M. Bourne

All of my life I've been questioning myself. Not so much who I was as a person, but where I was originated from. I was adopted into an orphanage in downtown New York. I'll spare the sad stories of the horrific child abandonment that happened when I was just a baby, but each passing day in that orphanage struck deeper pain to be wanted as I saw each one of my friends get taken away into loving homes with wonderful parents. That's all a child wants. To be loved and to be wanted. Although, eventually, I had to grow up.

And that's when the biggest change in my life happened. I learned that someone did want me. I learned that He wanted everyone and that He loved everyone. I quickly realized that He was the One my heart had been desiring for all along.

I changed. My life changed. He had been with me all along and now I was dedicating my whole self and service towards Him. The greatest part is that I found more people just like that, and so we started an organization to make sure we could spread His light throughout the streets of America.

But I have to admit, no matter where God led me in life, that one question still remained in my mind...

What happened to them?

I had been angry for a long time about the situation. I remember being so determined to find them, but it had been useless and I couldn't get my answer.

That's when I got a call, about four days ago. Such a strange conversation. It could have been anyone, a scammer, a traitor, someone who was just trying to mess with me.

So it could have been anyone, really, and with no digital proof to track the caller or where the call was coming from, I was doomed at the loss of meeting this mystery person.

And I applaud whoever that person was because instead of the question "what?"  going on in my mind, I now get to ask the question of "how?"

How do I get rid of them?

Vanessa Vaughen

"Do you think we should at least invite Giselle and Charlie?"

Matthew shrugged. "They said they were tired, let's give them a break. We've been spending a lot of time together lately."

"Yeah, that's true."

She quickly pulled out her phone and tapped a quick message to Giselle, asking if she was okay.

They walked down the hall towards the elevator. Although she tried to ignore her feelings, she could still sense that there was something going on with her best friend. And right now, she really wanted someone to tag along with them.

"You look a little nervous."

"It's not that I'm nervous, I'm just a little unsure of how I should be feeling."

"What do you mean?"

Vanessa sighed. "I don't know, maybe it's like you said, we've all been spending too much time together."

"You want a little you time?"

"Exactly," she smiled.

Matthew nodded. "That's too bad."

Vanessa scoffed. "Wow, and I thought you were going to be understanding this time."

"Excuse me, I am understanding, now come hold my hand so we can walk into the restaurant without looking weird."

"The things I gotta' do for justice," she murmured under her breath.

They headed into a restaurant they found from a long Google search, this was the only one that stayed open this late and had an available reservation.

"This looks classy," Vanessa looked around at the room. The smell of something magnificent was roaming through the air and light chatter was coming from the tables around them.

The waitress led them to the table and gave them their menus.

Matthew opened his menu. "What on earth is 'duck squash?'"

Vanessa scrunched up her nose. "I don't know, but it doesn't sound too appetizing."

Matthew grinned. "Do you think they actually squash a duck's guts and serve it? Is it like chunky duck soup?"

It took all of Vanessa's self-control to not gag at the moment. "Alright, alright, real mature."

"It sounds horrible," he chuckled, continuing to scan the menu.

Vanessa opened the menu and started to read all of the tiny cursive words. Some sounded disgusting, some she couldn't even pronounce.

Just then, a lady came around with a basket full of roses.

"A rose for the lady?" She looked at Matt.

Vanessa started to smirk. Matthew looked at the lady all confused.

"Uh, no thanks."

Vanessa's smile dropped as the lady walked away. "Wow, cheap date."

Matthew leaned back. "This isn't a date."

"I know, but if you were really committed to your husband-ing role, then you would have gotten your lovely wife a rose," she continued to look at the menu.

"This is strictly professional, no roses were in Bourne's instructions."

"Neither were dinner dates, yet here we are."

Matthew leaned back in his chair, lowering his menu. "What are you trying to do?"

"Nothing, I'm simply just saying that if you were my husband you would suck."

Matthew scoffed, putting a hand over his chest. "Wow, Vans, I'm hurt."

Vanessa shook her head, smiling. She couldn't remember the last time he had called her a nickname.

"This place sucks, why don't we just go to a McDonald's or something."

Vanessa immediately put her menu down. "You read my mind."

~~~
To their surprise, the nearest Mcdonald's was a twenty-minute drive from the restaurant they were at. Once they got their order and drove up to a free parking space near a clearing at the side of the main road.
Vanessa grabbed her bag and took a whiff of the salty smell. "Mmm smells good."
"Nothing can beat fast food at ten in the night," Matthew said, opening his straw wrapper.
As they took a few minutes to simply eat, the car became full of somewhat comfortable silence.
"Are you getting used to me?" Matthew looked at Vanessa as she dug into her burger.
Vanessa looked back at him. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, in the beginning, you didn't like me. But now you can eat in front of me without having to roll your eyes at anything I do."
She smirked. "I never said I didn't like you."
"You sure acted that way."
"Well, if I remember correctly, two weeks ago you didn't like me that much either."
Matthew shrugged. "People can change."
Vanessa looked down. "We're roomies, I had no choice but to get used to you snoring."
Matthew laughed. "Oh, right, and I had to get used to your perfume smelling the whole hotel room whenever you put it on."
She shrugged. "At least it smells good."
"Still makes me sneeze."
The silence fell on them again. Vanessa could tell he was looking at her. Part of her started to wonder if she got ketchup smudged on her cheek.
In all honesty, working alongside Matthew hasn't been terrible. It was annoying at times, but it wasn't something she couldn't handle for the next little while.
"Was it always like this for you? When you went out to do missions, I mean."
Vanessa thought for a minute. "No, usually missions would be over within a week, a week and a half tops."
Matthew shook his head. "This guy must be that bad if it's taking us longer."
She frowned. "I've been trying to catch this guy my whole career."
"I can't imagine what that's like for you and the others."
She looked up at him. "It can be difficult, but you kind of have to expect that. You can't just go into something like this thinking everything is going to work out."
Matthew nodded. "I'm praying we'll catch him, especially before anybody else gets hurt."
"Me too."
They finished their meal in that same comfortable silence again.
"You know, in all honesty, I've never had a partner before. It was usually always me by myself," she shrugged shyly, "I'm kinda glad you were the first one."
Matthew smiled, he appeared to open his mouth to reply but suddenly Vanessa's phone went off. It was a text back from Giselle.
Gi-Gi: Something's not right. Where are you?
