Vanessa's POV:
School
The hallway
Shawn and I stood with our lockers open and looking threw our stuff.
"Shawn, needless to say, I'm a little upset." Cory says slamming mine and Shawn's lockers shut
"You're always upset." Shawn says
"True." I said
"You see this morning Im having breakfast with janitor Bud." Cory says
"Janitor Bud?" Shawn and I questioned
"I owed him." Cory says
"And uh.. it comes up that last night you were on a date with Dana Pruett?" Cory says
"Yeah. I went out with Dana. So?" Shawn confirms
"So, first of all you don't tell me and second of all Dana Pruett...she's a very nice girl." Cory says
"Yeah, very nice." Shawn nods
"Shawn, a nice girl like that can ruin your reputation. I mean, janitor Bud and I were shocked." Cory says
"Cory you're being over dramatic." I said
"And Bud's seen dead bodies." Shawn says as the two boys ignore me
"I'm saying." Cory says
"So, uh... what was it like going out with a nice girl?" Cory asks
"Cor, I'm not the type of guy that talks about the women I go out with." Shawn says as he walks away from the lockers
"That's a lie." I said to Shawn as Cory and I follow
"Yeah you are." Cory says to Shawn
"Where you been? If it wasn't for your stories and the little pictures you draw, I wouldn't know nothing." Cory says
"Well, I don't want to talk about Dana and don't ask me to draw her." Shawn says
"You must, uh really like this girl." Cory says
"I like all girls." Shawn says.. yeah except for me
"And, so far, they've all liked me." Shawn continues
"Morning Cory, Vanessa." Dana says as she walks up to us
"Dana." Cory says
"Morning." I said
"Um, Shawn could I have a word with you private?" Dana asks
"Yeah, sure. I'll be right over." Shawn says
Dana walks away to wherever her and Shawn are going to talk
"Ooh, in private... what could this be?" Cory says
"Well she probably wants to finish what we started last night so if I'm late for class, Cor fall asleep without me, Ness do my late assignments." Shawn says then he walks away from us
After Dana and Shawn were down talking Cory and I walked up to him. He was sitting on the bench next to the trash and phone Cory sits next to him. Shawn pulls me onto his knee to sit.
"So?" Cory asks
"Cor, Nessa I got a surprising problem with the Dana situation." Shawn says
"What? She wants another date with you, and you don't know how to let her down?" Cory guesses
"That's the usual." I said
"She wants another date, but with another guy." Shawn says
"Well, it's probably some pumped-up, pretty boy jock. You know." Cory says
"It's you." Shawn says
"Huh. I was right." Cory says
"Cocky much?" I said
"No, no, I can't, Shawn. I mean you asked her out first." Cory says
I got up from Shawn's lap
"No, no, no. This could be good for you." Shawn says getting up "She's great. Funny. Sexy penmanship." Shawn says, I roll my eyes
"Does she have the little hearts over the Is?" Cory asks
"Yeah." Shawn replies
"I love that." Cory says
"Who doesn't?" Shawn says "so listen you know, feel free. Go for it." Shawn says
"Are you sure about this?" Cory asks
"Yeah I'm sure I'm not going to be alone for long." Shawn says.. just date me
"Hey Rosie, Geena!" Shawn yells as two girls walk past us
They turn around and wave. They're both wearing leather jackets and I have a feeling their bad news.
"These are the girls I should be going out with anyway." Shawn says then he walks away with the girls
Cory looks confused and I know I have the same look on my face
The next day
School
Cory and Dana I guess went on a date. Shawn's a little jealous.
Lunch
Cory, Shawn, and I sat at a circle table. I push my tray towards Shawn. I wasn't hungry.
"So she really said you're not boyfriend material?" Cory says
Not boyfriend material? Where is this girl?
"I really liked her." Shawn says
why can't you really like me..
