The Radical Truth

Y/n's POV

"Hey. Where'd you go?" Jay asked. "I got out of the shower and you were gone."

"Uh, sorry," I say and unhook the leash from Chief's collar. "Chief wanted to take a walk, so I just went on a quick jog. You ready to head out?"

"I'm ready whenever you are," Jay countered.

"All right. Let me get changed and then we can go," I exclaim and make my way into the bedroom. After I got dressed, Jay and I drove down to the district. It was a slow morning since we didn't have a case, but I needed the rest since Jay and I had just gotten back from our honeymoon the night before.

"How were the Swiss Alps?" Kim asked as I took a seat at my desk.

"Good. It was nice getting a break," I reply. "But you know Jay. When he's off work he gets cranky."

"I do not," Jay argued. Both Kim and I glanced up from our computers at the same time and gave Jay the same look. "Okay, so maybe I get a bit cranky." That's when Adam and Platt walked out of the breakroom together, both with mugs in their hands, and I caught part of their conversation which just so happened to be about Adam's father. I had heard through the grapevine that he was retiring soon.

"Years ago, when we were babies working at the 13th, your dad would show up for his shift reciting your stats from your game the night before," Platt told Adam.

"Aww," Jay cooed jokingly.

"Adam went three for four last night with a double and two RBIs," Trudy recited and headed down the stairs to get back to the front desk.

"Well, we should definitely keep doing that," I state.

"Adam went three for four last night with a hoagie and two beers," Jay joked.

"And a sacrifice pickle," Kim added. Both comments caused me to laugh softly, and I shook my head before returning to my work. That night, Jay and I were back at our apartment, relaxing a bit since work had gotten out early. And by relaxing, I meant that we were making out on the couch. I was sitting on top of Jay's lap, and our lips were moving in sync with each other. Our honeymoon was very physical, and I guess the two of us hadn't moved past that phase since whenever we had a free moment, it was spent kissing.

"Mmm," Jay hummed against my lips. "I could get used to this."

"Yeah? Me too," I agree and attach my lips to his again. Just before things could get more heated, my phone dinged from where it was sitting on the coffee table. I groaned and pulled myself away from Jay, reaching over to grab the device. Upon looking at the screen, I frowned.

"What is it?" Jay asked.

"It was from Adam. His dad's missing. I guess it's our new case," I say.

"Well, after you Mrs. Halstead," Jay spoke.

I smiled at the name. "Thank you, Mr. Halstead." And with that, the two of us got off of the couch and headed out to the address Adam had sent me. Once we arrived at the scene, I made a beeline for Adam and embraced him tightly. "Hey. How you holding up?"

"I'm uh, I'm doing okay, all things considered," Adam confessed. "Thanks for coming over you guys. I know it's late and you were probably busy."

"Adam, it's your dad. And because he's your family, he's also our family. Besides, Jay and I weren't doing anything that important," I admit.

Jay scoffed lightly. "Um, says you. I was enjoying myself."

"I didn't say I wasn't enjoying myself," I counter. "I was just saying that this was more important."

"All right. Everybody, listen to me. The last thing Bob Ruzek needs is his face on the evening news. That's how people get hurt. Send patrol away. We're working this as a 99 Confidential. Only keep OCD in the loop. Where are we?" Voight questioned as him, Kevin, and Kim joined us.

"Okay. We've got a struggle inside the house. There's blood in the kitchen which leads to the backdoor," Kim started.

"It's pretty clear my father left in a hurry and it wasn't his idea to do so," Adam added. "I mean, his car is here. The TV was on, and he left his keys, his wallet, service revolver, and his phone, which I just started going through. The password was his badge number. It's all just normal stuff. I mean, here I am texting him about the retirement party. And then there's...." Adam trailed off. Jay glanced over Adam's shoulder and looked at the phone, frowning when he saw the screen.

"Uh, it says, Tuesday, 6:13, You don't deliver, it's over," Jay read aloud. "It's a restricted number."

"All right, any idea who might send something like that to your old man?" Voight asked Adam.

Adam shook his head as Hailey exited the house. "No."

"The tech said that the footprints and the blood leading to the back door were made by somebody wearing socks," Hailey told us.

"So if this is what it seems, somebody grabbed him. They didn't even give him a chance to put his shoes on. All right, keep canvassing this block. Find some cameras. Scrape together enough to get a BOLO out on that car," Voight ordered.

......................................

"We've got a Chicago cop missing 12 hours. Tell me something good," Voight demanded.

"We've got a trap-and-trace on Officer's Ruzek's phone, but so far, nothing," Hailey spoke.

"Okay. What's the latest on the scrub of his police work?" Voight quizzed.

"I'm into it, Sarge. It's just not a lot of meat on the bone," Kim revealed.

"Okay, so, Sarge, this is the claim territory of Los Tiranos, the Hispanic gang that's holding down Bob Ruzek," Kevin stated and gestured to the large map pinned to the bulletin board.

"So these guys are an umbrella gang, cartel-connected. They've got hundreds of foot soldiers, dozens of cliques, each one is a silo," Hailey informed us. "It's gonna take some time to put a face to this."

"Right, so they occupy the Lower West Side, the South Loop, Marshall Square, but the heart of it happens right here in Pilsen," Kevin shared.

