There is no greater sorrow than to recall in misery the time when we were happy
(this takes place at the end of ep 3 so after cora and boyd had been caught and after stiles tells scott that they are human sacrifices)
despite knowing about all of beacon hills problems stella was driving out of town completely ignoring the protests of the pack (mostly derek, scott and stiles).
Passing the sign indicating that she had just left beacon hills she sighed remembering everything that had happened
{15 hours ago}
"hey you can't just leave like this not right now ok you have to stay" her boyfriend practically begged her "look i don't know how you know deucalion or what your deal is right now but you have to stay do you understand. you cant leave me. please stella." he shouted over the rain
"that's where you're right you dont know me, not really anyways and i will love you forever but you have to let me go ok please you have to let me go"
"we are you're family stella. i love you, we all love you, hell even derek loves you but here you are leaving us as soon as these sacrifices start when we need you most and maybe you're right i dont know you fully but thats on you not me"
"look i know shit is happening and yes you are my family but there are some bad people from my past that are coming to get me and i cant lead them here so they can rip away everything i love and trust me they will" she pulled her jacket tighter to her chest as her hair got soaked
"and we can protect ourselves. we have scott, we have derek, hell we even have allison a werewolf hunter for god sake. and dawn you're so called sister that is a witch of she's from you're past why isnt she coming with you"
"because they don't want her they want me and they wont hesitate to kill anyone in there way to get to me. so im not going to risk there life over mine. im not going to risk my brothers life, my sisters life my best friends life and im most definitely not going to risk you're life because i love you too much to loose you. so you need to accept this decision and let me go."
"please stell just tell me before you go was coming here to beacon hills and making us love you for this short period of time before ripping our hearts out and leaving us with just a note worth it. huh did you enjoy it." stiles ran his hand through his wet hair as he walked towards her
"no i didn't enjoy it. and if you were in my position you would do the same thing. do you think i wanted to face everybody telling them i had to leave after my life finally got put back together no so now were both going to shut up and im going to kiss you. ok"
and that's what they did the couple had their final kiss in the rain like the in all the movies. except this one didn't have a happy ending. this one ended with the girl leaving driving away and disappearing in the distance the only glimmer of hope of the girl coming back was the piece of paper that she had put in his hand with her burner phone number which he clutched to his chest trying to process what had just happened.
tears fell from stellas eyes as she started her 39 hour drive to virginia or more specifically mystic falls. she tried to push stiles heartbroken face to the back of her mind but it was hard the mental image was scarred into her mind she looked straight ahead at the the road. fight the pain. fight the guilt. fight the regret. turn it off. as she closed her eyes a searing pain shot through her neck her angel wing tattoo glowing just like it did before stopping her from reliving her pain. she hit her steering wheel in anger and screamed willing herself not to turn back.
{4 hours until destination}
stella drove with the soft hum of music playing on the radio her burner phone ringing beside her. hesitantly she answered "what im driving" she spoke emotionlessly
"relax darling its only me" the familiar voice spoke
"kol i was waiting to hear from you"
" ah yes i've thrown them off the beacon hills trail they are officially not going there anymore i told them that you were sighted in alaska but i wouldn't go back there for a few weeks"
stella took a breath of relief " i wont thank you so much"
"dont worry about it its the least i could do anyways davina and marcel are calling me see you soon?"
"depends if we all fucking make it out alive oh and tell davina and marcel i love them" she spoke before putting her phone away and thought back on her new found association with kol
{24 hours ago/ 9 hours before she left}
stella sat on the edge of beacon hills preserve cliff clearing her head she sighed in the silence until she heard someone come up behind her she pinned them against a tree holding a knife to their throat "wow they were right you are really strong"
"kol you have some fucking nerve coming here" she pressed the knife a little harder against his throat
"im here to help davina and marcel are busy"
"since when do you give a shit about me" she said venom laced in her words
"i said i'd do right by you and here i am so listen carefully. klaus has started searching for you again and god knows how but they somehow suspected california and were getting close to beacon hills so you need to leave if they no longer believe that you are here then they will come here and do absolutely anything and everything to get you back so if you want to protect your people you need to leave"
"how do i know i can trust you. how do i know this isnt a trap" she questioned him
"call davina or marcel or listen to my heart. they. are. coming." he spoke clearly with no indication of him lying
"maybe you're just a good liar" she said before calling marcel and confirming with him
"i am truly sorry stella but to protect the ones you love you must leave them" and with that he sped away leaving the red head to ponder
{end of flashback}
the last 4 hours of the drive passed by so fast and the next thing stella knew she had drove past the mystic falls sign and drove through the town to the salvatore estate. she took a deep breath before getting out the car and right on queue someone stepped out of the house immediately noticing the red head and going up to her noticing the look oh her face "did you leave?" he asked her softly
"i had to stefan. i had no choice" she said as he hugged her. stella burying her head in his shoulder as she sniffled holding back tears
"come on lets get your stuff you're staying here" he went to get her bags from the car
"of course why else would i be here" she sarcastically spoke pushing the reminder of stiles to avoid another breakdown. stefan just laughed and smiled at the girl which warmed her heart.
stefan didn't know where stella went only that she had left new orleans with dawn so he had no idea the connection that stella had with beacon hills. or the people she met. or her new powers. or her boyfriend. but as he walked in the house with stella holding his arm and leaning on his shoulder his only thought was keeping stella safe not willing to loose another of his close friends.
they spent the rest of their day moving stella into the room across from stefan. as he helped her unpack he came across a bunch of pictures at the bottom of her suitcase. one with scott melissa and stella after melissa legally adopted her. another with allison lydia dawn and stella at the mall dress shopping. another with dawn ace and stella the day they moved in. and one with derek and stella when she skipped school to spend a day with him after everyone said he was boring. and a few with stiles and stella one being when they went on their first date which went wrong and they ended up eating burgers on the jeep looking a the sunset and another one which scott took of them when stella was playing with stiles newly grown hair as he slept on her lap. and the last one with the sheriff stiles stella isaac dawn lydia allison scott melissa and luca which she forced them to take but it turned out pretty good
stefan looked towards the girl who was in too busy to even notice him staring until he walked up to her saying "they look like nice people" which caught her off guard before she spotted the pictures in his hand and looked at them sadly
"yeah they were i love them and i always will ill tell you about them sometime" she looked to stefan who smiled at her before handing her the photos and squeezing her hand for comfort before walking out closing the door behind him
stella sat on the bed and looked through the photos playing every one of them in her head recalling the memory of how each of them happened trying her hardest not to pick up her phone and calling them she placed them on her bedside table before she lay down in the unfamiliar bed falling asleep dreaming of her home in beacon hills.
