Jiang Cheng stared at the closed Hanshi, his eyes weary and tired as he watched the silhouette of his Alpha as he mourn and punished himself after the events of that night.

Yes, even after years of lies and denials his heart and body never let go of its claim for the older man. Despite parading as a beta and walking with his chin held high among the cultivation world, inside his soul burned as an omega.

Creatures thought to be born as delicate, future bearers of society meant to be protected but also viewed as weak. That was what Jiang Cheng was. But as stubborn as he was, of course he trampled against it and desperately held onto a lie just so he can make his mother proud and not get that disappointed look from the eyes of his father.

But as always fate has a cruel way of fun with him and at their presentation, while Wei Wuxian presented as a powerful Alpha without any problem, here he was clutched in pain after a delirious heat followed by his presentation as an omega and without any ado he was hidden and instructed by his mother that from that day on he was a beta.

His soul was sealed, his scent suppressed and a weakened link with his family. Jiang Cheng learned the pain of isolation from that day. However a sunlight peaked through his dark days when they went to Cloud Reccess to stay a year to learn from the righteous Gusu Lan grandmaster Lan Qiren.

There standing beside his uncle, who was observing all the new disciples learning that year was the esteemed Zewu Jun, the first jade of Gusu Lan. And the rumors did the man no justice. He looked like a God that came down to grace them mere mortals with his heavenly presence.

The man was glowing with his handsome face and white robes that seemed to repel any stains of the earth from dirtying it. But more than that, his smell was divine. For Jiang Cheng whose nose was impaired from the sealing and could hardly smell any pheromones – which helped his disguise as a beta – this was the first time in forever where he could smell an Alpha's scent and he swore he could feel it encircling his whole body enveloping him in its warmth.

Their eyes met that day and his heart was forever stolen. A smile was given to him and he could feel his cheeks burn. His sealed omega was clamoring in his soul begging to escape and run towards this man but he stayed rooted to the ground as realization hit him.

This man. This magnificent man in front of him was his. His soul mate, the missing piece of his soul.

The thought both made his heart soar and dread. He could picture it, living blissful days surrounded by blue flowers and clear spring lake while their children played in the grass, devoted to his husband and family. And the sadness that gripped his soul as his mind reminded him that such dreams are impossible.

He was to live his life as a beta, heir to Yunmeng Jiang and future Sect Leader. Omegas are not leaders, that is not the path laid for him.

So as much as his heart yearn for the Alpha, his Alpha, he cannot abandon the life that was instilled in him since that day. He was not an Omega. This man is not his. Why would he be? He was the pride of his clan while he was a disgrace, an average man that's struggling to rise against his clearly better Shixiong.

His confidence was too broken and his soul too shackled for him to just announce to this person that he was his. So he clamped his mouth shut and entered the Cloud Reccess without smiling or looking back to the man who stole his heart.

Jiang Cheng secretly enjoyed the days in Gusu, his heart, the kind man that he is saw his mediocre self studying in the library after a particularly bad grade and he was there wasting his sleep away while Wei Ying easily aced the test despite only having time to flock around and tease the stern second jade.

It was shameful at first that the man he love and look up to see the red marks on his test but he did not say anything else, only sat down in front of him and offering to teach him more on the arts. With a blush on his face he weighted the pros and cons.

And his traitorous heart only saw the positives. He will have a senior helping him raise his grades and he will have plenty of time to stay with the man. To smell his alluring scent so close to him that he felt he was almost reaching for him.

That was bad, he thought and he hesitated but the pull of their bond was too strong to ignore. So he agreed to his help and those were the blissful days of his childhood. To be in the presence of his Alpha, sorrounded by his scent.

When he was particularly feeling sad, Jiang Cheng always look back at those days as his happiest and most blissful time in his youth and life. He wished that time will stop when he was there, that it would not end.

But he wouldn't be Jiang Cheng if life does not throw him a rock after his beautiful year. The indoctrination camp happened, he heard about the burning of CR and the disappearance of the first jade, his mind was gripped by fear and worry for his Alpha. Not just that but their sword was taken and they were forced to go to the Xuanwu cave where those detestable Wens have closed the entrance for them to defend themselves against that monster.