"I'm surprised 'cause she seems like the type of girl that'd end up with me." Cory says
"That's a bit rude, Cor." I said
"I can't end up with nice girls?" Shawn says
"No, no calm down my Shawn. I mean I would love to go out with some of the girls you go out with but I can't 'cause I'm stuck being the nice guy. And all those girls want from me is.. directions to you." Cory says
"What do you mean by 'those girls?'" Shawn asks
"You know.. sexy, hot, flashy... the kind of girls I've never gone out with in my life." Cory says as Topanga walks up
"Oh I love life." I said as I saw Cory realize his possible fate
"Expect one time. Hello, flashy." Cory says
"That's okay Cory. I'm happy to be thought of as a nice girl." Topanga says
is that what I'm seen as too? I guess I'd find out if I actually had a boyfriend but the boy I want doesn't like me.
"Yeah, yeah, nice girl. Have a seat." Shawn says
Topanga sits next to me and Cory
"Look Shawn, if this has anything to do with Dana Pruett, I don't have all the information. I've only been in the bathroom three times this morning." Topanga says
Shawn looks at me
"I've only been in the bathroom once so I don't know anything." I said
"So Topanga as the hottest and perhaps flashiest of the nice girl camp, would you ever consider going out with Shawn?" Cory asks
"Well, he'd have to ask me." Topanga says
"Topanga, would you ever consider going out with me?" Shawn asks
I would..
"No." Topanga says
wow I wish I could tell Shawn I'd go out with him.
"Well why won't you go out with me?" Shawn asks
"You want the truth?" Topanga asks
"Yeah I want the truth." Shawn says
"You couldn't handle the truth." Topanga says
"I could handle the truth." Shawn says
"He could handle the truth." Cory says
"He could but he also couldn't handle the truth." I said
"No he couldn't." Topanga says
"Give him the truth." Cory says
"And you'll take responsibility for how he feels about it?" Topanga asks Cory
"Absolutely." Cory replies
"I won't." I said
"You don't understand women, you don't know what we are, you don't know how we feel, and you don't know what we think." Topanga says
"I understand Nessa." Shawn says
"You see us as dating objects and the faster we are the more you want us, and until you can grow up and see beyond that, no matter how many girls you go out with you will always be lonely." Topanga says
Shawn looks hurt and confused
"You don't see me as a dating object. I'm just your friend." I said
"You let her say that to me?" Shawn says to Cory
"She's lying." Cory says
"Shawn look at yourself you go from girl to girl that makes anyone who'd even consider a relationship with you afraid." Topanga says
"Afraid of what?" Shawn asks
"Of getting hurt. Every girl thinks you'll eventually get bored and move on." Topanga says
"Wow. They know." Shawn says
History
"And so had press coverage into the private lives of past politicians been as invasive as it is today, such men as Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy might never have been elected president." Mr. Feeny says
"Mr. Feeny, would you consider John Kennedy a great president?" Shawn asks
"Well, his time in office was short, but yes he accomplished a great deal." Mr. Feeny says
"Now the fact that he was a babe magnet didn't make him any less great did it?" Shawn asks
he's stressing out over what Topanga said
"In many people's eyes it did, Shawn. Less of a husband, less of a leader." Dana says
"Yeah." All the girls said
"Well... I think we've heard from the women. What do you think Mr. Hunter?" Mr. Feeny asks
"Well, all I know is it's not easy for a guy to change who he is." Shawn says
"Yeah." The boys said
"Whoa, whoa, steady, steady." Mr. Feeny says
"You can't change if you don't try." Dana says
"I can't try unless you give me a chance." Shawn says
"Mr. Hunter you've spurred a debate." Mr. Feeny says
"Yeah, fine. When's detention?" Shawn asks as he closes his books
"No, no, no. It's a good thing. I like to hear your opinions. In fact I'd like to hear everyone's in an essay due tomorrow." Mr. Feeny says
The class groans and then the bell rings and I walked out.
