Danse POV
".... this... is disgusting...
(Y/N) complained, looking down into the murky river water,
"Sturges said that sewer pipe is our way in... sadly..."
She pointed to a grate,
"There are worse places to go."
I tried to reassure,
She gave me a look that said she didnt believe me before she jumped in.
I hesitantly jumped in after her.
The water was so dark and murky I couldnt see what was infront of me...
I could just make out (Y/N) opening the gate and we both swam through.
I got out first, my armour shiny from the water.
I leaned down to help (Y/N) out after me.
"I... I am never doing that again!"
She puffed, standing up and ringing the water out her clothes.
There was a keypad on the wall and (Y/N) went straight towards it,
She typed in something then flipped a switch and another gate opened beside us.
We both swam through quickly
We fought our way through some mounted guns and turrets,
Swam through more grates and sewer pipes,
Took out a few synths until eventually
"HHHHH-YA!"
(Y/N) kicked down an old rusted door,
It was such a crisp white inside the room it hurt my eyes...
(Y/N) blinked a few times to get used to the bright colour before moving on,
She walked to a lone terminal shoved in a holotape, typed in something and then--
There was a blinding blue light form the room beside us and then!
"Man that was something else!"
Preston followed by Sturges and a large group of minutemen came out of the room,
"I guess I'm still in one piece!"
He said checking to make sure he didnt loose any limbs,
He looked back at all the minutemen,
"Everyone ok...?"
Everyone nodded,
"Good. So this is the institute. They could have just held out down here forever. Why did they have to mess with us?"
(Y/N) nodded in agreement,
"They think they're better then us."
"They should have read their history. That hasn't ever turned out well. In any case, here we are. No turning back now... you're going to need this-"
He handed (Y/N) something,
"Its a Fusion Pulse Grenade, once its attached to the reactor it can detonate remotely. Get that on the reactor and we can destroy everything the institute has ever built. Just make sure we give the civilians a chance to escape, we're not here to commit mass murder. We better hurry, they're going to realize what's going on before too long."
(Y/N) gave him a nod, but I looked at him worridly...
Sturges reassured us that the teleporter would still be working by the time we got back, he had built an exact replica of the one at the Brotherhoods base thanks to the blue prints (Y/N) kept with her.
We all headed deeper in,
We managed to let the civilians escape and took out all the synth soldiers and anyone else that raised a gun at us,
I was bloodied and bruised but so was everyone else, my armour banged up and marked from gunpowder and explosions.
Soon the whole lobby was cleared and Sturges voice called through the intercom,
"Hey there general, I found the reactor... looks like you gotta get yourself to the Advanced System area. Only, well, its locked. I cant override it from here, looks like it can only be opened from the Directors Personal Terminal..."
Shaun's...
"You're going to need to get access for it somehow."
(Y/N) looked over at me, her eyes suddenly full of sadness and worry...
We still hadnt finished our conversation about what to do about Shaun...
She took my hand in hers for reassurance, my ring warm and comforting against my finger.
We stepped into an elevator together, just barley fitting with my armour that made us both think about the first time we met.
It reached the bottom, we walked through some confusing hallways and climbed up some stairs, until we reached the main room!
We both rushed to the terminal only to see,
"I didnt expect to see you again..."
Shaun said, his voice was dry and raspy yet he still managed to sound stern.
He looked really pale...
"Come to see the reactor have you? We got it working without you..."
(Y/N) looked down at her son in horror, realising she had to make a choice now...
"I'm here to blow up your reactor Shaun. Put an end to the institute."
Shaun glared back, watching his mothers eyes full with tears.
"Well, atleast theres no need for guessing games now. It's not enough that I lay here dying... now you plan to what, destroy everything? Tell me then. Under what righteous pretense have you justified this atrocity?"
He asked,
His eyes flicked to me then quickly back to his mother,
"Seriously? All the enemy's you've created you cant imagine why I'm standing here?"
She said disbelieving her voice shaking with sadness,
"Perhaps I didnt think to count you among them. Well, none of it matters now, I suppose. You'll accomplish your task and ruin humanity's best hope for the future. The only question left is... why you're standing here. Is it regret? Or did you come here to gloat."