Thankfully because of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji they were able to get out, however it came with the sacrifice of leaving the two inside the dreadful cave, injured and alone. He did not have any choice but to run back towards his home to ask for help but without his sword he had to walk the long mile to ask for the help of his father.

On the way due to his bruised and weak body, the sealing slipped and an intense bout of heat suddenly crushed into him. Years of suppression coming to him at once that even though it was a small crack he felt like it was his first heat or worse. He had to double back in pain and clutch at his stomach, however his stubbornness wins out.

He painfully gritted his teeth as he crawled onwards. Beads of perspiration dripping against his temple and his body alight in fire. His mind was getting dizzy with the heat but he trudged on. He doesn't remember much how he managed to come back to Yunmeng a few days later but in his delirious state he remembered a soothing touch and a sweet scent that seemed to envelope and protect him.

He doesn't remember who that man was that helped him but he was grateful nonetheless.

Jiang Yanli found his dirty self almost crawling through the gates of their sect and she hurriedly brought him to the healers and on the way he was met by their Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian, while his mother fussed about him he could see his father looking for a certain someone.

With his hoarse voice he muttered out "Xuanwu cave, Wei Ying and Lan Wangji... trapped, help them." He muttered out before loosing consciousness. He awakens a few hours after, his soul's seal back up and his tired body wasn't ready but his mind is.

He saw his father marching outside the healer's office with his scowling mother who was glaring daggers at the latter. His mind traitorously thought that his father was so worried for him that he was restlessly waiting for him to wake up but the reality was never that.

Instead he was there to wait for him to wake up and guide their disciples to rescue Wei Wuxian. Here he was, tired and battered from the arduous journey, traveling the entire way while he was burning in his heat yet his father showed him no amount of worry instead it was WWX who was reflected in his father's eyes.

And while it hurt, he was used to it so ignoring his mother's tirade and shouting asking her husband who his son was, he simply nodded his head and asked when they were leaving.

After that debacle came the marching of the Wen soldiers headed by Wen Chao's bitch and the core melting hand, Wen Zhuliu. He wonder how much the fates wanted to take from him, his home rose in flames and he felt his mother's last hug. A soft murmur of her scent reaching him as she tied him up and Wei Wuxian away.

He saw his mother and father's corpse, their hands so far away even in death and Jiang Cheng wanted to shout at the world. Why are they doing this to him? What sins did he commit in his previous life that such fate was laid out from him.

The day he lost the seal on his body was the same day he lost the golden core that kept him warm all those years ago. The burning feeling was something that will be forever be seared in his mind, as well as the grating laughter of Wen Chao.

He thought that was it. What was there more to do, his mother and father dead. His siblings hiding for their life and he... he was broken, he could never be the sect leader he worked for all his life. A person weaker than a normal human. He was an omega with no protection from his cultivation.

But his Shixiong had given him a new lease in life. A promise that made the hope blossomed in his heart again. He climbed that mountain with all the fight and hope left in his heart. He was gifted a new core from Baoshen Sanren.

The thrumming warmth of the core felt both foreign and familiar but he paid it no mind.

No, his mind is only filled with one thing. Revenge.

The war was hard and painful. Being a young, no, youngest sect leader was hard but he persevered. His sister needed him and his shixiong is missing. While his heart, Lan Xichen, the angel that he is has also put a dagger in his heart.

There he stood with another omega at his side. He heard that the man had saved the first jade and Lan Xichen was grateful for the man enough to be seen as his trusted aid.

He seethed in jealousy but they were in the war and such feelings are unnecessary. But the hatred for that small smiling man was never going away. Despite the seals from before being destroyed he resealed his nature to compensate for the war but the raging omega inside him was still present and he drunk his pain away.

A man the same as him. Full of rage for the Wens and with the same uncouth mouth and straightforward words became his leaning shoulder. An alpha not his own but kind enough than his exterior brute actions belied.

A righteous man that became his guiding person during the war. Giving him instruction and teaching him war tactics while drinking wine with him. His friend simply declined the invitation for alcohol and instead drank tea with that smiling man.

His heart hurt, and he used that to fuel the rage building inside him. Propelling him to kill and hack all Wens that came his way.

--

His Shixiong was back. His smell was repulsive even with his weakened nose but that didn't matter. The tendrils of death following him was concerning but if it meant another helping hand with the war, then it doesn't matter.