After school
Shawn's
Cory, Shawn, and I enter Shawn's apartment. We start taking off some of our winter gear. Mr. Turner is in the kitchen preparing dinner
"Shawn, look don't let what Topanga said bother you, ok? I mean if I listened to everything Topanga told me-" Cory says "you guys would still be together." Shawn interrupts
"Then what are you listening to me for?" Cory says
"Mr. Turner, see what you can do with this." Cory says walking up to Mr. Turner. He still has his coat, scarf and hat on and one glove
Shawn took off all his winter gear. I had taken all of my winter gear off
"Wanna fill me in Matthews?" Mr. Turner asks
"Yeah. Dana Pruett." Cory says
"Nice girl." Mr. Turner says
"Shawn Hunter." Cory says
"Oh." Mr. Turner says
"Ok now you're up to speed. My work here is done. Wish me luck I'm going back out in the blizzard with one mitten. Godspeed to me." Cory says
"Don't get frostbite." I said as Cory walked out the door
"Hey, Shawn, you ok?" Mr. Turner asks
"I really like Dana, John, and I'm pretty sure that she likes me but she's afraid to get involved with me." Shawn says as he sits down
I plopped down on the couch
"Ah the Hunter reputation, huh?" Mr. Turner says as he comes to realization
"And I used to be so proud of it." Shawn says
"Wow, Shawn, the only thing you've ever worked on it blows up in your face." Mr. Turner says
The door opens and Cory comes back in
"I lost my other mitten now." Cory says as he walks in closing the door behind him
"Isn't that something? Don't mind me. I'll just look." Cory says
"What was I thinking even asking out a girl like Dana Pruett?" Shawn asks
"Because you liked her and obviously she meant something to you." Mr. Turner says
I could feel tears on the verge of falling down my cheeks
"Yeah but what's the difference? I mean I know exactly where I belong back with all those fast, flashy girls." Shawn says
"It was blue, fuzzy." Cory says holding up the blanket from the back of the couch
"You know Shawn it seems to me the people you care most about in the world are not very fast and flashy." Mr. Turner says
Cory starts digging in couch and basically pushes me off the couch
"Hey, look. It's the scarf of mine I lost last year. Yes." Cory says putting the red scarf on
"Help me up loser." I said to Cory holding out my handing
"Ok fine." Cory says holding out his hand and instead of getting up I pulled Cory down next to me
"You mean Cory, and Vanessa, don't you?" Shawn asks
"You think? See these two right here? These are your best relationships. You guys listen to each other, and you really trust each other." Mr. Turner says
"And that's what girls are looking for?" Shawn asks
"Oh, yeah. Especially the nice ones." Mr. Turner says
"That's funny, 'cause Dana's the only girl that I've ever really listened to." Shawn says
"Does she know that?" Mr. Turner asks
"I can tell her." Shawn says
"Do better. Show her." Mr. Turner says
Cory had gotten up from the floor
"I had it the whole time." Cory says as he opens up his coat to see his blue mitten and then he pulls it out
"Idiot." I said pulling myself off the ground
"You gotta love Velcro, huh? Cory says
"You're the dumbest person ever." I said
Cory walks away ignoring my comment
"Just 'cause you ignore me doesn't make it not true." I said as Cory walked out the door
Later
Shawn went to chubbies for Dana. I walked home, freezing.
As I walked I saw this boy. He had brown eyes and brown hair and was about 5'10."
"Hey you look cold." The boy says
"Thanks captain obvious." I joked
"There's a coffee shop just 5 minutes from here I'll take you." He says
"Ok, what's your name?" I asked
"Dylan and yours?" Dylan asks as he grabs my hand
"I'm Vanessa call me Nessa." I said
"Nice to meet you." Dylan says
The coffee shop
Dylan and I sat in a booth. I ordered a hot chocolate and Dylan order some coffee. He paid for me.
"Vanessa I was wondering if you wanted to go out?" Dylan asks
"Yeah, sure." I replied
"Hey do you want something to eat?" Dylan asks
"No I'm alright." I said
3 weeks later
Dylan and I are going steady.. after our 2nd date we made it official. I haven't told the boys yet. I mean we've only been dating for 2 weeks.
