I woke up on my wedding day with a terrible feeling in my chest. I pushed it away as being nervous, but couldn't help but think that something bad was going to happen today. I took a deep breath, trying to ignore the feeling and pulled myself out of bed, just in time for the door to open and Alice walked in along with two other servants.
"Come one, let's get you ready, Morgana and Gwen are coming here later so you can see our dresses." Alice said, making me nod as she pulled me into the bathroom and began running a bath for me. I spent as much time as possible in the bath, Alice helping me to wash my hair. Then I got out and dried myself off, putting on a white slip.
Alice led me over to my vanity and I sat down, letting her and one of the other servants there start on my hair and make-up. It took a while, but soon enough it was finished, and Alice looked at me in the mirror. "You look great." She whispered, and I could see there were tears in her eyes. I turned around to her and grabbed her hands. "Thank you, for everything you've done for me." I said, and she smiled at me.
I stood up from my chair and pulled Alice into a hug. "I'll miss you." I whispered and she whispered it back to me. Suddenly the door opened and Morgana and Gwen came in, their hair and makeup already done. "Okay, so Gwen will help get you into your dress, and we'll get Alice's hair and makeup done." Morgana said, and I placed my hand on hers.
Gwen led me behind my screen and the other servant came as well. The other servant grabbed a dress from behind a curtain, and I took a few seconds to look at the beautiful dress before letting them put me in it. It felt amazing on me, and I knew that it was my favourite dress that I'd ever worn. I twiled as much as I could behind the screen and Gwen smiled at me.
"You look beautiful." Morgana's maid said, making me smile at her. "I love it." I said, and I was about to say something else, but was cut off by Alice. "Come on, we want to see it." She called, and I took a deep breath before walking out so the two others could see it.
"It's incredible." Morgana said, and I blushed at her statement. I thanked her and she dismissed the other servants. "Come on, we'll get into our dresses." Gwen said, and they went into the room next to mine, leaving me to look over my dress, taking it all in. I did actually love it a lot, and I hoped that Arthur and Alex liked it as well.
I sat down on my bed and waited for the other three to come out, and while I did I looked around the room, taking it all in, every little crack in the wooden table, and the slightly crooked bookshelves. I let out a sigh, knowing that I would be leaving this room soon.
The door from the other room opened and the three girls walked out, making me smile widely at them. They all looked absolutely beautiful in their blue dresses, which were similar but not exactly the same, which I felt was a nice touch. "You all look amazing." I said, pulling all of them into a hug.
"What do we do now?" I asked, not really knowing how today was going to run. "Well, someone will bring your bouquet up, and then we have to wait for Uther to come and get us." Morgana said, making me nod.
The four of us sat in a comfortable silence, before there was a knock on the door and Alice went over, coming back with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, passing them to me as she sat back down. I looked at them, before bringing them to my nose and smelling them, smiling at the wonderful fragrance.
Then we waited again, before father arrived, and he just opened the door and walked in, making all four of us look up. "Everything's ready." Was all he said, making us all stand up. I went over to father and he held his arm out to me. "You look beautiful." He said, and I thanked him, being too nervous to say anything else.
The five of us headed down to the hall, and we got down there far too quickly for my liking, and we were soon ready to walk in. "I'm proud of you, Elizabeth. I know this has been difficult for you." Father said, making me slightly shocked. Father was never one to show too much emotion, even towards Arthur, but his words made me feel better about this.
The doors opened and music began to play, Gwen and Alice walked in front, with Morgana just behind them, and then me and father. I started walking through the hall with my father, trying not to look anywhere but the back of Morgana's head. However, when my eyes did waver I found myself looking at Arthur, who was looking back at me. I could tell there were tears in his eyes, and I let out a small sigh.
When we reached the end of the hall I smiled at Alex who was standing in front of me, in his best blue tunic. I passed my bouquet to Morgana and she went to stand to the side with both our servants, while father went to sit next to Arthur. I turned to face Alex and Geoffrey started the ceremony, concluding it with the ring giving.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may now kiss the bride." Geoffrey said. Alex lightly grabbed onto my hands, and looked down at me with a small smile on his face. I leant up and placed a gentle kiss on his lips, which he immediately reciprocated. The kiss only lasted a few seconds before we pulled away, and the hall erupted into cheers.
Then Alex held his arm out to me and Morgana passed me my bouquet back, and I walked down the aisle, avoiding eye contact with everyone. Alex and I walked through a few halls and into another large room, which was decorated to fit the theme of the wedding and there were tables everywhere, with a dance floor in the middle of the room.
Alex and I walked across the hall and sat down at a long table, taking the seats in the middle. Father sat down next to me, with Arthur on his other side. Then King David was on Alex's side, with Morgana next to him. I looked around the room as people filed in and was glad to see that they had given Gwen and Alice proper seats.
As we sat down food was brought out and onto the tables in front of us. I looked up at Alex and gave him a nervous look. He placed his hand over mine and quietly whispered to me, "It's almost over." I nodded slightly and forced a smile onto my face, beginning to eat, even though I knew that my heart was sinking lower and lower as I was starting to realise what had just happened.
Father made a toast to us, but I didn't listen to him, too caught up in my own thoughts. I heard the scrape of cutlery and saw that Father had sat down and everyone was starting to eat, so I picked up my knife and fork and began eating myself. Soon enough everyone was finished, and I knew that it was time for Alex and I's first dance.
Alex and I made our way to the middle of the room and I couldn't help but feel a pain in my chest. This was really happening, and there was no way I could stop it. Alex held his hand out to me and I took it gently. His grip on me was firm but comforting, as he pulled me closer to him and music started to play. I smiled gently as I recognised it. It was the song we had first danced to years ago when I'd had my first proper ball.
I looked up at Alex, who simply smiled at me, before pulling me along in the dance. I held him close, clinging to the comfort his body was providing, even though deep down I was wishing I was pressed against someone else. My mind began to wander as I thought of what the future would hold for me. I would have to leave my home, everything I'd ever known, and move to another country, where I would be thrown into a crazed royal life. I didn't know what the next few years would hold for me, but I knew that they would be hard, without Morgana, Gwen, or Alice. Without Arthur.
I felt Alex squeeze me lightly, making me look up at him. "Everything will work out, I promise." Was all he said, before bringing me closer so that my head was on his shoulder, and I was looking behind him. I was about to fall back into my thoughts, but I was distracted by movement coming from the upper level of the hall.
I tried not to bring attention to myself, and instead just focused on the spot where I had seen something, while there was a slower part of the song. I managed to spot a person up there, hiding between the columns, but I had no idea why he was there.
Until he raised his arms, a crossbow laid perfectly in them. I gasped quietly, making Alex move, but I just laid my head back down on his shoulder and continued to watch the crossbow. The man then moved the weapon around and aimed towards the two of us. If we didn't move it would hit Alex right in the back. I barely had time to think before I saw him release his arrow, so I did the first thing that came to my mind and pushed Alexander out of the way.
I gasped as the arrow embedded itself into my chest, forcing me back due to the pure force of it. I vaguely heard someone call my name, but it didn't register in my mind. All I could feel was pain. I felt someone's hand on my shoulder and I looked up to see Alex standing there, a look of concern falling across his face, spreading through his whole body.
"Lizzie!" I heard someone say, before I leant into Alex, my arms began to cradle my chest where I knew the arrow was protruding. I could see black spots crossing across my vision and I could hear more people crowding around me, along with father's voice calling out. I just about felt someone pick me up, but lost any idea of what was happening, only being able to focus on the pain.