He watched with disgusting fascination how Wei Wuxian led Wen Chao into such pitying state. His heart calming a little at one of the revenge being fulfilled before his eyes.

The war was raging and he felt alive in the midst of it. His anger finally having an outlet to let it out. Then the war was over, the feats of Nie MingJue, Lan Xichen and Meng Yao, now Jin Guangyao, was sang towards the cultivation world. Dubbing them the venerated triad, the people who killed Wen Ruohan.

A night of feasting was allowed as they all cried and cheered, relief flooding their hearts. Finally the war was over. Peace should rein in the land.

--

In the tents he saw the three friends talking to themselves, and JC felt that isolation again. Here he was one of the younger leaders but he was excluded from the group. His average-ness separating him from them who was born exceptional. Even Jin Guangyao who was an omega was being praised, and Wei Wuxian who was using Demonic Cultivation was exalted as one of the reason the war was won.

That same feeling of self deprecation and jealousy was building in his heart. There he was, working frantically to train new soldiers, who hidden with all his might what he really was so he can fight along these people, was ignored.

His views that omegas are nothing shattered by that man beside his Alpha.

He laughed bitterly to himself. Refusing to let the stinging pain in his eyes to go down. He turned his back towards them to drink alone in his tent when he heard his name being called by Nie Mingjue.

He turned around to see the burly man walk his way towards him, clasping his shoulders and offering him a cup. "You did well Jiang Cheng. Come let's toast to our victory." The older man said, and a small smile broke out from his lips. Even now, this man was holding him up.

He felt guilty but somewhere in his heart he wished that this man was his own fate. He believed that at least with the older Alpha he wouldn't feel that he wasn't worthy of him unlike with Lan Xichen. More so now that he could see how the smaller omega and his mate looked together.

The older man dragged him to his friends complaining how A-Yao and Xichen refused to drink with him.

Jiang Cheng grit his teeth and focused his eyes on Mingjue as his heart throb painfully the nearer he got to the other pair.

He wanted to run, he really did but he wouldn't embarrass Mingjue by declining his invitation. Not when he's the only one who truly notice him.

"Da-ge, it seems like you have a guest." Jin Guangyao said with that sickly smile plastered on his face, when they approached them. Jiang Cheng was eternally grateful that he was known for his always scowling face that it's not out of character that he is frowning at this fake man.

He chanced a glance at LXC to see him looking at him with an unreadable expression. He was also smiling but it seems like it wasn't reaching his eyes. Is he angry? JC's inside turned cold. Of course, only him could make the kindest man to dislike him.

He wasn't the pissy but a bit shy and bashful youth he once met after all, he was aware of the rumors of his apparent violence and blood thirst in the war and his ever scowling face would deter most people from coming near. But to find your soul mate looking at you like that, JC wished that the ground would open up and swallow him whole.

"A-yao, Xichen, I asked Wanyin to accompany me to drink since both of you persist on drinking that bland tea." He said, taking a swig right after and Jiang Cheng humored him and took one as well, drinking to the bottom.

The older man laughed and pointed at him, "Now that is how you drink." He said smirking, patting the man on the back and Jiang Cheng made sure not to wince at the pressure. He wanted to groan when the man kept pouring drink after drink to him. His dumb self just took it, he wanted to nurse his broken heart so forgive him, the sweet tone of Jin Guangyao calling Lan Xichen "Er-ge" was grating to his ears.

After the seventh cup Xichen was looking at him worriedly and said "Wanyin, I think you should slow down on the alcohol. You don't need to humor Da-ge." He said and Jiang Cheng was both happy that he still uses his name to call him and angry that he's taking away his means of coping right now.

Maybe he's a bit drunk and petulant but he dodges Xichen's approaching hand and dives at Mingjue's broad back to hide and gulp his eight glass.

"No." was all he said as he glared daggers at the man, maybe his omega wasn't happy with his alpha, seeing how close another omega was to him while Lan Xichen was not paying him any attention.

Nie Mingjue laughed at the scene in front of him, helping Jiang Cheng to hide. "Don't ruin our fun Xichen, we aren't stopping you and A-yao from drinking that tea."

