The Girl In Apartment 4-D

On the news,

The is blasted,

And they talk about the girl,

Found in a bathtub,

In Apartment 4-D,

The horror that was,

The murder,

Is something that,

Is hardly right for words,

But I can tell you exactly what happened,

Because I am that girl,

I now watch life that could have been,

From the Mirrors,

Located within the apartment building,

That became my final resting place,

Let’s start at the beginning,

My name is Jackie,

And I was just 15 when life,

Was taken away from me,

It started when I was in the yard,

Watching the cars go by,

I never heard the footsteps,

Crossing the grass,

The hand wrapped around my mouth,

The arm around my waist,

I tried to scream,

But nothing came out,

A black bag went over my head,

And I was tossed into a vehicle,

My arms were tied,

And cold pressed against the metal,

At the bottom,

I listened closely,

I didn’t understand

What was going on,

I overheard a man,

With a deep gruff voice,

Talking,

“We need to let them know that we have her.”

“And what if they don’t pay?”

“Then we kill her,

That simple.”

The gruff man responded,

I shuddered,

I didn’t know what it was they wanted,

But I knew that I didn’t want to die,

The vehicle began to bump,

And rock,

The hood on my head moved slowly,

But never enough to let me see,

The bumps continued,

Before finally coming to a stop,

I felt relief,

But I knew this was just false hope,

I wanted to hope,

That everything would be okay,

As we stopped the gruff voiced man spoke again,

“We’re going to get what we’re owed for her.”

What was it that they were owed,

And my mind made the connection,

They were going to ransom me for whatever it was,

That they wanted,

But my family didn’t owe them anything,

Not that I knew of,

Then it hit me,

Maybe my dad is holding secrets,

Secrets hidden with the walls that I had no idea,

Existed,

I was pulled up,

Where I sat waiting,

As the hood was pulled off my head,

As my eyes adjusted,

Didn’t know where I was,

But it slowly became clear,

That we were sitting inside a warehouse,

I sat wondering,

What was coming next,

As the men set up a camera,

On a tripod,

The red light flashing,

And the man begins talking,

‘I hope your seeing this,

Because if not your precious little angel,

Will be dead very soon,

Bring us what you owe,

And she lives,

It’s that simple Evan.”

I shuttered when they said,

My dad’s name,

Just thinking that he could know people like this,

Made me sick inside,

And it made me think,

What is it that he owed them,

The gruff man,

Picked the camera off the tripod,

And walked toward me,

Flashing the camera in my face,

“You see your little girl,”

He grabbed me by the hair,

“I’m not fucking around anymore,

Meet us in the abandoned industrial park,

Within 24 hours or she dies.”

He shut off the camera,

As another shut a laptop,

And the hood was put back on,

And into the vehicle I went again,

Where they slammed the doors,

Hours had to pass,

Before they started it again,

And we were moving,

I sat silently,

Only assuming that we were going to meet my dad,

Time passed slowly,

Before we came to a stop,

The doors opened again,

I was pulled to my feet,

Then the gruff man spoke,

“Evan where is it?”

Silence

“I was fucking talking to you Evan.”

“I don’t have it Jordan,”

My thoughts went out the window,

My dad really knew this man,

And by name none the less,

There was a push in my back,

And I hit the gravel brining me back to reality,

“Your precious baby girl,

Isn’t enough to talk you into paying,”

“I don’t have it,”

My dad said almost pleading,

“Give me another 12 hours.”

Jordan laughed,

“500 Thousand dollars in 12 hours.”

“Yes.”

My dad responded.

They picked me up again,

And threw me into the vehicle,

There was silence before it started again,

And we were moving again,

I was dragged up stairs,

After we stopped again,

And into a room,

And tossed to a tiled floor,

I wiggled my body enough,

To learn my surroundings were that of a bathroom,

My hands were still behind me,

I strained my ears,

And heard a new man talking,

“How did you find this?”

“Luck.” Jordan replied,

“So what now?”

There was a pause,

“We wait.” He said.

“If they don’t come through,”

There was another pause,

“Kill her,

And call it even.”

I began to sob,

And cried myself to sleep,

When I woke up,

The hood was gone,

And Jordan was in the hallway,

“Good of you to join us Evan.”

I turned my head and saw my dad,

Who caught my eye,

He had a bag in one hand,

“I’m glad you came through,

Would you like to see your daughter?”

He ran by without a second thought dropping the bag,

They picked it up and opened it and found what they were looking for,

“Well Evan, I’d say we’re even,

You’ll learn next time you make deals with people like us.”

He nodded,

In a flash Jordan had a gun out pointed at me and pulled the trigger,

The world went black for what felt like ages,

Finally I came too and appeared to be laying on the bed,

Of the apartment,

Hello,

I called,

With no response,

I walked around the apartment,

My body was in the bathtub,

A single gunshot in the head,

Everyone else was gone,

Even my dad,

I began to sob again,

And the world went black one more time,

When I came to again I realized the police had been in,

And moved my body,

As I watched I felt something touch me,

And I turned to see my dad,

“What happened?”

“Men like Jordan never keep their words,

I managed to find my way back to you,

And now we’ll be together in eternity,”

My dad than gave me a hug,

I felt anger,

Sorrow,

And resentment,

Knowing that we would forever be stuck,

To live a life within the mirrors,

And hallways of this apartment building,

I’m happy I’m not alone,

Though I think there’s something my dad isn’t telling me,

The small glimmer that used to be in his eyes is gone,

And there seems to be an evil,

That resides there,

Maybe I’ll find out one day,

Then again,

Maybe I won’t,

Until than I will forever be the Girl,

With her dad,

In Apartment 4-D,

Author’s Notes:

“The Girl in Apartment 4-D” came to me like a lot of ideas do nowdays, out of nowhere. This one started with the first four lines seeming to repeat themselves in my head and I couldn’t shake them. When I sat down to write it I didn’t quite know where I was going to go with it but after a few tweaks I ended up at the product that you just read. I know the ending may spark a few questions and I’ll say that I want you to draw your own conclusions from the ending. I have my thoughts on why the evil is in his eyes but you may have your own. I left it opened for that reason. If you’d like to share your thoughts and what you think the ending means comment or send me an email to robinsonwritings@hotmail.com I’d love to hear from you.
