I shuffle awkwardly in my seat as the car continues steadily down the road. Currently; I am stuck between my big brother and Luke, squished in fact. I can't even pull my phone out of my pocket to play Crossy Road or listen to music. The car is completely silent except from the twins giggling and chatting excitedly in the back. I glance over at Luke, who is casually scrolling through twitter and I sigh loudly.
"Mother, could you put some music on please?" I ask, the silence in the car steadily numbing my brain. She nods swiftly as we stop at a red light. Her hand reaches over to the stereo and switches the radio on. The announcer of the local radio station is babbling on about some stupid football match. Hey, I guess it's better than silence.
"...A well played match, anyway next up we have the chart takeover and to kick it off we have a new release from 5 Seconds Of Summer. This is Amnesia" I stiffen in my seat as the first chords of Amnesia start playing. As Calum's sweet voice starts to sing I fight the urge to cry or sing a long. I drop my head as tears slowly and inevitably drop from my eyelashes. This song gets me right in the feels every time I hear it.
"Hey, are you okay?" Luke whispers, placing his hand on my clenched fist which is resting on my jean clad thigh. I glance up at him through my hair to see that he is nervously chewing his bottom lip. My stomach flips when his hand gently brushes my hair out of my face. "Why are you crying?" He asks, taking my face in both of his hands and scanning me. His light blue eyes are heavy with worry whilst they gaze down at me.
"I get emotional because of Amnesia, problem?" I respond, raising my eyebrows at him. His eyes widen and a small smile spreads itself across his beautiful lips.
"That's cute" He replies, blushing slightly. My cheeks become heated as his compliment washes through my ears. Nervously, I drop my eyes to the pocket on my skinny jeans and my hands fiddle with the hem of my All Time Low t-shirt. "Look at me, Princess" Luke susserates. His hands are still cupping my cheeks. My breath catches in my throat at the sound of the nickname. I look up at him timidly and as soon as I do his lips claim mine, causing my eyelids to close. We remain pressed together like this until we are rudely interrupted by my little sister.
"Mother, they're at it again" She sighs, glancing back at us from the passenger seat with a look of disgust when we pull away from each other. My cheeks are flushed heavily and so are Luke's as embarrassment consumes both of us.
"You guys better break that up. We're at your gran's house now" My mother shouts back at us as the car pulls into the driveway of my gran's quaint bungalow.
Once the car comes to a complete stop it is a flurry of clicking seatbelts and bodies clambering out of the cramped vehicle. When I go to jump out of the car Luke suddenly grabs my waist and gently sets me down on the gravel drive beneath us. I smile up at him as he takes my hand in his, lacing his long fingers with mine.
"Um, my family is a tad crazy" I warn Luke, gently leading him to my Gran's open front door.
"I see where you get it from then" He chuckles lowly in response, winking slyly at me. I let out a slight huff, smacking his arm lightly when we step into the house, and I shut the door behind him. "I was joking, honey. I'm the one that's crazy. Crazy for you" He whispers softly in my ear before placing his lips gently to my temple. My response is an uncivilized high-pitched snort that erupts from my nostrils, resembling the sound of a piglet.
"You're a right sop, you know that?" I speak, grinning back at him as we walk down the hallway in the direction of my Gran's living room.
"Yeah, but I'm your sop" He chuckles, taking hold of my hand and briefly pressing his lips to my knuckles. I stifle a giggle and lead him into the spacious living room. We sit ourselves on one of my gran's pale green leather sofas opposite her arm chair, which she is perched in with her fluffy, black cat, Lizzie, sitting proudly on her lap. Her curly, brown permed hair is tousled as she glances at us with green eyes from behind her oval shaped glasses.
"Hello. You must be Luke" She speaks, still studying Luke and making an assessment of him. Luke nods nervously in response and I squeeze his hand in reassurance.
"Yes, it's a pleasure to meet you... Um" He replies, leaning towards me slightly. "What's her name?" He asks, whispering lowly. I snicker slightly as his nerves ripple off of his body in defined waves.
"Her name is June" I respond, quietly.
"...June, it's nice to meet you" He finishes his previous sentence, thanking me under his breath. Gran smiles happily, still observing the pair of us.
"It's nice to meet the young man who stole the heart of my oldest grandchild" She grins, reaching for a tin of photos that are placed on the wooden table beside her fabric arm chair. "I remember when your grandfather and I were like you two, young and in love" She reminisces whilst she opens the tin and pulls out a stack of photos. She gestures for me to come closer, so I diligently stand by the side of her chair and look at the pictures.
"Is that you and grandad? I ask pointing a black and white picture of a couple sat on a blanket in a field. She nods with a slight smile placed upon her lips.
"Yes, I was 17 and he was 18. He'd just got a job at the office in the new factory so we celebrated with a picnic, and later that week he proposed to me" A tear steadily falls from her left eye as she continues to speak. "I still can't believe it's been 5 years since he passed away" Her voice cracks slightly and I wrap my arms around her shoulders in a bid to comfort her.
"He wouldn't want you to be upset, granny" I smile at her, attempting not to cry myself.
"No, he wouldn't" She laughs half-heartedly, shaking her head. "The old fart was too stubborn to even shed a tear when his mother and father passed away" Gran chuckles slightly before noticing my mother stood in the doorway.
"I think that's enough, Mum" She sighs, before stepping into the room. "Anyway, the timer went off in the kitchen" Mum adds, causing Gran to pack away the pictures and hurriedly walk into the kitchen with her. I slump into her arm chair, trying to wipe away my tears without anyone noticing.
"Are you okay?" Luke's voice causes my head to snap up immediately. I stare at him for a second before shaking my head and allowing more tears to fall. Somehow Luke manages to squeeze into the armchair and place me on his lap, encasing me in his strong arms. I snuggle into his chest, gripping the material of his hoodie tightly.
"I just miss my grandad" I manage to choke out in between sobs. Luke runs his hand over the back of my head, whispering reassurances and muttering "I love you" occasionally.
