BELLE OF THE BALL
Part 1

Satine had attended a bunch of galas before, but never in her life had she planned one.

Amongst the heartbreak and the inevitable drama that entangles itself within a young girls life, Satine found peace in the pleasures of organisation. Fabrics, silverware, incredible ballgowns, it was all she allowed herself to think about over the past week. She needed something time consuming to help her cope with the misery Taehyung had subjected her to.

She had Jimin of course, who definitely made the chore of breathing just that slightest bit easier. He looked after her in ways no one ever had before - not even Diana. She only wished he had the power to truly save her, but as their relationship developed, so did the need to separate him entirely from her future endeavours.

Only because she cared.

After all, Satine Fontaine was not the type of girl you end up with, not if you have any sense.

Waltzing around the suite Jimin had booked out for them both, Satine landed in front of the mirror, appreciating herself and how everything was slowly coming together.

Her hair was styled to perfection, deep waves clipped at the side with a diamond pin. Her makeup flawless. She was sculpted like fine art with the richest most glossy red lips symbolising everything but purity.

This was the life she was expecting when coming to New York. Luxury, wealth and happiness. Pure unadulterated happiness.

In the back of her mind, she knew she wasn't going to be able to continue living so comfortably if she stayed with Taehyung. There was no ignoring the fact that he was even more broken than before and well-past the point of a mental breakdown. He was depressed and alone with no job and no financial support. Oh, how the tables had turned.

A part of Satine was relishing the fact that she was finally back on top and not acting like some pathetic little puppy that could only function under the love of their owner. Reflecting back at her was the real Star, and why was that so bad?

Probably because it wasn't the version Taehyung fell in love with.

Who was she kidding? Yes, she had been distracted over the past week, but no matter how hard she tried, her crow was forever pecking at the back of her mind. Love has enough power to drive even the sanest of people crazy.

The slight creak of the door had Satine biting down on her lip, recognising his presence instantly. He was, as per usual, looking as handsome as ever in his traditional black tux and chestnut hair pushed back off his face. She had seen him day in and day out in professional attire, but there was something different about the way he was holding himself.

Confidence really is the most attractive thing a man can wear.

"You know you really shouldn't sneak up on a lady..." She smiled into her shoulder, not giving him the luxury of her eye contact.

He let out a small scoff. "Come on, Coquette, you wouldn't even flinch if I was a massacrist." Jimin's eyes travelled down the black and gold couture gown just skimming her curves and sighed. "You look phenomenal."

The way he addressed her wasn't dissimilar to how he normally did, but after the nights they shared, she couldn't help but catch her breath a little.

"Thank you."

He circled the room in his Italian loafers, stopping every so often to gaze at Satine fixing herself in the mirror. She radiated pure opulence and the type of attitude that could only come with wearing a five-thousand-dollar dress.

"You've come a long way..."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Satine's eyebrows had never raised so high.

"The girl I met all those months ago, though fiercely attractive, was sporting a thrifted suit. Now she's standing before me in... Versace, is it?"

Her cheeks flushed red, not just from Jimin's charm, but from the memories of how she used to dress.

"You're the one that set up the fitting, silly!"

"Mmm, I do have my connections, don't I?" His smugness, whilst convincing, was transparent. Satine knew him like the back of her hand and he wasn't nearly as conceited as he was known for being. "Oh, that reminds me..." He pulled a box out from under his arm and set it down on her dressing table. Satine was intrigued at first and took a step forward, but her chest soon tightened.

A gold glittered box enriched with a black satin ribbon. It was just like the ones her dad would gift her with. It had been a long time since she had thought of him.

"Take these as a token of my appreciation. You've worked hard."

Her manicured fingers took hold of the end of the ribbon and pulled, her stomach fluttering as Jimin stood so keenly. He took off the lid and allowed Satine to rummage through the black tissue paper to reveal her present.

"Fuck me!" She gasped.

"I did..."

Ignoring his comment, she lifted the gold embellished Jimmy Choo's up to the light.

"You've got to be kidding me, these are like thousands of dollars!"

"I'm well aware, Coquette." His laugh lulled into a soft sigh as he watched her beaming down at his gift. "But you're worth every penny," he whispered earnestly.

