the blonde continued wiping down the counter as she pretended not to stare at the group of boys sitting a few tables away from the main bar she was behind. when one's head twitched as he began to look back, gyuri avoided all eye contact and turned in an attempt to at least try and cover her face a bit more.
the bell above the main door suddenly jingled, and the girl looked up and let out a silent sigh of relief when she spotted donghyuck.
"hey, fucker."
"what's up, bitch."
grinning at their greetings, the boy took a seat at an open stool and gyuri moved in front of him for more direct conversation. "so, a secret ex, huh?"
the girl rolled her eyes playfully, debating whether she wanted to cut him off or not. "he's irrelevant... just some guy from the past."
"irrelevant my ass. you wouldn't have called me if he was 'irrelevant'." gyuri huffed at his remark, knowing damn well just how right he was.
"where is this guy, anyway?" donghyuck was about to turn and scan the restaurant for any suspicious-looking guys, but the blonde gripped his hand to stop him. "he's over there looking at you, don't turn around."
"why? afraid he might fall in love with me?"
she couldn't even laugh; the look the jet-haired boy was sending her held her locked in place. a small shake in her hand grabbed her attention, and gyuri faced back forward to see haechan intensely scanning her features. "yo gyurine, you good? you spaced out for a sec there." the said girl swallowed hard before nodding hesitantly. "y-yeah. i'm good."
that changed the second the boy with jet hair began approaching them.
the girl's grip on haechan's hand tightened, and she was unable to pull her gaze from the boy nearing. though her expression was cold and stoic, hyuck felt the nerve-wracking tremble in her fingertips.
"well well, if it isn't little miss choi gyuri." the boy greeted, lips curling into a smirk that made the bartender sick to her stomach. "it's been a long time."
"not long enough." gyuri looked at the other boys in his group, snarling internally at every familiar face. donghyuck released her hand and pushed himself up to lean on his arm. "and who the hell are you?"
"he's no one—"
"the name's han junseok," he said, reaching a ring-clad hand out to offer a shake. hyuck simply ignored the action, refusing to break eye contact even for a second. he could feel how uncomfortable gyuri was, and it made him upset. "i'm sorry, but what are you doing here?"
junseok's gaze wandered dangerously between the streamers, teeth grazing over his bottom lip as if this entertained him. "this is a public bar, correct? i'm simply here for a drink with my boys."
gyuri couldn't hold back a scoff, utterly disgusted with how at ease he seemed. what a fake. "sir, if you aren't going to order anything, i'll have to ask you to le—"
"my usual. i'm sure you remember, angel."
something about the nickname sparked a dark, dreadful memory in the girl and she suddenly felt weak. swallowing hard, gyuri found herself grabbing a glass from under the counter and filling it with rum. haechan could only watch, brows drawn as he tried to figure out how they knew each other. is he the ex she messaged me about?
as the blonde handed the drink over, junseok's fingers grazed over her own and gyuri froze. "thanks, angel. and by the way, the blonde looks magnificent on you." he sent her a wink and the girl had to turn away.
she could hear hyuck's voice around her as she made her way towards the back room, but it all felt muffled. like she was underwater. like she was drowning.
gyuri suddenly found herself in the break room, gasping for breath as her eyes welled with tears. "hey, hey, gyuri, calm down." she felt two hands on her shoulders and was very surprised to see jeno through her blurred vision.
"w-what...?" she tried, her words strained and breathless due to the crushing feeling in her chest. "just take a deep breath, alright? hold it for a few seconds then exhale. can you do that for me?" with her own hands gripping his tightly, gyuri followed the boy's instructions. after a few tries, breathing got easier.
"how did you...? why are you here?"
jeno chuckled comfortingly. "i have experience when it comes to handling panic attacks." he gave her a little pat on the head before
continuing. "haechan texted me. he looked up the guys you served earlier and apparently, they're the ones who eunchae used to hurt him and you... and jaem."
"so you guys do the dirty work, huh? put me in, coach. they won't get away for hurting my favorite dongsaeng." the blonde tried to joke, and even though it wasn't funny, jeno smiled.
"why don't you stay back here for a few minutes, alright? calm down some more. hendery's coming too."
a small smile unknowingly moved across the girl's lips, but it passed when jeno's tone sank in. "wait, why do you sound like you're about to go to war?"
the boy stopped when he reached the door, hand freezing on the knob as he glanced back at the blonde. "just stay here and don't come out. i'll be back soon."
