YOU WERE FAR TOO DOWN THE LINE OF BREAKING— the tipping point was where you'd situated yourself, one more push and you'll crumble. time was never-ending, so was the mark that came to bear itself down your nimble skin. time was never-ending, so was the meager speck that came to decide of your destiny with your significant other.

your expression was that of confusion whenever your gaze lingered for more than a second at the symbol, why is it an infinity? in a world where everything revolved around time, the same time humans came to create and make existence of, why exactly was yours infinite?

you can't help but think that maybe you were alone after all, that you'd been casted as someone with no soulmate, and for you-- well, that was fine.  in a world where soulmates mattered the most, where they defined the bonds you have with another person, perhaps not having to trouble yourself with one wouldn't be so bad.

yet the moment you'd pierced your eyes at his, everything went black. why was his an infinity too? you wondered. it was eating you up inside, more than you would have hoped so. was he your soulmate? or did he really have a proper mark, just at a different place?

you promised yourself you wouldn't interfere any further, but with the way your footsteps heavily resonated itself throughout, you thought otherwise. perhaps you were desperate for a soulmate after all.

your feet hastily thrashed against the old plaftform of the station, hands hopelessly reaching out for the door. but before you could have done so, the doors of the train shut off, not allowing entrance any further. to think you were so close to catching him.

you watched as the train rode off, a disheartened feeling settling down the pit of your stomach. you hadn't know why you were so dejected, when there was no guarantee he was your soulmate; you only happened to have glanced at the mark on his neck briefly.

yet you felt it-- a loud beating throb.

somehow keeping the incident etched onto your brain, fate seemed to have held onto it tightly too.

two weeks. it didn't seem so long but for you, it felt like forever. your hope was beginning to dissipate, so was your determination in finding him. the world was a vast place, what were the chances of the two of you ever meeting again?

apparently, they were high.

carelessly dozing off the lecture, a pen in your left hand, head on the other, you felt a presence come beside you. they asked if the seat beside you was taken, to which you refused and you felt them pull the seat beside you; no more words were exchanged.

as you tried to listen to the presentation your professor had provided, you began to drift off once again to the incident that happened two weeks back. you felt hopeless, that much was obvious. you heaved a small sigh, meekly glancing at the person who came to sit beside you.

and your mouth went agape.

similar features to the one at the station, jet black hair, slight lazy eyes and the mark-- the infinite mark was there, just below his neck. you stared for a couple of seconds, blinking, and blinking, and blinking. you could not just believe he appeared again, in front of your eyes.

not noticing you were staring for far too long, the person hummed gently, halting his note taking and looking at you with his brow raised, “what?” he'd asked. you pulled back, coughing gently and finding the staring embarrassing, “sorry about that.” was all that came out of your mouth.

though what really desired to come out was a pile of questions, questions  ask about his mark, how he came to deal with the people who asked about it, what he thought of it, and the likes-- all were kept buried inside your curious gaze.

“are you gonna ask about my mark?” he beat you to it. “yeah-- about that. i am, actually.”

you felt him sigh, “it's my soulmate mark, the one beneath my neck.” he'd said plainly, as if used to the constant questioning. he never faced you, certain the conversation ended there. but you needed questions, you wanted questions.

so you opened your mouth to pry in again: “i have the same mark.

“what?”

his head now turned onto you, eyes wide at the sudden statement. his gulp urged you to repeat, and so you did, allowing what he thought he heard wrong come true. “show me.” he whispered, careful not to disturb the lecture.

you had complied, lifting your sleeves up and allowing him to take a peek at the mark that was carved there. an infinity sign, much like his. though yours was at your wrist, he was almost fairly certain.

after all, he'd heard the beating too.

“you hear that, right?”

“yeah, i do.” you nodded. the two of you stared at each other for a couple of seconds, taking in the information that was gathered. he was your soulmate, you were his.

in a world where soulmates existed and their meeting is decided by the mark around the parts on their body— yours was nonexistent, with only an infinity embedded into your wrist.

perhaps you may have found your soulmate, after all.

two.

“is it a coincidence?”

“that it's an infinity sign? no, i don't think so.”

“so we're not normal, yes?”

“could be.” he shrugged, taking sip of the black coffee. as he sat in front of you, in a trance about the situation on hand, you couldn't help but stare at his features.

you hadn't noticed how attractive he really was because of the sheer panic earlier, he dressed well, looked amazing too.

“i've thought about this theory before,” you started, bringing his attention to you.

“what theory?”

“you've heard of people seeing their soulmates' past lives, correct?” he nodded, “and technically a lot of people believe that in our past lives, once we die, these marks appear in our bodies as a reminder that we're not to go astray from our partner.”

“but what if the both of us were in a constant loop of you know... dying and reincarnating?

“constant loop of what now?”