Jiang Cheng cannot see anything from where he was standing, Mingjue's back was so broad and muscled that he felt like he wanted to bury his face on it. And so he did, hugging the man from his back and face planting his face on it. Relishing at the hard muscles squishing his face.

A small growl was heard along with the rambunctious laugh of the man he was hiding at, that he thought he was only hearing things.

"Wanyin," He heard Xichen say and a shiver ran down his spine when he heard that. It was so cold and underlying with anger that he couldn't help but whimper.

"Get off Da-ge's back you're bothering him." He heard him say and his heart broke, never had he heard the man scold anyone with such cold voice before. It made him detach from Nie Mingjue and take a few step backward, some sense coming back to him and sobering him up.

Mingjue started to complain but Xichen just held him back telling him that he had a lot of drinks and they were still injured technically so with his signature Lan arm strength he stirred Nie Mingjue away from Jiang Cheng and they went to their tent with Jin Guangyao following behind them.

Jiang Cheng's heart hurt, his alpha found him so revolting that he's even taking his friend away from him. They probably saw him lowly of their triad and he was crossing his line. JC bit back the calling whine from deep his throat and run away from there.

Finding his wayward Shixiong and that scent of death, he welcomed the anger and jabs that were thrown away at each other until his sister finds them there and feed them her soup. Jiang Cheng let the warmth of the soup fill him, wishing to chase away the coldness of rejection that he's feeling.

That incident had been buried in the farthest of his mind once they came back to the dilapidated Lotus Pier. Jiang Cheng took a lungful of air, exhaling it slowly as he refused to let the tears fall. He stood straight, while hiding his grief he bark out the first order, to bury their deceased and hold them the funeral they deserve to enter the cycle.

Rebuilding Lotus Pier and strengthening Yunmeng proved to be the distraction needed by JC to forget his grief and broken heart. It allowed him to avoid Lan Xichen and the other triad and focus on his people and his alarmingly deteriorating Shixiong.

But despite how he tries, their communication suck and it always ends up with them in a shouting match or in a tangled mess of fist. Jiang Cheng was tired, his body and mind are tired, his heart is in pieces. He just wanted to curl up in himself and wail. To grieve and let his tears flow as they should.

But life is not as ideal. He once dreamed of leading Lotus Pier to greatness, not bound by his gender and free with a certain Lan as his husband and his brother beside him as he promised them to be the Twin Prides to the Twin Jades.

Except his Shixiong abandoned him just like all the people in his life. In a conference headed by that slimy Jin Guangshan and his equally slimy son Jin Guanyao – who cannot stop rubbing elbows with Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue – Wei Wuxian barged in on the meeting accusing the Jin Leader of inhumane condition for the remaining Wens.

After that display, Wei Wuxian left him with the task of defending for him.

Him, a vulnerable young man, a beta in disguise, in the sea of vicious Alpha cultivators waiting for him to slip up so they could claim his sect. If he wasn't himself, full of hatred and anger then he would have been eaten long ago.

Instead now he had to lower his head to this disgusting man just so he would let his shixiong's comment slip. He was clearly wishing to get the stygian seal and swallow Lotus Pier whole, and with his decimated sect and empty pockets he has nothing against these people when it was his sect who lost the most.

He marches on to the Burial mountain where he found Wei Wuxian farming with the Wens and just as his brother said, this people are not cultivators. However they are still Wens and it hurts that Wei Ying's hero complex once again chose to save other people and not him who was already struggling to come up, off the waters threatening to drag him down.

His omega was warring again why another alpha in its link was rejecting them.

There were shouting again and Jiang Cheng could see the insanity bleeding from Wei Wuxian. This Demonic Cultivation is destroying his brother and he wanted to stop it. He begged him to come back to make him realize what this was doing to him and what an abomination he did to Wen Ning.

He had doomed the poor man to never enter the reincarnation cycle. But he was not open to his words and just told him to severe his ties to the Yunmeng Jiang Sect if it was causing Jiang Cheng all this trouble. The younger man could only gape.

"Are you really throwing away your link to our sect for these Wen dogs? Have you forgotten what they've done?!" He shouted at him, his voice breaking at the thought that he was being left again. That no one was ever going to look at him and choose him.

