at you. There's a lot he wants to know from you as well but you refuse to tell him. But maybe this is what you need. Maybe he has to show what's bothering him so... you can trust him. Somehow...

"What do you want me to tell you?" he sighs, steps next to you by the field, and looks over to his teammates. "My entire life I've been raised to do this... all I wanted was to play ball. And not because my dad dragged me to it or because I was a dreamer but because this is what I really really want! And now?" he stops and glances at you for a second. "For so long I was the best... and when it really matters... when the talent scouts come... I won't be there... that's frustrating..."

"But..." you ask and he can hear in your voice that you try to be careful with your questions. "Your leg will heal. And you still can be a good player in college...?"

Scoffing, he looks back at you. "As if this is a guarantee. Not when I get into a state university whose team isn't even good enough for the College-Football-League..."

Not to mention what happens if the doctors remove the cast and tell him he's never able to play again. He's scared of that. It's unlikely. But when he thinks about his luck lately...

For a moment you both fall silent until he feels you nudging your shoulder softly against his. And again he notices that you're wearing pretty much considering the warm day.

"Then we have to work harder!" you smile and he immediately forgets his last thought and groans.

"How much harder, y/n?" he rants. "I know your solution is always studying but this is different! This isn't about learning from books or... interpreting poems... this is more. And this is everything I've ever wanted!"

He knows he sounds melodramatic here but... gosh this is frustrating.

"I'm sorry..." you say sheepishly. "I wish I had something to tell you that—"

Abruptly, you stop and gasp as a ball comes flying toward you. But before it can hit you, Kyun drops his crutch and catches the egg with one hand and almost zero effort.

Immediately his teammates on the field cheer loudly. Gosh, he missed this feeling...

"SORRY BRO, SORRY Y/N!" Wonho yells over to you.

"It's okay!" he calls back and looks down at you, so scared that this might make you freak out again. But instead, he finds you eying him in complete shock.

"What?" he asks, confused.

"The ball..." you stammer. "You just... I mean... with one hand. So easily...?"

Laughing he throws his head back. "I'm a Wide Receiver. That's my job, y/n!"

It's a little shame that you never saw him in beastmode. This wasn't even close to what he's capable of.

"Catching balls from a long distance?" you ask and he smirks. Someone's showing interest in football...

"Yes!"

"Oh..." you nod and stare into the emptiness. He doesn't know much about you but the way you bite your lip to hide that smile on your face, speaks volumes. You're impressed as fuck.

"Yeah but I must admit this was pretty impressive!" he laughs. "I'm a little proud as well!"

Surprised you look at him before you both laugh out loud.

"But maybe you get now that I was born for this..." he says when you simmer down. He drops his other crutch as well. He's sure it won't be bad to put weight in his injured leg for a few seconds. He takes the ball in both of his hands and as he's about to throw it back to Wonho and the others - who already found another ball to play with by now - he looks at you again. "Wanna try it?"

"What? Throwing a ball? No!" you shake your head firmly. "I'm absolutely not good at sports!"

"Try it!" he chuckles and waves you over. "Come here!"

A little hesitantly you walk next to him. Kyun pulls you by your hoodie in front of him and wraps his arms around you, placing the ball in your hands.

"Hold it like this!" he says and can't help but have this strange feeling as your hands get in touch while he looks over your shoulder. Gently, he guides your fingers into the spaces between the stitches along the seam and chuckles.

"Your hands are so tiny! Okay. With your fingers here you get a tight grip on the ball. Use the grip on the seam to get some leverage, so it spins. And don't just throw it upfront, make the ball roll through your fingers. Like this..." he shows you the movement of your hand and for a split second you look up and your eyes meet. Instantly Kyun gulps heavily. The dim light of the study room never showed the bright color of your eyes. They're... beautiful.

Shit...

Quickly, he shakes his thoughts off, before he pushes you gently so you stand a little crosswise, his hands still on yours on the ball.

"It's all from the triceps. You have to have strength in here!" he says and touches your arm, still standing behind you. Suddenly you flinch.

"Sorry!" he says quickly and takes his hands off of you. "Sorry I—"

"Not your fault!" you say over your shoulder and chuckle embarrassed while he watches you, tense. "I was just not expecting that..."

For a long moment, he stares at your shoulder. He doesn't like this. At all. Not that you flinched... but people don't do that without a reason. Before he gets lost in his thoughts again, he smiles at you, doesn't wanna give you the feeling you're weird or something. Carefully, he lifts his hands again.

"Your waist is okay?" he asks casually, cause he remembers he already touched you there earlier. He tries everything to not make a big deal out of this, he's sure you already feel bad enough for this.

A little smile appears on your face and you nod.

"Everywhere is okay. I was just... not expecting it as I said!"

"Yeah, but better safe than sorry!" he grins and lays his hands on your waist again. He tries his best to not touch your actual body but shows you what he means by pulling your pullover.

"While throwing, you turn your body upfront like this..." he says and moves your upper body by your waist. "So you have enough momentum! Try it now!" he limps a step back and watches you adjusting your hand on the ball.

"You probably won't make the first time but— HOLY FUCK!"

Wide-eyed, he pressed his hand to his mouth as you throw the ball so hard and smooth that it literally glides through the air - and hits Wonho! Thank god he's wearing a helmet.

In complete shock, you look at each other. You seem to have a hard time believing what you just did before you look back at the field.

"SORRY WONHO!" you yell over at him. The Tight End turns around to you, confused.

"THAT WAS YOU?" he asks bewildered.

"YES!" you and Kyun say in synch and laugh out loud.

"Girl! Wow!" Kyun gasps, still so beaten by that.

"Was that good?" you ask giggling and he shakes his head in utter disbelief.

"If that was good?" he asks, pulls you closer, and points to the sports field.

"Look there! Look at Shownu!" he explains and nods to his broad friend who's just about to throw the ball. In silence you watch him making the exact same moves Kyun just showed you and passes the ball to Emery who - once again - lets it slip...

"See?" he asks and looks at you. "You just threw the ball as good as a damn Quarterback!"

That huge smile on your face proves how proud you are and you definitely can be. That was amazing.

"I was lucky I guess..." you giggle and he tilts his head once again.

"Lucky... or talented?"

"Beginner's luck!" you confirm. "Pretty sure!"