He wondered if she remembered their conversation all those months ago, the one where he promised her the world. He hadn't given her that yet, but a coat and the shoes were a good start.

Reaching out to take her hand, he guided her over to the divan. The split in her dress parted as she draped herself down, showing off her bronzed leg. Jimin crouched, tracing the curve of her calf until he reached the arch in her foot.

"There you are, my lady."

"I love them. Thank you, Jimin. Truly."

The blaze in his eyes - she hadn't seen anything quite like it. The look of pure adoration and devotion. The look of love. The look she caught Taehyung showering her best friend with.

It felt nice. No. It felt amazing.

Cupping his cheek, Satine leant forwards and left the daintiest kiss on his lips.

"You deserve it, Coquette."

After parading up and down the suite, Satine touched up her lipstick for what she thought would be the final time, and turned to Jimin waiting with his hand out.

"Eager are we, Mr Park?" The event wasn't due to start for another twenty minutes.

He always had the most incredibly charming smile, and a way with words sure to bring the brightest of hues to Satine's cheeks.

"Actually no, I'm quite content for the time being just appreciating my diamond all glammed up. You're too preoccupied with looking all pretty to talk my ear off for once." His tongue poked through his cheeky grin.

Teasing was one of Satine's favourite ways to pass the time. She was pretty sure it added a few years to her lifespan.

Making her way over to him, she draped her arms over his shoulders and blinked innocently. "I thought you enjoyed my vocality? I mean, that's what you told me last night when you were-"

Jimin's tongue pressed against his cheek as his trousers tightened. The memory alone was enough to drive him mad.

"Now now, Coquette, you never know who's listening. Not everyone deserves to know how filthy you are."

Those blood-red lips, so tauntingly delicious. They were begging to be bitten like a sweet, juicy apple hanging in the Garden of Eden. She had already offered him a bite that morning, but all it did was unleash a mind-altering need to have them pressed against his own constantly. Jimin was inherently clean and tidy, intent on strutting about the place without a speck of lint clinging to his designer suit. But the thought of Satine's cherry gloss smeared around his face, staining him with sin, gave him an entirely different outlook on life.

Dirty was always better.

"I don't think I'm going to be able to concentrate tonight unless I fuck you in that dress." He twirled a strand of her striking hair, rubbing his freshly tinged fingers together.

A bold smile blanketed her features, and she lifted the slit in her dress until her entire bottom half was on show.

"No underwear?"

"No underwear," she confirmed.

"Oh, Coquette, what am I going to do with you?"

***

"Come on!" Diana yelled, kicking her gown behind her. "Fuck, these things are uncomfortable."

Taehyung appeared in the doorway of his room, tugging at his collar. He had rented a suit – a grey blazer and slacks with a classic white shirt. He didn't need anything flashy; he was already handsome enough. There are certain types of men with the ability to disrupt a room in a plain tee and joggers, and Taehyung was one of them.

"I don't care if Satine's going to be disappointed, I'm not wearing a fucking tie-" His words dulled into a heavy breath once his eyes settled on the woman across from him.

A rose if he had ever seen one. A dress so fiercely red and reckless that he almost didn't recognise Diana underneath it. Her hair was pulled back into a loose bun, softened by pieces framing her elfin face. She was the type of beauty to bless museums, portraits, history books - not a dingy loft in Brooklyn.

"Wow," was all Taehyung managed to utter.

At that moment, no one else could have possibly compared.

"None of that! I can't bear to hear your compliments." She ushered him along, trying her best to ignore his gormless expression. "Are you ready?" She raised a brow at him sneakily undoing his top button.

"Not for the gala, but to finally meet this fucking CEO..." A nervous cough left his lips. "Even if I think it's going to go terribly."

Diana smoothed out the creases in her dress, eyeing the duffle under her bed. She had that suspicion too. She had always followed her gut instincts, and it wasn't about to betray her this time. It was humid out, but as the evening progressed, a breeze formed. An iciness she had only felt once in her life back in late October of 96.

"It'll be okay, just don't do anything stupid like smash a glass over his head." The thought was appealing, even for Diana.

"Can't promise anything..."

