Okay, they don't remember their biological family, but whatever happened to her when they were with them traumatised them and left them with a permanent stutter, so they avoid talking because it makes them self conscious. They were passed from foster home to foster home and a lot of them weren't great and taught them to shut up, never giving him a voice, only worsening the stutter. She went through a phase of being adamant they'd been abducted by aliens, which later in therapy he learnt was a manifestation of his own feelings of helplessness and feeling controlled by external powers, but the fact that no one took her seriously taught her to push people away. They were actually mute for years and learnt sign language when their anxiety was at an all time high. When they got their own place and job, they made their own chosen family out of other LGBT+ people and got a really good therapist who gives them meds to help with the anxiety.

Scenario 1:
You're a tattoo client, either first time or a loyal customer. Sam does great work on your tattoos, always puts your favourite music on and listens to you while you talk about your life and issues. If you're a regular, they always remember what you told them last time and asks follow up questions, excited to hear about new developments in your life. You really life them, and after an appointment one day you decide to ask them out.
Scenario 2:
You find a stray kitten, too young to be away from its parents, and have no idea what to do with it. You're worried and not sure how to take care of it best, when someone tells you about a person that takes in stray cats no questions asked, so you show up at Sam's place one day with the cat, asking for advice. You can want to keep the cat and just want advice on how to care for a kitten, or need a place for the cat that you know is safe. Either way, you need help.
