LeiAnn finally caved. The day after Christmas she drove to the hospital to see he little girl out of her coma.

Once LeiAnn got to the little girl's room, an overwhelming rush of regret whooshed through her. A nurse walked out just as LeiAnn walked in.

"She just woke up." The nurse said, smiling as she recognized LeiAnn.

"Okay, thanks." LeiAnn breathed. She turned and walked in.

Across the room the little girl gazed at LeiAnn.

LeiAnn smiled. "Hi sweetie!" She chocked, as she walked toward the bed.

The girl smiled. "Ahh!" She giggled, reaching out for her hero.

Purple. The girl's eyes were purple.

LeiAnn breathed as she brushed a honey curl out of the sweetie's face. This happy, energetic little child seemed way different from the girl LeiAnn had found.

LeiAnn finally changed her mind. She had to take this baby into her home. She had to care for her and keep her safe. She was going to love that baby as her own.

She called Holden.

"Hey!" Holden said. "How are you doing?" He said, his voice filled with pounds of concern.

"I'm at the hospital with the girl. Is it too late to change my mind?" LeiAnn, filled with hope. That baby suddenly changed her life... LeiAnn just didn't know whether that change would be a good thing.

Holden could hear the helplessness in LeiAnn's voice. She really loved the girl. "No, it's not."

She sighed a long sigh on relief. She pushed that last though way back inside her head. "Good... So no one else has arranged for this baby to be taken care of?"

"No. I'll go tell the foster home. A little paper work then someone can go and tour your house." Holden replied.

"So how long until I can take her home?"

She could feel Holden smile through the phone. "Two weeks tops."

LeiAnn sighed. "Until then...?"

"She will stay at the hospital for a week and foster home for the rest of the time, depending on how long the paperwork takes."

Okay. LeiAnn could handle that. The little girl was going to be her's. Or at least for a little. "Okay. Thanks, Holden."

He chuckled. "Anytime."

They exchanged good byes and hung up.

The hospital room was silent. The girl must had dozed off while LeiAnn was talking to Holden. She ran her fingers through her unbrushed, honey curls. This child sure can heal fast. LeiAnn reached for her little hand and turned it so the palms were up. Right on her wrist was a black mark. It was like a tattoo. It was a heart, with wings and a halo. In side the halo was the number 14. In the middle of the heart was a.. code?

BORA310ka4

LeiAnn just stared. The numbers were tiny, but they were still pretty legible. The entire tattoo measured about one inch across including the wings.

LeiAnn suddenly felt uneasy; watched. Her stomach quivered as she turned the girl's hand over and walked out of the room.

"Maa!" The girl cried.

LeiAnn stopped dead in her tracks. Goose bumps rose as she turned and walked into her room.

She swallowed.

"Sweetie!" LeiAnn croaked. Suddenly she felt afraid of the child. That wasn't good.

"Ma!" The sweet, innocent looking little girl giggled.

It's fine, LeiAnn reassured herself. This child is safe. It's just whoever put that tattoo on her might not be. At least she thinks.

LeiAnn knew she had to tell someone. Or maybe she could research it a little first.

LeiAnn took her iPhone out of her purse and tapped the Safari app. Then the Google search bar. She typed in the code: BORA310ka4.

No results. She typed in ka4 thinking that might have a chance.

Something about an Atlantic bird popped up. LeiAnn didn't know what that had to do with ka4, but it got her a start. As for the 14 And 310.. She could figure that out later. LeiAnn thought about taking a picture of the tattoo, but then she'd have to see it again. She just typed the code down in the Notes app so she could look at it later. LeiAnn tucked her phone back in he purse.

She bent over and softy kissed the child on her cheek. "Bye, sweetie. I'll see you tomorrow."

It was hard for LeiAnn to leave her baby girl. Something was pulling her back to the room. Something drew LeiAnn to her baby, something about the girl that LeiAnn didn't know.

***

Lora walked outside of her small country house, feeling the cool winter air sting her face. The clouds were light and fluffy and the sun was brought out above the clouds.

Her back ached; she needed to stretch out a while and just fly.

Yes, fly.

Her broad, sugar white wings unfurled through the slits of her coat. Her wingspan was 15 feet across.

Lora jumped up and flapped her wings a few times until she caught wind and soared. Her curly, honey-blonde hair whipped her gleaming face.

Lora didn't really know what to call herself. She usually referred to herself as an angel, except she was a lot like a human. She was beautiful like a vampire and as nice as an angel. People were drawn to her; people were drawn to anyone of her species. She had wings that could tuck tight against her back, but she still had to wear baggy tops everywhere.

Most people of her species were single. Because people are drawn to them, they cheat on their loved one. Then the other person finds out and--yadda yadda--they're single.

Angels, I'll call them, were different than most... immortal people. They didn't live forever, though they do live a long time. Usually when someone dies of old age they die around 200. No one has ever passed 232, which was one of Them.

Them. They just don't have a specific name because having no name helps them stay hidden and unknown to the humans. They're the rulers of the angel world. They make rules and laws for the angels and if the laws are broken, you will be punished.

That is, is They find out. It is very easy for Them to find out because like vampires, angels have specific powers. It is rare that two angels have the same power. And when I say power, I mean like mind reading, mimicry, etc.

Angels also have supernatural strength, speed, and agility, and they are very intelligent.

Anyway, Lora felt the rush of flying. She started feeling full filled, kind of like after a human takes a nap, they are no longer tired. Lora still sleeps, but after her after change date, she only has to sleep about an hour a day. Her change date was when she turned 14, but change dates can be anywhere between 13 and 17. Change dates are determined after the child is born. The baby is brought to Them, where their identification code and change date is tattooed on their wrist.

Lora was lost in thought when she saw it. A big group of something--something dark. It wasn't them, because They have light, pale wings.

As They approached, Lora could tell that They were not birds. They had the same body as angels. But they also had sleek black wings.
