أصبح نفوق أعداد كبيرة من الدلافين والحيتان بشكل جماعى على الشواطئ ظاهرة مخيفة ومتكررة فى السنوات الأخيرة ففى عام ٢٠٠٨ نقلت الأنباء أن قطيعا ضخما من الدلافين خرجوا على شواطئ نهر ضحل جنوب إنجلترا، ورغم محاولات السكان والغطاسين لتوجيه القطيع ومساعدته إلا أنه مات منهم 20 دولفينًا وفى جنوب المحيط الهندى اندفع ٥٥ دولفينا إلى شواطئ جزيرة مدغشقر فى مشهد انتحار جماعى مأساوى للغاية، وخلال العامين ٩٦ و٩٧ انتحر ٣٧ دولفينًا على شواطئ فيرجينيا والحيتان كذلك سجلت لها حوادث انتحار جماعية وفردية ومتكررة.

فلم تعد الحيتان قادرة على توجيه نفسها إلى الوجهة الصحيحة فتضل الطريق وتموت ناهيك عن الملوثات الصناعية القاتلة التي يتم رميها فى البحار والمحيطات فى محاولة لدفنها أو التخلص من شرها، وفى المقابل ينقرض عدد لا بأس به من الأسماك والطحالب والقشريات بسبب هذه المخلفات، ولا تزال بعض الدول تدفن مخلفاتها النووية والصناعية في البحار والمحيطات حتى يومنا هذا، وقد أكدت الدراسات وجود عدد من الأمراض المزمنة لدى الأسماك في المناطق التى توجد بها مثل هذه المخلفات.
لقد لوث الإنسان عالم البر ولم يكتف بذلك فانطلق يعبث بالمحيط وعالم البحار والرسالة التى يبعثها المحيط للبشر قوية للغاية، وجثث الدلافين والحيتان النافقة على الشواطئ بالعشرات لا تقل أهمية عن جثة الطفل السورى الذي لفظه البحر على الشواطئ الأوروبية وتصدرت صورته الموجعة صفحات الجرائد والأخبار، فانقراض نوع أو أكثر من الكائنات الحية خطر على حياة الإنسان.