"Okay, mister, let's relax a bit... If you go downstairs and yell for a taxi, I'll be right down after you. Just gonna pop some lippy on."

Nodding, Taehyung dragged his feet out and left Diana in the middle of her greatest psychological fight. Something was telling her to bring it.

It would just be a precautionary measure. It's not like she would ever use it.

***

Though Taehyung was once set on moving to New York to follow his dreams, along the way he found himself avoiding the city. Brooklyn was more cultured and atmospheric, it held everything he'd ever wanted and more. Great music, great bars and the greatest company. A part of him couldn't believe he was on Fifth Avenue, standing in one of the most famous hotels in the world. He couldn't have been further from his comfort zone.

Even the toilets showed up his twelfth-grade prom and they really pulled out the stocks for that one. Obviously, he didn't go, he just saw the pictures in the yearbook. He liked to pretend it was because he was too cool, but truthfully the burns littered up his shoulders and neck were the real reason he stayed home that night.

The colossal space around him was encompassed with the most gorgeous golden accents. Three dazzling chandeliers hung evenly apart, decorating the ivory ceiling and coating the space with a rich glow. Beneath his ridiculously expensive brogues, the ones he bought to make Satine happy, laid a marble floor. Taehyung wasn't one for detail, but even he couldn't help but admire each tile and how the polished cream was enhanced with tiny flecks of gold.

Occupying the space were hundreds of people dressed to the absolute nines. They sipped at their champagne like the societal royalty they were, all whilst whispering up in awe at the scene unfolding.

At the far end of the room sat a staircase so grand that it put every Disney movie to shame. Taehyung had seen the classics, but only because of Diana. He had realised pretty early on that he had a particular liking for both Ariel and Belle.

He followed the steps up until he reached a delicate hand gracefully rested over the bronzed handrail.

Amateurs may say Cinderella was made for that ballroom, but experts would throw their heads back in a fit of laughter at the cheek. At the top of the stairs, with her arm linked with the ever so perfect Jimin Park, was the prize. Satine. He reminisced the way her slender body would arch for him and how his name would spill out of her lips in the most seductive of moans. She looked like a million bucks with her glossy hair styled perfectly in an abundance of red waves. And her sleek black dress, god was it decadent, clinging to all the right places; sweeping behind her as her embellished stilettos took a step at a time. She looked incredible.

So incredible that he'd almost forgotten about the other beauty on his arm, the one that made his heart stop the moment he saw her. Although, he had come to the conclusion at that moment, that Satine wasn't a match for her.

"She looks amazing," Diana gasped, squeezing his hand.

"She does," he agreed, feeling his heart quicken at the contact. It was safe to say they weren't talking about the same person. His eyes drank in the small brunettes' curves and the way her figure was accentuated in her backless red gown. He adored her smile, especially when she was looking at something she loved.

"I wonder how much all of this cost?"

"For us?" He scoffed. "Five years' worth of paycheques... combined."

Both Diana and Taehyung weren't fooled by luxury, dissimilarly to Satine who looked like she was used to it. It was surprising, seeing her usual clumsy self that couldn't walk in a straight line without tripping over her bovver boots, floating through the place so elegantly in four-inch heels.

Diana pointed to the bouquet of roses decorating the refreshment table. "That vase over there is a month's rent."

"We should nick it then; record deal went out the window along with JK. Could do with the extra cash."

"Mmm, might be fun... Won't get far in these but it's worth a try." She tapped her heels against the marble floor like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

Taehyung chuckled to himself. Mmm, there's no place like home.

Whilst Diana scanned the space, Taehyung scanned her. He was beginning to think there was nothing more important than the woman next to him and that was the hardest thing to admit. Especially as Satine sashayed over, smiling like a god-damn fool.

How was he ever going to admit his true feelings for Diana when he still held such an apparent fondness for her best friend?

Reluctantly ripping his hand away from Diana's, and flinching as he felt her heart drop, it wasn't hard to grin at his Red Sonja approaching.

"How sweet!" Satine gleamed and wrapped her gloved hands around them tightly. "You both look absolutely magnifique!" Her French accent was thick and corrupt as it spilled from her rouge lips.

