Chapter 9

We sat in his car and we had a quiet ride to my place. He stopped in front f my house and as I was getting out he said, “Oh. My mom wanted me to tell you to come an hour early and I quote, “tell Kylie to come an hour early. I picked out the perfect dress for her.” So come early, okay?”

I stared at him confused. I asked, “Can’t I just wear jeans and tee?”

Jesse laughed and said, “Kylie, it’s wedding not a day at the mall.”

I frowned and pouted. I said, “Fine. I’ll be there by five?”

He smiled and said, “Yeah.” I smiled and left.

I entered the house and it was quiet. I slowly went to the kitchen to make something to eat. I could hear footsteps coming towards me. I knew my father must be starving and must have drunk on an empty stomach which basically meant he was drunk out of his mind.

I turned to fridge and opened the freezer not paying any attention to the footsteps. I stuffed some macaroni and cheese into the microwave and turned around to see my father passed out on the floor. I sighed. He must have hurt himself and he was going to be in a lot of pain tomorrow. I walked over to him and bent over trying to pick him up. That was such an epic fail. I couldn’t let him lie there. I dragged him by the arm to couch. I knew it wasn’t the right way to take him there but he was just so heavy. When we reached the couch, I picked him up by the arm and with all my possible strength put him on the couch. I sighed in relief after leaving him on the couch. Well, at least I didn’t have to listen to his shit. The microwave beeped and I went over and took out my food.

I went upstairs to my room after eating. I wasn’t in the mood to do any homework. I laid down on my bed thinking about my stupid, crazy ass day. I had my first cat fight ever.  I couldn’t hate Amy more. She was just a terrible person. I decided not to think about it. I might start to cry again. I wasn’t extremely sleepy, yet. I was wondering how tomorrow was going to be. I was remembering the times I used to go with Jesse and his parents to their family get together(s). They used to be fun. Everyone was so nice and sweet and they always treated me like family.

I woke up next morning and starred at the ceiling. I had eventually dozed off last night. After staring at the ceiling for a while I got up and decided to go get ready for school. I went to my closet and starred at it. What to wear? What to wear? I really wasn’t in the mood to dress up. I pulled out whatever was on top. I got dressed and left for school.

I reached school and was taking out my books for history when a heard, “Hey shorty.” I knew who it was. I turned around and gave Jesse an ‘I’m going to kill you’ look. I used to hate it when someone called me short. He started to laugh. I rolled my eyes and shut my locker. Jesse was taller than me, not very tall but quite a bit.

I said, “You know I hate it when you call me short.”

Jesse said with an evil smile, “That’s why I called you short genius.”

I looked at him upset. I said, “You’re really mean.” He laughed and we walked to class. School was really boring.

The bell rang and it was last period. I met Jesse and then went home. I had about an hour before going to Jesse’s place. I decided to make dinner and keep it on the kitchen counter just incase I was late. I didn’t want my father to drink on an empty stomach again

I kept dinner on the table and went to my room. I looked at the time and it was time to leave. I quickly put my hair into a high ponytail and went outside. I was walking to Jesse’s place. I felt a little excited. I wanted to know what Mrs. Miller had picked out for me. She had a very classy taste.

I reached Jesse’s place and went and rang the bell. Jesse opened the door and said, “My mom’s been waiting for you. She’s been so excited to make you her Barbie doll.” I laughed because Mrs. Miller used to use me as her personal dress up doll as a kid. She used to just love it and I used to hate it.

I smiled and said, “She used to always love it.” We walked into the living room and saw Jesse’s mom and dad there.

She smiled and said, “Hi honey. I can’t wait for you to see your dress.” She held me by the hand and took me to her room which was on the first floor opposite Jesse’s. I could hear Jesse laugh a bit as I left the living room.

I looked around the room. It was so pretty. It had wooden flooring and a bed in the middle. There a tv in front of the bed attached to the wall. The walls were white. This house was almost completely white. All the walls were anyway.

Mrs. Miller said, “Do you like the dress?” I looked at this amazing whitish cream dress with a gold glitter design on it. My mouth dropped. It looked so…so pretty. She picked it up and handed it over to me.

She pointed at the bathroom door and said, “Go, try it out. I can’t wait to see you in it. I know you’re going to look gorgeous.” I just smiled and walked towards the door. I went in and put it on. I looked at the mirror and it looked really hot. The neck of the dress was a deep V and it had a deeper V at the back. It was body fitting and long (like reached my feet long) with an extremely slight flair at the bottom just making it easy to walk. I looked at myself. It felt a little uncomfortable. I wasn’t used to dressing like this. The neck was a little ‘too’ deep or at least I thought it was.

I walked out and saw the biggest smile on Mrs. Miller’s face. She looked so happy and I felt really shy. She said, “Honey, you look so pretty. You also need to eat more. You’re incredibly thin.”

I smiled and said, “Well I do eat.” She just laughed.

She said, “Let’s do your hair and make up.” I just nodded.

She did my hair and make up. She didn’t let me tie my hair up and my make up was light. Well, the less make up part was good. I never liked make up much. I looked at myself in the mirror and I was kind of amazed at the way I looked. Mrs. Miller handed me a pair of gold shoes which were 6 inch high stilettos. I just looked at them and thought, ‘I’m going to fall today.’ I put them on and tried to stand which was so hard. I smiled a little unsure.