"So we've got reason to believe these guys know what they're talking about. I mean, Los Tiranos was running unchecked for a long time, but the last couple months, they've taken some hits. CPDs punched them in the face a few times. Hit a couple of their stash houses and a couple bank accounts," Hailey added.

"We're thinking that there has to be an informant on the inside," Kevin finished as Jay entered the bullpen and handed a file to Adam.

"I just got the bloodwork back from the scene. So some of the blood definitely belongs to Officer Ruzek, but the good news is most of it belongs to someone else, and we got a hit on CODIS," Jay declared and hung a picture on the white board. "This is Hector Alvaro Santiago, date of birth 03/30/88. He's in the gang database. He's a known member of Los Tiranos. He's got an LKA in Pilsen. 539 South Allport."

"Nice work. Let's move," Voight said. At the address, we all gathered on the front porch, and once we were all ready, Andre readied the ram.

"Chicago PD!" Andre shouted and busted the door down to let us all inside. There we found a woman hovering over a man's bloody body, trying to keep him alive. The thing was, no one else was in the house, and Hector would not answer any of our questions. To make matters even worse, Hector died, so we had to bring Elena, the woman from the house, in for questioning. However, Elena didn't know anything. She didn't even know that Hector was in a gang. Adam was then sent a second video of his father, and Bob said that we needed to find the name of Merlin, a snitch in the gang that worked for the DA.

"Merlin's work has made one man's life a living hell. His name is Lucas Barela. Date of birth: 11/08/71. Barela's the juice man of the gang. His arm of the business is to launder money by issuing cash loans to desperate people at high interest rates. It was Barela's money houses that were hit by the cops, Barela's bank accounts that were frozen. We can thank Merlin for that. So the task force has wiretaps up, and we know that Barela's bosses have given him one more chance to get his house in order, or he's dead," Hailey explained.

"Sarge, the grand jury transcripts you had me pull for the scrub, the guy who died, Hector Santiago, his cousin is Barela. They were tight," Kim exclaimed.

"Hold on. Santiago's girlfriend told me she used to drop him off at some warehouse for work on her way to, uh, Arden Family Health," Adam brought up.

"Arden Family Health is on Bishop and 21st in Pilsen. So why don't we run all the warehouses between the clinic and Santiago's house?" I suggest.

"Yeah. 19th and Aberdeen. It closed three years ago. Barela liquidated it," Andre announced.

"Barela's parents owned it before it went under. The name's still on the deed," Kim confirmed.

"Strap up. Go hit it," Voight said. At the warehouse, we found Bob alive and only slightly injured. We also found Barela, but he escaped in a civilian car and was now in the wind. That afternoon, all of us were sitting in the bullpen at our desks, trying to find where Barela could have gone. Adam and Voight were talking in the office, and I didn't pay much attention until things got a bit more heated between the two.

"He was a dog cop!" Voight shouted, to which all of us glanced up from our work. We all shared uneasy looks, but chose to ignore the argument seeing as it didn't concern us. Finally, once the two had settled down, they joined us in the bullpen. "All right. What did we hear from our CIs?"

"The vehicle Barela stole? Patrol found it. It was torched," Andre responded.

"Right. Safehouses, stash houses. Barela's on the run. He's gotta be somewhere," Voight spoke.

"I might have something. This is the last piece from the scrub I did on Bob Ruzek's activity. This is the data from the chip from his squad car. Now every single one of his patrol stops can be justified as an on-duty call, all except for this one. 2451 South May. It's in Pilsen. In the heart of Los Tiranos. Bob Ruzek stopped there five times. Never called it in. Always off the books," Kim noted.

"Hold on, you guys. 2451 South May. We've got Barela in that stolen civilian car on a traffic cam, and he was a block away from there headed in that direction," Hailey disclosed.

"Lets move," Voight said. Adam and Kim got to the house first, and when the rest of us got there, Barela was already dead. Adam had shot him. There ended up being a security camera on the property next door, and it caught the whole thing. It was a good shoot.

.........................................

"Uh, hey. You wouldn't mind if I went to Adam's for a bit, would you?" I ask Jay.

"No. Why?" Jay questioned.

"He's going through something right now, and he needs a person he can talk to. I'd like to be that person," I confess.

"All right. Go ahead," Jay said.

"I'll see you in the morning," I tell him and peck his lips quickly. With that, I grabbed my phone and made my way to Adam's apartment. When I got there, I rapped lightly on the door with my knuckles and waited for Adam to open the door.

"Kim, I said I didn't want to- Y/n? What are you doing here?" Adam quizzed.

"Can I come in?" I ask.

"I'd kind of prefer to be alone," Adam admitted.

"I know," I murmur and push past him to get inside. "But you're not just my friend, Adam. You're my family. And I don't leave my family when they need me. Look, I know our relationship hasn't been the smoothest these past few weeks, but I want to change that. There was one point where we were best friends and great partners. I'd like to get back to that. To do that though, we need to talk some things out. I know you're feeling like shit right now, but I also know that you need to tell someone how you're feeling. So, you got any beer? I have a feeling that it's gonna be a long night."

Adam smiled lightly. "Yeah. I've got some in the fridge."

"Great. Lets get started," I announce.
