It's Monday morning and I do not feel great at all. I'm really nauseous and I'm having really bad abdominal cramps and lower back pain. At first I thought it's my period but I realised the timing isn't right and I don't have nausea or back pain on my period.
I finally mustered up the energy to get up from bed. Bernardo already left because he had a meeting to get to and had to leave early. The time is 07:58 right now. I'd usually get up later but I think I need to go to the hospital.
I managed to take a shower and get dressed in sweatpants, a sweatshirt and sneakers.
By now my symptoms have intensified. I was walking out of he closet, with intensions of going downstairs to get one of the guards to take me to the hospital.
I grabbed my phone from on top of the bed and started slowly walking towards the door, hunched over in pain.
I felt something wet running down my legs, I stopped walking and looked down. I was shocked. I was bleeding. It was a lot of blood because I bled through my sweatpants. I could feel that something was terribly wrong.
I decided to speed dial Bernardo because it seems getting downstairs would be a mission and I was losing energy.
On the second ring he picked up the phones.
"Bernardo...."
He must have heard the panic in my voice because his tone was dripping with worry.
"Skye, are you okay. What's going on"
I started feeling dizzy and my vision got blurry. I tried blinking to clear it up.
"I'm don't feel good. I'm bleeding and I need the hospital. I'm dizzy". I said in a faint voice.
"Shit. Gio, call Anthony and tell him to take Skye to the hospital right now. Tell him she should be in our room. Hurry up!"
I heard his shout to Gio. I then heard what sounded like running on the other end of the line.
"Skye, stay on the line okay. I'm on my way, Anthony is coming to you right now"
"Berna...." Just as I was about to say something I lost control of my body. I felt myself drop the phone and fall to the ground. Before I lost consciousness, I heard Bernardo call for me on the phone and the bedroom door opening. Everything went black.
BERNARDO'S POV
I'm panicking right now because Skye isn't responding to me and I heard a thud on her side of the line.
"Boss, she passed out. Ricky is carrying her and we're taking her to the hospital."
I heard Anthony say to me on her phone. I guess he heard me shout out to her when she dropped her phone.
Gio and I Ieft the meeting. We had taken 2 Range Rovers on our way here. One with the both of us and 2 other men. And the other one had 4 men.
Everyone rushed into the cars and we sped to the hospital.
Gio told Anthony to take Skye to St. Mary's Hospital, which is the closest to our house.
I am a bundle of nerves right now but I can't let it show in front of my men. A million and one things were running through my mind. I wondered what's going on and if my wife is going to be okay.
As all these thoughts were running through my head, I was twirling my black titanium wedding ring.
The way to the hospital felt like it took a million years but when we finally arrived, I jumped out of the car with Gio and 2 of my men following me.
I ran up to the nurses station.
"My wife Skye Moretti was just brought in. I need to know what's going on and I need to see her right now.". I said in a cold and stern voice.
I could see the nurse was afraid.
"Unfortunately s-sir, I don't ha-have any information ri-right n-now but the doctor will update you when she's been checked out s-sir"
She stuttered. Right then my anger spiked. I slammed my fist on the table and the nursed jumped in fear. Before I could say anything or rather threaten her into getting me an update, Gio put his hand on my shoulder.
"Let's sit and wait man. When they have an update, they'll let us know."
We went to sit in the waiting room and I spotted Anthony and Ricky. They stood up and came towards us.
"Boss, we found her passed on the floor of your bedroom and her sweatpants had blood. We rushed her here and they immediately took her on a gurney and attended to her."
Anthony said to me. The way he described the blood situation made me realise he was trying to tell he she was bleeding from her vagina but obviously didn't want to put it that way in respect for her.
Anthony handed me her phone from his suit jacket.
"Thank you Anthony and Ricky. Everyone get stationed outside. Gio, Anthony and Ricky will stay with me".
They did as I said wordlessly. I sat down on the chair and tried to reel in my nerves. There were not many people in the waiting room.
A few minutes turned into an hour. An hour turned into 2. And then finally the doctor came.
"Mr Moretti?"
I looked up and saw a female doctor who looked to be in her mid-fifties wearing scrubs. I jumped up and walked towards her with Gio on my tail.
"That's me. How's my wife?"
He hesitantly towards Gio.
"You can talk with him around. It's fine."
"Alright. I'm Dr Smith. Let's step aside gentlemen"
She led us to a relatively quiet hallway that I assume lead to hospital rooms.
"Mrs Moretti is fine. We managed to stabilise her. Were you aware she was pregnant?"
My mind stopped working and my heart started racing when she said that. What does she mean 'was'.
I look at her baffled.
"Pregnant? No, I wasn't aware and what do you mean was?"
"I'm sorry Mr Moretti but she had a miscarriage. She was about 5 weeks along and we had to perform a procedure to remove the miscarried fetus and placenta from Mrs Moretti's uterus. We managed to stabilise her and she's in a room right now"
Right then, my world stopped. I couldn't function in that moment. A miscarriage? I don't think Skye herself even knew she was pregnant.
No wonder she's been feeling off and sick lately. The pregnancy symptoms were starting to present themselves.
Right then my autopilot kicked in.
"Can I see her?"
"Of course. Right this way."
We followed her to the room and she opened the door. Just as I was about to enter, Gio stopped me.
"Uhm, you go in man. I'll give you some space. I'll go get Anthony and Ricky from the waiting room and we'll sit here outside the room."
I just nodded my head and proceeded to enter the room.
She was laying on the bed. Asleep. With an IV hooked to her arm and heart monitor that beeped.
"She should come to not too long from now. I'll leave you be and press this button when she wakes up"
She said and she showed me the button to press above the bed.
I sat on the chair beside her bed. And took her hand between my hands. Right then I let my emotions out. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried. I cried for our miscarried baby. I cried for Skye and I cried for the fact that I wasn't there when I should've been. I should've been with her this morning but I wasn't. I should've insisted more that she see a doctor.
"I'm so sorry baby"
I said to her in a whisper even though she couldn't hear me.
