16. Specialised Wizarding Schools: Charm School
Charm School was a school that provided specialised education in the field of Charms and other wizard courses for children before the commencement of their education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
History: Located in London, Charm School was founded in the 1960s by Muggleborn witch Margaret Merry. It is a school for children to attend before they are old enough to go to Hogwarts. They don't really learn to do magic as they are not allowed to use a wand until the age of eleven and they start at Hogwarts. But they learn about magic and its uses, sort of like the theory of magic but geared towards eight-year-olds. When Margaret and her wizard husband had three young children, Margaret thought it was silly that there was no school for them to go to until the age of eleven. So, she wanted her children to be educated in something before they reached eleven. She started the Charm School to at first teach her children and the children of friends a little bit about simple spells and potions, and slowly but surely, the Charm School expanded and today, it teaches about one hundred youngsters a year.
Curriculum: Besides learning some basics about magic, Charm School also can help young children manage and control their magical abilities. Even though they're not allowed to use wands, some children may bring an old, hand-me-down wand to Charm School. But because they're so young and the wand did not choose them, they can't do much with it. They more so get used to holding a wand and what a wand means in a supervised environment.