Taehyung flinched at just how normal she was acting after everything.

She was carefully examining them both, taking in their body language and their not-so-secret glances. It was agony but she worked through it with a smile.

"Red, can we talk?" He asked quickly before being distracted by a hand slithering its way around Satine's waist, giving it a light squeeze before he eventually introduced himself.

"Ah, this must be the famous Taehyung," he beamed, holding his hand out to shake. "Jimin Park, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. I've heard... great things." If his words weren't blatantly laced with distaste, his impeccable bright smile may not have given it away.

Jimin, similarly to Satine, was trying to keep it cool and casual but there was a level of disdain to every word he uttered in Taehyung's direction. After all, he was the one that had broken his diamond's heart that one too many times.

"Hey," Taehyung turned his nose up at his hand, nodding dismissively before setting his sights back on Satine. Her smile was clearly fake, and it hurt. He had done this to her.

"Ah and I see you've brought... Diana was it? Looking lovely tonight, welcome!" Everything was meticulously calculated. Jimin had no desire to make a scene, but he despised the sheer audacity of the man breathing before him.

Bringing Satine's best friend and the girl he'd been having an affair with behind her back was low, even for a struggling musician.

Still refusing to give him his full attention, Taehyung's next snide comment had Jimin chuckling under his breath. "I've sure heard a lot about you, Mr Park."

"Please, call me Jimin. Any close friend and boyfriend of Satine's is a friend of mine. This woman has saved my backside more times than I care to admit. This place wouldn't run without her."

Satine's eyes shifted from Taehyung and landed on Jimin. She was unintentionally biting down on her lip at the unexpected compliment.

He meant it with his whole heart but that wasn't the reason he was showering her with so much affection. The truth was, he loved the way their faces would unknowingly curl up as the guilt seeped through their pores, leaving them with an awful green hue.

They didn't deserve her. No one did.

"Come Dotty, let's get a drink!" Satine linked arms with her friend, guiding her over to the array of flutes lined perfectly in a row. She needed to get away from the unbearable tension and him.

Standing opposite each other, Taehyung couldn't think of anything worse than making small talk with his rival.

"She looks good tonight, doesn't she?" The CEO brought his champagne to his taut smile.

"Who, Satine?" Taehyung had to push his fists into his blazer pockets just to stop himself from smacking the man his girl had spoken about for months on end. "Yeah, she does."

"No, I meant Diana," Jimin deadpanned, watching with inner amusement as all the colour drained from Taehyung's face.

You can't love two people at once. Not unless you're two different people and Jimin knew that. That's why he was enjoying his conversation with Taehyung so much. He knew it was pure torture having to talk about Satine when he was clearly in love with Diana. He also knew it was pure torture for him to pretend like he wasn't so infatuated with the little brunette. It was lucky she wasn't there to witness.

"Oh, yeah, she looks good too."

"Good..." Jimin repeated with a click of the tongue. He should have slit his throat for even comparing the two girls. "I wouldn't have even asked the question if I was referring to Satine. It's a known fact that she's the most beautiful one here. Maybe even in New York. Hell, maybe even in the world." He was dancing on thin ice, but enjoying it thoroughly. "Satine and the word good do not belong in the same sentence together."

The subtle screw of Taehyung's nose and the vein protruding out of his neck proved that he was reaching the end of his tether. He snickered and glanced over to the two girls twirling on the dance floor, accidentally bypassing Satine to watch Diana throw her head back in glee. "I can see you're fond of her," he spoke through his gritted teeth.

Jimin was watching intently too, though his eyes wouldn't dream of leaving the redhead.

"Very much so," he confirmed. "Professionally speaking, of course. As I said, she's amazing at her job." There was a subtle smirk glued to his face, one that Taehyung noticed straight away. It had him wondering what Satine could do as an assistant that was so amazing.

He had a few ideas that he'd hoped was only his mind toying with him.

"Yeah, she's a great girl."

"You're such a sweet couple, Satine has a picture of you two on her desk. I see it every day and it convinces me that love truly does exist." The vomit was coming up. Jimin wanted to burn that picture. The only thing that got him through seeing it sat next to her rouge coco lipstick was that he'd tongue fucked her over that desk and would often imagine the look on Taehyung's face if he ever walked in on them.

