Kakashi came in early the next day to check in on Obito but to his surprise, he found him already awake and ready to leave.
"Where are you going?" Kakashi asks him walking through the door.
"Home. Enough of this hospital business, I don't need people pitying me."
"Pitying? More like making you a hero. Rin told everyone how you fought for her and how brave you were."
"She what?" Obito exclaims angrily. "Why can't she keep her annoying mouth closed for once?" He mutters through gritted teeth.
"So you have made your choice, I see."
"Kakashi.."
"Let's just go home." Kakashi keeps the door open for Obito to walk through. After completing the formalities at the hospital desk, they both drive back home in their respective cars.
"You alright?" Kakashi sees him wincing while getting out of his car in the parking lot of their apartment building. His knuckles still hurt and so did his ears.
"Yes, never better," he grins at him sarcastically.
Coming up to their apartment, Obito spreads out on the couch, stretching.
"That motherfucker hits too hard," Obito sighs, cracking his neck. He looks at Kakashi, and they both burst out laughing.
"What was I thinking?" Obito laughs.
"Yeah, what were you thinking? What are you thinking?" Kakashi joins him on the couch, throwing Obito's legs off the couch to make place for him.
"Sometimes everything feels so easy, sometimes it feels like nothing would be alright again, you know?" Obito says a little sadly.
"Hmm" Kakashi agrees, and they both stare off in the distance for a minute, their attention brought back to the present by Obito's phone buzzing.
"Hey babe," he says instinctively, but Kakashi doesn't miss his eyebrows furrowing.
"No, don't come over, I am tired. I want to rest."
"Oh!" he says and looks at Kakashi.
Slowly walking to the door, he opens it.
"Welcome back!!!!" Rin screams and puts her arms around him. With her were Asuma, Kurenai, Guy, and a few of her friends that he had come to know in recent times. Basically, a party, an unwanted one.
"I thought you deserved a great coming home party, baby. For standing up for me so bravely," she continues in a honeyed voice.
"I was there for barely 12 hours," Obito says, looking at her.
"But it meant a lot to me when you did that. Can't I appreciate my boyfriend?" Giving a fake pout, she looks at him. Giving in, he forces a fake smile, and she plants a kiss on his cheek before moving towards Kakashi to greet him.
Everyone smiles politely at Obito, and Guy tells him about how he should've used the power of his youth to beat Hidan while Asuma made fun of his still somewhat swollen face.
Obito wasn't sure how she had managed to gather everyone in the morning, but after a couple of hours, awkward teasing, and some pizzas later, they all finally left.
Holding Obito's hand, Rin takes him to his bedroom and closes the door behind them. Making him sit on his bed, she sits in his lap, straddling him.
"I am sorry," she says, hugging him.
"What for?"
"For last night. And everything."
Obito takes a minute to answer. He wasn't sure what she was sorry for, he wasn't sure if even she knew what she was sorry for. All the sorrys and love yous felt like empty words.
"I said I am sorry, Obito" she leaves the hug and looks at him as he doesn't answer.
"Yeah," he sighs.
"I promise I will be better, baby. How would I know he would say such things?" She whined.
"No, you wouldn't have known. But there won't be a next time."
That's it, he had said it. Said it finally.
He grimaces, expecting an outburst.
Getting off his lap, she stands up in front of him.
"Just.. what do you mean by that?" Her voice shakes.
"Yeah, I should have taken your cue yesterday, but I don't think I can do this anymore." The words just came out of his mouth, and he felt a ton lighter. It was the truth, he couldn't, and it came out of him, easier than he had expected.
"Are you.. breaking up with me?" She was irate.
"Yes, Rin. Calm down and listen to me for a minute. You know it's not working out between us. Especially since we were back from the break. It doesn't feel natural anymore." He holds her hand and makes her sit next to him.
She keeps staring at him, her face turning slightly red with anger.
"You know that, too. I am not the boyfriend you wanted. I cannot be that person. It is good for the both of us."
"Are you pulling an 'it's not you, it's me' bullshit on me, Obito Uchiha?" She says slowly, her voice still shaking.
"No, I am not. Listen, Rin.." but she cuts him off.
"Then what? You suddenly realized that you like someone else now?" She says, and her face turns into an expression of a sudden realization ironically.
"It's Y/N, isn't it?"
Obito's face softens as soon as he hears your name, but it was more than that.
"So I am right. It is her!" She gets up, giving a sarcastic laugh.