The older man just have that dejected look in his eyes, those red orbs hardening at his words. "They are innocent. These people are civilians I cannot abandon them, not with Jin Guangshan torturing and killing them." He said, something in his eyes and words are refusing to come out. The reason that he knows this man have why he chose to protect this people.

Sure Wen Ning and Wen Qing helped them before but they also didn't do anything to stop their uncle. They were guilty by association. The Wens also didn't care if you were a civilian or cultivator when they killed people so why should the same courtesy not be applied to them?

"Just, just leave. I will leave Yunmeng Jiang Sect, so the other Sect won't use me to bring you down." Wei Wuxian told him and he let out a defeated sigh. There was nothing he could do to bring back his Shixiong.

"If you wish to leave the sect then we will hold a battle. However," Jiang Cheng bit his lips, he doesn't want to lose people he love anymore, he felt like a failure, as a sect leader, a brother and even an omega. Maybe if he was also a weak creature like these people, he will be loved and protected?

His pride won't allow that though. That's why he suppressed his own gender. And he swallowed down the cries that wanted to come out of his mouth. To beg his wayward brother to come back to his side.

"Allow me to do something before that. If it fails then, then I will accept your defection and we will battle here." He told him and Wei Wuxian was unsure what his shidi wanted but he was tired as well. His face looked gaunt and his eye bags are a dark abyss. Jiang Cheng felt worried for him.

And that's why he was in Qinghe right now, asking for an audience with the Nie Leader. Jiang Cheng waited patiently for the Mingjue to arrive only to be surprised to see Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao with Nie Mingjue when he received him. His eyes automatically went to his Alpha, despite everything this man would not leave his mind and heart.

Despite the pain that it cause just to see him with his preferred omega other than him, he did not look away. Still he ignored the man's surprised expression and turned his attention to Nie Mingjue.

He stood up and bowed at him, it was mortifying now that there were going to be other witnesses to his begging but he had swallowed his pride for this and maybe, just maybe Lan Xichen, the righteous man that he is will also see his plight.

"Wanyin what are you doing here." Mingjue said, he wanted to let Xichen and A-Yao to leave but they have taken the seat as well.

"Chifeng-zun, Zewu-jun and Lianfang-zun, my apologies for disturbing your meeting." He said first bowing his head once more. The older Nie brushed off his apology and simply asked him to call him by his name. They were after all an ally in the war and Nie Mingjue was fond of this little kitten whose talents were overshadowed and ignored by many people.

Jiang Cheng wanted to smile at that but he schooled his face to remain neutral. He went straight to the point knowing that the man in front of him hated wasting his time.

"I ask for your help to support my Shixiong and the Wen remnants. I went there and saw myself that they were not cultivators as Jin Guangshan says but mere farmers and civilians who have never touched any swords." He said, his periphery caught Jin Guangyao freezing at the mention of his father.

Something ticked in the Nie Sect Leader and he scowled at young man in front of him. He knew of Jiang Cheng's sensibilities and despite his scowling visage the young man knows how to handle politics. But he clearly doesn't know NMJ, who hated with any Wens with a passion.

"Am I hearing it right or did you just asked me to help out some Wen dogs? I thought you're better than that Wanyin." Jiang Cheng bit the inside of his cheek at the scolding and disappointed tone of the older man. His body recognizing that it had failed once again and shame filled his body.

"They are innocent, they even have a toddler with them and elderly. Are we that cruel to forsake them when they probably cannot defect against Wen Ruohan as well?" he reasoned out. Never had he thought that he would defend a Wen like this but for his brother he would.

And Mingjue sensed that. "Is it really for them that you're lowering yourself for or for your shixiong who had abandoned you for the same people who stood by when Lotus Pier were burning?" Mingjue told him matter-of-fact and Jiang Cheng's face colored in embarrassment at being read like that.

"Yes it is so, but what I said is also the truth. They were innocent people. Civilians who couldn't even hurt a fly even if they wanted to." He confessed. His fist gripping at his robes waiting for the verdict when Nie Mingjue stayed silent. He slyly glances at Lan Xichen watching what he would do. Maybe even if the Nie Mingjue rejects him, Lan Xichen would see help him.

And he looked like he was contemplating it, only for Jin Guangyao to lean into him and whisper in his ears. Jiang Cheng almost sees red at the blatant closeness of the omega. They are known alpha and omega and for them to appear so close, he thought that his broken heart was already shattered before but it seemed like there were still some shards there to smash when he saw Xichen nod at whatever was said to him and looked at him in regret and told him that it was impossible.

