The lights of the operation theatre turned of. It was about late afternoon. Officer Som stood at his seat. The doctors came out with no expression. They approached the officers.
"These are her jewelry and clothes. The attack was a major one. We have removed two bullets from her body. Still, she's unconscious. We have to wait till today night for her to return to consciousness. If still she doesn't wakes up, we need to perform more tests. She's shifted in the special room upstairs. These medicines are required. Do bring them upto her room." The doctors were narrating her condition to the officer.
He simply nodded. He didn't knew what he was supposed to react for the condition of an unknown person. All he thought of doing was to bring her the medicines. He went to the medical store where he met Girish and Officer Jeet.
"Hey buddy. Is the operation over?" Jeet asked as he went towards Officer Som.
"Yup. Just now. I'm about to grab some meds for the lady." He replied.
"How's she? Has she returned to her consciousness? Is she hurt to badly? Was the operation was successful?" Girish popped up questions one after the other as he stood besides Officer Jeet.
"The operation was success. She's still unconscious but doctors say she'll be okay till evening. If not, they will need to perform some tests. And yes, she's hurt. Along with wounds caused due to firing, she even has some bruises on her body due to falling. Nothing more." Officer Som gave details to Girish as Girish panicked on each statement.
"I hope she will be fine soon." Girish replied.
"You guys go upstairs. I'll take the medicines and will join you." Officer Som replied as the men parted their ways.
Girish rushed to her room after enquiring at the reception. He stood outside the room when a nurse stopped him.
"Excuse me sir. You can't go inside right now. We are changing the dressing of the patient. You need to wait." She politely asked him to stay out as Girish sighed.
"Alright..." Girish replied.
"Has her husband sent the medicines with you?" The nurse asked them as Girish looked at her with a big question mark on his face.
"Her husband?" They both asked in unison as they didn't knew anyone else was there along with officer.
"But she never told me about him..." Girish spoke in disappointment.
"Why would she, are you her family member?" Jeet spoke in sarcastic tone as Girish looked at him with anger in his eyes.
"Look mister. She's my good friend..." Girish gave angry glares to Jeet as he spoke.
"Leave him sister. Are you sure you handed the things to the right person?" Jeet spoke as he interrupted Girish.
"Yes. I've handed him her belongings and prescription for required medicines. I told him specifically that the medicines need to be brought as soon as possible." The nurse spoke as they heard a man panting behind them.
"Sorry for the late sister. Here are the required meds you asked for." Officer Som handed the medicines to the nurse.
"You can't afford to be late sir. Keep them on the table there and wait besides her. She has started to regain her consciousness. I'll explain you the dosages and her diet." The nurse said as she moved outside the room.
"Umm... Sir... I can wait if you won't mind..." Girish spoke as he wanted to meet Rohini.
"Umm... Sure. Have these. We will wait outside." Girish went in as he took the medicines from the officer.
Both the men sat outside at the waiting room. Jeet had brought coffee along with him from the cafeteria.
"Take this. You must be tired." Jeet gave coffee to the officer.
"Thanks. It was needed. Any updates about the case?" He replied.
"Yes. A positive news. The case is closed. The man who was arrested by the lady accepted all the accusations and told the police about their secret place where the rest of the people were hiding. We don't have to do anything. The kind lady has taken care of everything yesterday itself. She is my inspiration from today." Jeet spoke as both of them enjoyed their coffee.
"She is way to dedicated to her work for her young age. She's just 24... Can you believe it?" Jeet spoke.
They were having some short talk when they heard voice of glass shattering. Both of them rushed towards the sound.
"How come you're still alive? Even after firing the gun right on your chest, you still managed to breathe? How?" They heard a husky voice from Rohini's room.
"I... I... Ummm..." Rohini struggled to form words as she still had the oxygen mask on. Knowing that she couldn't shout, she broke another glass which was on the table.
"Shh... Don't utter a single word. Now I'm gonna kill you for the last time. Then I'll be promoted as the head and the case if terrorists will be closed forever as you're no more. Just one single shot and you're...." The man was about to complete his sentence but was stopped by Officer Jeet.
"Drop your weapon. Step behind." He shouted as Girish dropped his gun.
"Officer Girish, you?" Jeet exclaimed as he unmasked the man.
"Yes. This is Girish." He said as he tried to free himself for the hold.
"No moving. I've pointed gun on your head. Stay still. Yaara, call the police." Jeet addressed Officer Som as he pulled Girish out of the room.
"Calm down doctors are on their way. I'll be right back." Jeet spoke to Rohini as she tried to respond.
Girish was taken to the police station after the police arrived. The doctors went to Rohini's room so as to ensure she wasn't hurt. She had a small cut on her throat as Girish tried to kill her with broken glass and bruises on her body. It clearly showed she tried to protest Girish. Also, the glass of table she shattered with her hand was struck to her face. Officer Jeet stayed at the police station as he issued a complaint against Girish and was the witness of the scene.
Officer Som stood outside Rohini's room. He forbade to leave the place as he was now given the responsibility of the Officer's security. He sat outside the room when a nurse approached him.
"Sir, the patient calls for you." The nurse said as she left.
He went inside. She was now, covered in more bandages. Her face was partially covered with bandage. He sat besides her bed.
"You called for me, Officer Sitara?" He addressed her as he sat there.
She simply nodded. Her eyes were closed. She recognised the voice. She opened her eyes to have a look at the man.
"You..." She tried to get up after she saw him.
"What happened Officer? Do you need something? Shall I call the nurse?" He spoke as she looked at him.
She nodded, telling him no. He tried to understand what she meant to say.
"I... Do you... You remem.. remember me?" She tried to form a sentence but her voice wasn't heard clearly as she had her oxygen mask on.
"I'm not getting what you are trying to say..." He replied with complete innocence in his tone.
"Sh... Shashi is that... Is that you?" She tried to speak more clearly.
"How come you know my name?" He replied with a questioned face.
She tried to speak but was unable to do so. She tried to point towards the file on the table. Her hands were trembling but she managed to point the file for him.
"You want me to give that to you?" He tried to guess her intention behind pointing out the file.
She nodded, signalling a yes. He got up and moved towards the table. He picked up the file and sat besides her.
He gave her the file. She pointed out something to him on the file. He pulled his chair besides her as he tried to read what she was pointing.
She was pointing to her name on the file.
"You want me to read your name?" He looked at her to which she nodded.
He took the file. He read her name and was shocked. He looked at her and back on the file. The room was filled with silence. Both of them were staring at each other.
"Are you... Rohini?" Shashi spoke to which Rohini replied yes with a nod.
