I lean against the countertop in front of him
"You're starring at me. Why?"
He looks me in the eyes and shakes his head
"I just have this feeling I know you or maybe a relative of yours?"
He has a small smirk on his face but also mixed with a look that's trying to figure me out
I'll just tell him
"My name is Diane"
I then grab a rag to wipe down the countertop
His eyes widen. Poor buck is beyond confused
He looks down at his beer then me then his beer then back at me
"I didn't drug you if that's what your thinking"
"Then how?" he pauses then goes on to say "are you messing with me? There was a girl I knew.." his words trail off so I then look him in the eyes and squint
"James Bucky Barnes it's me Diane."
His eyes narrow. Our eyes stay connected until his smirk comes back.
"It's.. you? I don't get it. How are you here"
I break our eye contact to get myself a beer and take a sip
"I couldn't bare being with out you and Steve- even though that sounds pathetic.. I worked for a couple of years with scientists and Peggy and anyone I could find to figure out how you guys could still be alive because I truly felt like you two weren't dead- everyone thought I was crazy. But that's besides the point.. Um well once the news came out that Steve was somewhere in the frozen lake. I just thought that was my only idea. So I did it and here I am"
Bucky shakes his head in disbelief
"It's actually you.. You're crazy Diane."
There's a couple seconds of calming silence but then I say
"You look good though Buck. You don't look the same but yet you do-You look grown up"
"You do too. Not having your hair in ponytails and those crazy curls and updos you would do is weird to see but the new hair- it suits you. And you look grown up too, because we did grow up dee-dee"
Hearing him say dee dee after so long makes me smile
He sits up straight and clears his throat
"Just to be safe. If you are really my Diane. Tell me a really specific story about you- or us"
I think for a second
"Remember that time we all agreed- you me and Steve- to have a triple date but my guy had completely and utterly broken my heart before we all hung out and I came to you guys in tears and you and Steve canceled with your dates and we got ice cream and milkshakes"
Bucky had been trying not to smile
"Say another"
"Don't believe me?"
"Just want to hear more stories"
He says seriously
I think and gasp
"That weird time when you thought steve and I were together behind your back"
Buckys eyes widen at this story so I go on to tell it
"We had been at my new house that I had just moved to. I think I was 16 no 17- I'm not sure. But Steve and I were in my new room. He just got a haircut and I joked that it looked awful and we had laughed so hard about the haircut he fell sorta on top of me then you had-"
I start to laugh thinking about it
"I remember that one just don't even go on"
Bucky says. His smile is uncontainable.
He moves my hand out and holds it then looks to me saying
"We should go to my apartment"