"Yeah, we're happy," Taehyung confirmed, nodding through his lie. He didn't know how long he was going to be able to keep up the act. There was no way he was giving Jimin the satisfaction of anticipating their demise.

But he had already called it.

"Between me and you," Jimin knocked back another drink before planting himself parallel with Taehyung's ear, "if you want to sell this whole love story you've got going on, don't gaze at another woman. It's tacky."

Taehyung's heart fell into his stomach, leaving the most nauseating feeling in its place. If Jimin knew... then did Satine?

"You should take your own advice," he shot back, feeling his body burning up. "I'd advise you not to fuck with my girl." He knew he wasn't being fair; not when his heart beat for two people now.

But the feeling that resided in his stomach once Jimin's cocky little mouth opened once again, was enough to have him dragging him to the battlefield.

"Oh, but is she really yours?"

Taehyung wasn't exactly intimidated, more overwhelmed by the sheer power and assurance and the intense form of capability the CEO exuded. He knew what he wanted to say but he just couldn't get the words out of his mouth quick enough.

"Enjoy your evening," Jimin nodded, brushing a speck of lint off Taehyung's blazer with a smug smile. "Oh, and don't forget to enter the raffle, the prize is five-hundred thousand. You're gonna need it if you continue with both women. They can be rather expensive, take it from me."

Son of a bitch.

Taehyung stood there laughing incredulously at the man's utter bravery.

There was always going to be tension between the two of them when the masculine urge to fight for power and dominance consumed their every thought.

What happens when you put two alphas in a room together? It's either kill or be killed.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

-

Diana's and Satine's hands intertwined as they danced ridiculously around the ballroom. Their dresses flicked with every spin, causing a rippling wave of awe to spread through the space as the most beautiful giggles escaped their spinning forms.

It was all fake - on both their parts - though Satine was always ten times better at pretending than Diana. Maybe it was her loyalty, or maybe just pure decency, but no matter how much she hated her, she was still her best friend and always would be.

"You look pretty, Dotty," Satine gushed. "Red always was your colour."

It wasn't in Satine's nature to be so boldly complimentary of other women. But don't be so quick to assume, it's only because no one ever had anything nice to say about her and Satine believed that kindness was becoming well overrated.

"Thanks," Diana faked a smile, looking over her friend's shoulder instead of holding her eye. "I don't need to repay the compliment, right? I'm sure you already know you look great."

A small chuckle left Satine's bold lips.

"Someone's sour..."

Diana's face trembled with irritation. The stress the redhead had inflicted on Taehyung was hardly a joking matter.

"Someone's wondering where you've been for the past week." That's when their eyes finally met. "We were worried sick, Star."

Satine's impatience filled her with a suppressed urge to tap her foot as she waited for Diana to finish her sob story. She had been treated like dirt by the two people she loved most, and yet she was the bad guy.

"Wow Dots, this party sure is the perfect setting to discuss our drama. Do carry on." Her eyes rolled as she grabbed another champagne flute and gulped it down in one.

"Fuck, Star, be serious for once! You've been gone a week without so much as a text. He would barely eat, speak, sle-"

"Sleep with you?" The words left Satine's lips before she could even process their implications. This was why she practiced abstinence.

Diana strained to hear something, anything, but there was only silence. No more clinking of glasses, insipid chatter, men trying their hardest to woo society's most eligible females. There was only the wicked, most taunting smile that spoke a thousand words, blanketing her friend's irritatingly faultless face.

"I, I don't know what you're talking about..."

The air was stale.

"Hmm, sweaty upper lip, goosebumps, watery eyes... That's my little liar." Satine had no time for it anymore. All she wanted was Diana's confession, for her to beg for forgiveness, even for her to reveal her undying love for her crow. Anything would have been better than the purebred betrayal. "I've known for a while now, Dots, don't fret. I was just waiting for you to do the right thing."

Even if she had found the words, Diana wouldn't have been able to articulate them into a sentence without sounding like an abominable bitch.