(Y/N) sucked in a sharp breath at Shaun's jab at her,
"Shaun, if you help me, fewer people will die. Will you?"
(Y/N) ask clinging to her hope, hope that her son wasnt an entirely bad man...
"Why would I ever consider helping you?"
He said with a venomous tone,
"Help me and I promise I'll protect any survivors to the best of my ability."
Shaun sighed,
"Very well. The terminal behind me... type in the code 9003, that will disable some of the synths..."
He looked over at me now,
"... a synth...."
He looked back at (Y/N),
"And here I thought you and your group were against their kind..."
He gestured lazily at me,
"Now go... just leave me."
He turned over in the bed with his back to us,
(Y/N) reached out a hand to him but thought better and wipped at her eyes before entering the code into the terminal,
"It worked..."
The minutemen outside were holding off the few synths as (Y/N) and I ran for the Reactor.
We finally made it, the radiation was really really bad.
Taking out the synths was the easy part the hard part was getting close to the reactor,
"Here-"
She handed me her gun while she picked up a hazmat suit,
"I'll do it- the suit will slow me down so you make a ran for it and-"
I grabbed her hand before she could zip up the suit over her vault suit.
"No- no way I'll do it."
"Danse now is not the time-"
"(Y/N) I have a power suit..."
".... good point..."
She muttered, forcing a laugh.
I pulled her in for a tight hug, holding her close.
"I'll be quick..."
"I'm not leaving without you."
She told me, handing me the grenade with shaking hands.
I gave her a lingering kiss before grabbing a spare power suit helmet and stepping inside.
the suit helped as I rushed to the centre of the room,
I managed to throw open the hatch and attach the Pulse Grenade.
I turned around, sprinting back to the door hurrying back to (Y/N) on the other side.
"There..."
I took the helmet off,
"Eas- OOF--"
(Y/N) slammed into me, holding me in a hug.
I slowly pulled away,
"I wish we had more time-"
"But we gotta go yeah you're right!"
We were rushing out the room when we got teleported and I rubbed my eyes to see-
"Please dont leave me mom!"
I stepped out the room to see (Y/N) with a young boy who looked just like her,
"What did you call me?"
She asked hesitantly,
"Mom! You are my mother aren't you?"
The kid asked, I guessed this was Child Synth Shaun.
(Y/N) looked over to Preston and Sturges who looked just as shocked as she did, then she looked over to me.
I starred at Shaun, then looked up at
(Y/N)...
Hesitantly I nodded... giving her a gentle smile.
"Yeah... yeah I'm your mom. Let's go Shaun."
She smiled at him, he bounced up and down and hugged her legs,
"Thanks mom!"
She patted his back,
"Alright Sturges let's fire her up."
Preston said as I pulled (Y/N) and shaun into the room with the Minutemen and Preston,
"Alright here goes!"
Sturges clicked a button with a flourish and rushed into the room with us,
More blinding blue light and some strange noises and then-
We were all standing ontop of a high building in the ruined city looking down at the CIT building,
"Hey General, whenever you wanna see "hummintys last hope for the futre" go up in smoke just hit that button."
(Y/N) and I turned around to see a giant red button,
She looked over at the CIT building, fresh tears in her eyes,
But then she turned around and looked at the minutemen, at Preston and Sturges at Shaun.
And then finally she looked up at me, her eyes shinning.
She seemed...hesitante.
I slowly stepped out of my armour and took my place beside her, slipping my hand into hers.
"Ill go to my grave with no regrets... that's thanks to you. So I want you to do the same... whatever you decided... I'll be there with you..."
She gave me a teary smile,
"You sound like you're going to roll over any day now."
We both chuckled..
"Thank you Danse..."
She looked down at the CIT ruins,
"Goodbye Shaun... say hi to Nate for me."
She hit the button and the explosion was so big that it took a few minutes to destroy the whole space,
A giant gaping hole was in the earth, there was no sign a building or an underground society was ever there.
"...I miss them..."
"I know..."
"...but now I have you."
"Yes, you do."