"They are guilty by association. Smaller sects will see this as favoring the Wens because of Wei Wuxian and we cannot give them the courtesy of being protected when they did nothing when ours were killed." He explained and while it was understandable Jiang Cheng had this hatred in his heart that he only thought like that because that snake probably said something.

He was already being wrapped around the fingers of that omega. Does he need to let him know what he was so he would listen to him? No, that is one thing that Jiang Cheng would bring to his grave. Besides, who cares if he was an omega, being his soul mate doesn't mean that Lan Xichen will choose him. After all who does?

"Let me see them." Nie Mingjue said and JC and the other two whipped their head so fast they must have gotten whiplash.

Hope rose in the young man's heart. "Yes, please and you will see that they are not a threat." He said not even registering the smile and hopeful eyes he was showing them. It felt like a piece of arrow was taken off his heart.

The older Nie couldn't stop the smirk from his lips as he saw his two friends look at him in astonishment. He may hate the Wens but he was not an evil man to lower himself to killing innocent people.

Also he dislike Jin Guangyao's blatant manipulation of his friend in front of him. Also, he pities the young man in front of him. A beta fighting his way against alpha's like him and building his decimated sect, leaving him with no one but his sister and brother. If it was Nie Huisang who was in trouble he would also do anything to save him.

"However, it would be only if Wei Wuxian will destroy the Stygian Tiger Amulet in front of me." He set the deal and Jiang Cheng, manners be damned held his hand and thanked him profusely. It was out of character but he doesn't care, he was going to save his Shixiong!

In his periphery he saw something flash in Lan Xichen's eyes when he let go of Nie Minjue's hand but he must've just be seeing things. He heard Xichen and Meng Yao's "Da-ge," before he was escorted by the older man out and promised to come see Wei Wuxian after the next conference.

Jiang Cheng was vibrating in happiness that he decided to ignore the pain in his chest at the expressed disapproval of Lan Xichen towards Mingjue's help to him. He must be thinking that he was corrupting his friend but he doesn't care. He needed his Shixiong, he can't do this alone.

The conference happened but there was no sign of the Nie Sect Leader. A missive has been sent that he was experiencing a Qi deviation and could not attend the conference despite his wishes. Jiang Cheng's heart sank at hearing that. He worried his lips, biting it enough to produce blood.

As of now the people were looking at him but they can't say anything about the Yiling Patriarch since the Nie's have expressed their desire to help the Wens publicly. But until their deal is done he cannot bring back his Shixiong home.

He found Lan Xichen at the pavilion near his guest room when the first day of conference ended. His heart was beating quickly when the man was clearly waiting for him.

He still looked ethereal. Despite his obvious favor of another omega and his dismissal to his plight, their bond wouldn't allow Jiang Cheng to stop loving this man. You can take his heart away and still it will beat for this man.

But his elation was quickly trampled by the older man's words. "Please stop your deal with Da-ge. You're creating more worries for him and it's not good for his condition now to shelter some Wen when it can trigger his Qi deviation."

Jiang Cheng's mouth slackened, he did not believe Xichen will interfere like this, "The deal is between me and Mingjue, its none of your business Zewu Jun." he answered coldly after recovering. His glare filled with rage and sadness.

He could see it, it was momentary but anger was mirrored in those eyes. He could recognize that emotion quickly. But it was also gone as well, fleeting as the wind as the serene face was back.

"I truly sympathize with your plight Wanyin, but I'm disappointed that you're doing all of this for a person who wouldn't do the same for you." And the chastising way he said that made Jiang Cheng feel like he was being scolded by his father again.

Picking at his insecurities like that, Lan Xichen really is ruthless. Why oh why does his heart still refuse to hate this man? He wanted to whine and whimper. To release distress hormones so this person wouldn't be able to do anything but to care for him and spoil him.

But he wasn't like that, he would die first before doing that. So he stood his ground and leveled him with his famous glare. "Thank you for your advise Zewu Jun, however it doesn't matter if my love isn't returned. It's mine to freely give." He told him. His words not just for Wei Wuxian but to this person as well.