Jesse’s mom said, “Relax honey. You look amazing. And I know you’re scared you are going to fall in those heels but you won’t.”

I smiled and said, “Thank you. I really love the dress, shoes and my hair and make up.”

She laughed and said, “I knew you would. The dress just screams you.” I smiled and she continued, “Okay hon. I got to get dress. I’m sure Jesse’s done getting dress. You guys can wait in the living room for me and Jesse’s dad.” I nodded and started walking towards the door. She asked just as I had reached the door, “Can you ask Mr. Miller to come upstairs.”

I smiled and said, “Sure.” I opened the door and went out. I was trying to walk with those damn pretty, high heels. I turned to walk down the stairs and saw Mr. Miller coming up the stairs.

He looked a lot like Jesse but older and taller. I smiled at him and said, “Mrs. Miller was asking for you.”

He smiled a very fatherly smile and said, “I figured as I heard the door open.” Mr. and Mrs. Miller were deeply in love with each other even after twelve years. It was really cute. They knew each and every detail about each other. He continued, “Jesse’s downstairs.”

I smiled and said; “Thanks” He went to his room. I walked down the stairs and saw Jesse in the kitchen in a ‘tuxedo’. I jaw dropped when I saw him. He looked so cute. His brown hair was kind of messy which suits so perfectly. God, he looked amazing but he’s my best friend.

Jesse turned and saw me standing there. He just stared and checked me out. I blushed and looked away. He smiled and asked, “Well, how do I look? I’ve never worn a tuxedo before.”

I smiled a bit and said, “Not bad. Quite good, actually.”

He smiled and said, “That’s a relief. I thought I looked like a creep.”

I laughed and said, “Don’t worry. You don’t.”

He said, “Thank you. I see my mom used you like her own personal doll.”

I laughed and said, “Yeah but she’s really good at this type of stuff.” I indicated to the dress while saying that.

He laughed and said, “Yeah.” He walked up to me and looked at me suspiciously and said, “You look taller.” I looked at him with eye brow raised. For a straight ‘A’ student he wasn’t very smart. I was wearing six inch high heels. It was obvious.

I said, “Heels.” He laughed. He stopped laughing and just stared at me. I got a little nervous. I mean, he was just staring at me.

He said, “You look really pretty.” I looked at him and looked down blushing. What was wrong with me? Why was I blushing so much?

I said, “Thanks. It’s all because of your mom.”

He laughed and said, “I know.” We both went to the living room and sat on the couch and talked till Mr. and Mrs. Miller came downstairs.

It was time to leave and we got into Jesse’s dad’s silver car. Jesse and I sat at the back. We kept quiet for most of the ride. When we reached we had got out of the car while Mr. Miller went to park it.

The place was beautiful. It was an outdoor wedding, in a garden like place. The ceremony was inside but the reception was outside. It was like a picture perfect wedding place. There were lights and flowers. There was a small church for the ceremony and the garden behind the church. It wasn’t a big white wedding. It was a small and peaceful one. It was like only close family and friends.

Mrs. Miller said, “Oh Kylie, I completely forgot.” She was looking for something in her purse. She took out a small, blue box and handed it over to me. She continued, “Open it and wear it.” I looked at box confused and opened it. It was gold necklace and a small heart shaped pendent with a white stone in the middle. The pendent was so pretty and the stone sparkled like a single star in the middle of the dark, black shy. I looked up at Mrs. Miller.

I asked, “Are you sure you want me to wear it? What if I loose it?” It was too pretty to loose.

She smiled and said, “Honey, it’s yours. It’s a gift from me.” My heart sunk as the words came out. The necklace looked expensive. Why was she so nice to me? I was almost about to cry. I missed my mother. I wish I had a mother like Mrs. Miller. She was like my mother but she wasn’t mine.

I sighed and said, “I can’t take this. It’s too valuable.” I held the box towards her.

She must have seen the tears in my eyes waiting to come out. She said, “Kylie, honey, you’re like my daughter. I’ve wanted to give you this for so long. Don’t reject it. I always thought you were too young for something like this but after looking how amazing and grown you look…I really want you to keep it.” I just nodded because if I knew that I had spoken at that moment I would have cried. I took a deep breath and smiled.

I hugged Jesse’s mom and said, “Thank you.” She stroked my hair and I knew she was smiling.

She said, “You’re welcome, honey.” I pulled away from the hug and stood up straight. She looked at Jesse and said, “Jesse help Kylie to put that necklace on while I go and see where your dad is.” Jesse just nodded.

Mrs. Miller walked away and left Jesse and me there. Jesse took the necklace from me and said, “Turn around.” I looked at him confused.

He asked making me feel stupid, “How will I put the necklace around your neck if you don’t turn around?” I turned around. I didn’t know what to do. Jesse slowly moved my hair to one side. He whispered in my ear, “Hold your hair up.”  I felt a little shy and nervous. It was such a weird feeling but I liked it. I held my hair up a bit and he put the necklace around my neck. I could feel his warm hands at the back of my neck while he was trying to lock the necklace. After a few seconds, he was done. He slowly moved his index finger in a circular motion at the back of neck making me shake a bit. I closed my eyes slowly and opened them slowly. I felt butterflies in my stomach.

Jesse whispered again, “You can put your hair down.” He held my wrist of the hand that was holding up my hair, slowly moving it down. I was just about to turn to look at Jesse when Mr. and Mrs. Miller came up and asked, “Let’s go in?”
