the world brushes past me
my life,
                 flitting
      fleeting,
                        slips by
                                    right past me

eyes glazed
mind hazed

like ash through a sieve
minutes brush by

I have to keep reminding myself to live
not just watch it float by

live, dammit, live

but I'm numb, I'm static
I'm the discarded plastic lid
in the river
                         just watch me float by

but you,
when I'm with you,
the minutes slow
we take up time like we're meant to
we taste each bite like it's a well-seasoned
quesadilla fresh off the stove
like we're home and we like it there
there's no breeze in our air,
so we're sweaty, but we like it--
we savor each salt-lined breath slowly
each touch
each laugh
each bite
each of your heartbeats against mine
none of them have slipped past
and they don't flit
no, they sway
they take up space
they fill my soul with moments of you

so when the rest of the world
        starts
                       to
                slip
                               a
                                    w
                                              a
                                                         y

I still have something to hold onto.