"You are breaking up with me, for her. Good luck with that" she says with a smug smile on her face.
"It's not the only reason, and why are you saying it like that?" He didn't understand what she meant, and her behavior was creeping him out.
"I was so stupid to not see it. Of course, you had something going on between you, all you talked about was that bitch back then. Oh Y/N this, Y/N that!"
"Don't talk about her like that!" Obito snaps. Rin was squeaking like a maniac, and he was not going to have it.
"And I was so stupid, you hit him last night because he said shit about that slut, not me."
"Stop calling her names, right now!" He folds his hands close to his chest, trying hard not to raise his voice.
"And why should I? You were MY boyfriend, what gives her the right to occupy your mind all the fucking time? You always went after me, always loved me, Obito! ME!"
"Rin, you don't understand, I-"
"You what? Huh? What lies do you have today? I've had it with you and her altogether! I was trying to be nice to her, accept your friendship, inviting her to dinner with us, and what did she do? Made all sad faces, and you ran after her, caught in her trap. I bet she told Hidan not to show up, so she could cry in your arms. God, I feel so stupid. I shouldn't have ever given you a chance!"
Obito's hand was curled up in a fist, his knuckles turning white and hurting. His skin was broken in the areas that had impacted Hidan's face yesterday, and they hurt. But he had one nerve left, and Rin had managed to butcher it.
"Rin, I think you should just leave," he says quietly, his voice devoid of emotions.
"And even so- wait, what?"
Obito doesn't respond.
"You're really going to leave.. me?"
Again silence, Obito was done talking. Rin stares at him, her face getting even darker, tears welling up in her eyes with anger.
"But I thought.. I just.." Tears streak down her face as she stands there staring at him. He feels bad for her for a second but gets over it as soon as she opens her mouth.
"You think... You think you are better than me? Do you know how many guys she went through before you and how many she would after? If you are even on her list?"
Obito had never heard her so bitter, her voice full of hate.
He sighs again, and a small smile appears on his face.
"Being with you made me realize one thing."
Rin looks up to Obito.
"That I have always loved her and that you were just merely a girl I liked. I was feeling bad before doing this, but you disgust me. The only reason you even agreed to date me was that Kakashi rejected you. And I now understand why."
"How dare you feel bad for me? You are lying to yourself. You've always liked ME! You think something just changed? Like that? Do you not remember how you chased ME? How you waited for ME?" She takes a step closer, speaking every word clearly.
"Look at you changing the subject because you know I'm right," Obito smirks. Whatever pity he was feeling for her was out of the window. She didn't respect him as a person, let alone as a partner.
"As I said, she won't even look at you, and anyway, she is leaving. You think you would even stand a chance? Don't come back to me begging once she is done with you. Maybe she'll let you fuck her, the slut that she is!" She smiles, triumphantly.
"Although I should be thankful to you really.." Obito continues as if he hadn't heard a word that she had said. Nobody had made him so mad to make him feel this numb inside. She made Hidan's words feel like a fucking nursery rhyme.
"You opened my eyes. Now whether she gives me a chance or not, I am done with you." Getting up he opens his bedroom door and motions for her to get out.
Staring at him and the door, she seethes in anger.
"You are going to regret this!" She mutters and picks up her purse, stomping out of his room.
"Only one way to find out!" He shouts after her and bangs his door close. Sitting on his bed, he holds his head in his hands. A loud bang on the front door indicates she had left the apartment. His hands were shaking and his head throbbing. Lying down on the bed, he doesn't realize he had fallen asleep until he hears a soft knock on the door.
"Yeah?" He says groggily, trying to figure out where he was and what time of the day it was.
Kakashi peeks in. "You doing okay?" He asks.
Obito smiles, "in a way!"
Entering, Kakashi pulls a chair out and sits on it looking at Obito.
"I umm finally did it. I broke up with her." He says, sitting up, leaning against the wall.
"Yeah, I heard."
Obito looks up in a state of panic.
"Through the walls, they are really thin, you know." He laughs as Obito eases up.
"So what now?" Kakashi continues.
"I don't know. Will wait for a while."
"Time.. is something you don't have much."
"Thank you, oh wise one, Master Oogway!" Obito joins his hands and bends in front of Kakashi.
"Uchiha, I hope you know what you are doing," Kakashi says getting up and shoving his watch in Obito's face while tapping on it to indicate the passage of time.
"Hatake, please close the door behind you, thanks." Obito grins at Kakashi and lies down in his bed again.