"Mmm, this is the reaction I was expecting, minus the crocodile tears, of course." An amused sigh escaped Satine as she watched her friend try and figure out what was going on. "Betrayal sure does turn a bitch crazy. Now, would you excuse me? I have guests to greet and connections to make."

As composed as ever, she flicked her waved hair over her shoulder, and smoothly sashayed away.

Diana was left crumbling; scrambling around for something to say or do. If there was one thing her best friend was able to do; it was completely wiping all traces of air from her lungs.

"Hey?" Taehyung approached and nudged into her. "Where's she going? I need to talk to her."

Diana's body flicked around, manically, grabbing hold of his suit with her fists clenched and demeanour spoiled. "You need to choose!"

He laughed.

"What are you talking about, you nutter?"

"You need to choose, Tae," Diana almost dropped to her knees and begged. "You need to choose right now. Fuck. Look, I'm in this for the long haul. I love you. I fell in love with you the moment I saw you up on that stage and I'm never going to be ready to give you up. All I need is for you to choose me." She caught her breath before continuing. "I want to leave. I want to move countries, hell, even continents. London." Her eyes sparkled as she held onto his hand. "As much as I love this city for introducing us, it's brought so much pain as well. Move with me, Tae, let's start fresh. I'm asking you this time. I'm asking you to choose me."

Suddenly it was only them in the room. Everybody else ceased to exist.

"What's going on?" He rubbed her arm gently just to reassure her. "Why are you all sweaty?"

"Tae, please. Please, I'm begging you to just choose."

For all his faults and all his failures in life, Taehyung just wanted to be loved; to have stability. That's what he thought he got with Satine. Back at the start, she was his world, the only person he wanted to wake up to and fall asleep next to at night. But everything changed once Diana walked into the bar that night - drenched from the rain yet embodying the sun.

He was face to face with the woman of his dreams yet that fucking question was still circling his brain.

Who would be easier to let go?

"I love her, Di..."

"And what about me?"

It was the hardest thing he would ever have to admit, it would change everything.

"What about me, Tae?"

Those three words settled on the tip of his tongue as she looked up at him with her big hazel eyes. Through all his ups and down, there was only one constant. One extremely annoying, messy, brutally honest constant who had such a tight grip on his heart that he couldn't imagine it beating the same again.

Truthfully, his question had been answered the moment Satine ran out that day. No matter how hard it was to see her go and how badly he wanted to apologise and set things straight, he knew she would be okay. The thought of Diana leaving, however, left the darkest, most emptiest feeling in his gut.

So he found himself saying okay. He didn't need to say anything else, she understood. Diana's face burst with life, her cheeky laugh blessed the room, and she brought her chipped red nails to her lips in exasperation.

"Really?" She released in an excitable squeak. Her head turned to the exit, and then to Satine disappearing out of the ballroom. "How about we get out of here? Come on let's go!" She was on the verge of dragging him.

Diana's suggestion was tempting, very tempting. The way she raised a brow and bit on the end of her tongue had him almost trembling in his spot.

"Fuck, I would love to but it's a big night for Satine. Shouldn't we still support her? You know, before I ruin everything."

He had never seen Diana's face drop so suddenly; all of the previous seduction was whipped from her face.

"What about a break on the roof? Come on, I bet the view's incredible!"

Sighing, Taehyung checked his watch. "Okay fine, but only for a bit."

He watched fondly as his date started jumping up and down in her red dress. He had always found her innocence beautiful.

"Okay, let's go!"

"I'll get us some drinks and meet you up there?"

Diana's crazed gleam didn't settle, but that's one of the many reasons he adored her. They always say opposites attract.

"Okay, don't be too long though!" Then she was off in flash, her backless gown flowing behind her.

The look that rose to Taehyung's face as he watched her climb the grand staircase, glancing over her shoulder at him so gorgeously, it was the look of pure and utter devotion. It was the type of look that every girl dreams of.

He couldn't believe how long and drawn out his decision was. How could he be so cruel, fooling around with the both of them when it was so clear who he wanted? He was being greedy, indecisive and a cheat. All of the traits he despised in others. The traits he despised in his father.

The girl poking her head out from behind the banister, trying to make him laugh, that was her. That was the love of his life. Diana was going to be the person he would settle down with, no questions asked.