“like... after we died in our past lives, we got these marks and the during the following lives, the both of us again keep on dying again, and eventually, we receive an infinity mark because the marks couldn't keep up anymore, and we kept on losing each other. does that make any sense?”

“well, kind of.” he shrugged, taking another sip of the coffee, “what's weird is, that i've never seen memories of your past life before. people who i'm close with say they experience taking a glimpse at their soulmate's lives through their dreams.”

you snapped a finger, “exactly! what if we kept on reincarnating that we have no control of the memories because they're all too much?”

he hummed, pleased with your answer. “makes sense.”

“one thing is certain though—” he glanced at the throbbing sensation your mark had provided, it's glowing light visible enough for the two of you to stare in awe. “we really are soulmates.”

the both of you continued to stare at it until the sensation dissipated, and you were left with the same black infinity mark. you lifted your head up the same time he lifted his, allowing you to make contact with his eyes.

and for a couple of seconds, your breathe hitched. god, was this really your soulmate?

“well—” he broke the staring off first, coughing abruptly and scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. he hoped you didn't notice how much of a mess his legs were bouncing beneath the table. it was a common habit of his whenever he got nervous.

“since we're soulmates it'd make sense if we knew each others name.”

“y-yeah, totally. mine's y/n, yours?”

“megumi. megumi fushiguro.”

three.

in a world where soulmates matter the most, where they define your relationship with your significant other through the mark that appears on any part of your body, yours was as an infinity.

19:12:1:6.

in nineteen years, twelve months, day one, and six seconds, you were destined to meet your soulmate.

you weren't certain if the counting was accurate, given the fact that you took a wild guess at the time when you first landed your eyes at his mark.

but it was enough, knowing you've met him.

“megumi, let's watch a movie and the person who gets scared treats the other, watcha say?”

“ha? that's a stupid idea, no way.”

you, who was comfortably splayed across the couch of his dorm, pouted in disappointment. it was december fifteenth, a small vacation was imposed upon your university for christmas will arrive.

however, megumi didn't seem keen on going back to his hometown anytime soon, neither were you. you lazily laid your feet on his lap, chewing on the chips with the pout still visible on your face.

the both of you had grown closer, much to your surprise.

“why not?” you urged, raising your upper body up and feeding him a chip. megumi gladly took it, his lip briefly brushing against your finger. “i hate watching movies.” he said.

“are you just scared?” you teased with a small smirk. megumi scoffed, rolling his eyes and patting the feet that were situated at his lap. “they bore me.” he said plainly. you mouth formed a small 'o', letting go of the topic but keeping in mind that maybe he was scared of horror movies.

“hmm... well, what do you think about us then?”

“huh? what do you mean?” megumi turned to face you, confused.

“what do you think about us?” you repeated.

megumi titled his head, why would you go from movies to status real quick?

“we're... friends?”

you sighed gently, prying your feet off of his lap and sitting down properly, “you really only think of me as a friend? i mean, we're soulmates, you know!”

megumi took the hint and he went silent for a couple of seconds. the both of you were soulmates, that much was certain. whenever the two of you made contact, he'd feel the throbbing on the mark on his neck, so did you.

the both of you were soulmates, yet why was he so doubtful?

five seconds, ten, thirty, and eventually a minute passed. you shook your head, “alright, i'm sorry, i must have rushed you.” you quickly apologised as you felt bad. megumi was an uncertain boy, unlike you. though you were aware of the feelings you harboured for him, it seems he was still quite confused about his.

and that was fine, you were there to reassure him.

“megumi?” he hummed. “take my hand.” you reached your hand out, he took it hesitantly.

“i'll wait for you.” you smiled gently. “after all, our marks are infinity, right?” megumi nodded.

“sorry to have rushed you like that,” you squeezed his hand gently, as a form of reassurance. “but i'll stay with you.”

megumi released the breath he was holding. his shoulders visibly relaxed, and he couldn't help but smile back at you too.

in a world where you'll find your soulmate through time, yours was an infinity, and so was his.

whoo! this one was sitting in my drafts for a while, all prepped up for me to publish so i immediately did, just adding a short author's note at the end.

i did not proofread this as i hate proofreading with a burning passion, so please do take this piece of crumb.

i guess this also kinda doubles as angst and fluff? i ran out of time to add more words so sorry if it's a bit lacking! (i try to keep the fanfics at bay with 1k words, making sure not to exceed 2k.)

i don't think i've done a soulmate au before but anyways, this was the au i wanted to do so bad before. there are tons of interesting soulmate au's but i stuck with this one.

anyways, i'm fully back! i might take another break after some time (yes, i am hinting at the future hiatus.) but as of now, do expect regular updates! they will be irregular, though. i'm pretty inconsistent.

tell me what you think of this oneshot as i love hearing your thoughts and opinions!
