Today’s the first day of your college freshmen orientation. You didn’t really pay attention to your blockmates and you only spent time with your bestfriend, Chin. For every activity that you did during the orientation, you always grouped with her because you didn’t want to befriend any of your blockmates yet. You saw your classmates as rich, bratty kids and you disliked such kind of people.
I need to see first which ones I can befriend… you told yourself.
You met Mark on the first day of the two-day freshmen orientation. Your facilitator asked the class to fill out something (you don’t really remember anymore what it was). You glanced to your left and locked eyes with a boy. You were about to look away when he asks you, “Hey, do you have an extra pen?”
And that’s where it all started. You introduced yourselves and you introduced him to your bestfriend. He started hanging out with you that same day. You were neutral about him – you didn’t particularly like him or hated him – but you still felt uneasy around him.
A few weeks after, classes finally started. On your way to school, you wondered whether Mark would still hang out with you or if that’s only back at the orientation. But when you saw him in your first class, he smiled at you and even stuck his tongue out at you. So I guess this means we’re officially friends…
This marked the start of your friendship. Every chance you got, you always chose to be grouped with Chin and Mark. Every time you had a long break, your group always hanged out together – eating, studying or playing computer games at a shop near the university. Even online, you’re still chatting about all kinds of things – jokes, school-related topics, gossips, your obsession with Kpop, basically just about anything under the sun. Your world basically revolved around your friends, further fueling the growing rift between you and your boyfriend, Yugyeom. Without you realizing, even when you talk to him, you still mention your friends – especially Mark. The jealous type that he is, Yugyeom felt hurt and obviously got mad at you. But this didn’t stop you from being friends with Mark.
Why should I? It’s not like I’m having an affair or anything. He’s just a friend. I don’t even see him as someone I’d like as more than a friend.
Or maybe it was too early to say such things.
With all three of you always hanging out, you soon started liking Mark. You tried to ignore it because you had a boyfriend living abroad. You thought that even if your relationship with Yugyeom is on the rocks, you still should not betray him. You tried to poison your mind by thinking of Mark’s flaws but your feelings kept on growing. The more you tried to point out his flaws, the more you learned to accept him for who he was.

You were on your way home and Mark volunteered to walk with you. Contrary to your usual rowdy get-togethers, you are both too quiet it made you uncomfortable.
Seeing that your house is now only a few blocks away, you started walking faster, desperate to escape the growing unease between you.
“Wait.” Mark finally spoke but you ignored him. You continued walking but the male grabs your arm, stopping you on your tracks.
“Y-yes?”
“Are you avoiding me?”
“N-no! Why would I? You’re my bestfriend so how could I avoid you?”
He sighs, “If you’re being like this then I might as well take a risk now.”
“What do you mean?”
In an instant, his lips are on yours. You could feel your heart beating like crazy against your chest. A warm feeling spreads across it, making you feel weak. With wide eyes, you looked at Mark’s handsome face. He had his eyes closed and he looked calm – like all the tension between you two disappeared the moment your lips touched.
This is wrong… This is wrong!
You pushed Mark away and wiped your mouth on the sleeve of your blouse. “What the fck was that?!” You asked furiously.
“I… like you. I really like you…”
“WHAT?!”
“I like you,” Mark repeats. He tries to hold your hand and come close to you but you stop him. This is so much for you to handle and you’re starting to have a headache. You are feeling so confused right now and you just want to be alone.
“I-I’m so sorry…” And you left him. He doesn’t chase after you.
I need Yugyeom… Right… He can help me on this. I am just confused…
As soon as you entered the house, you went straight to your room. You boot your laptop in a hurry, silently hoping your boyfriend’s online at the moment given the one-hour difference in your time zones. But he wasn’t. Instead, you find a message from him. It said:
“I’m sorry that you have to read this today but… I’ve realized that there is no point in continuing this relationship anymore. I’m sorry if I’m being a jerk by telling you this online but I’m afraid that if I do tell you this in person… I might just end up clinging on to a hopeless relationship like ours. I know we became a couple because you didn’t want to hurt my feelings. I tried to ignore that fact and just hoped that you’d fall for me anyway. I think you did, right – but maybe not as deep as I did towards you… Don’t worry, I don’t hate you or anything… In fact, I’m very happy that you gave me a chance; that you tried to love me; that you tried to put up with a clingy boyfriend like me for almost two years. I am very thankful to you for that. Please always remember that I did this because I love you. I love you so much I’m willing to let you go… Please be happy…”
I’m so sorry… Your tears fell as you realize just how pathetic you are. Yugyeom had known that you’ve been lying about liking him right from the start. You felt ashamed of yourself. You basically just played with someone else’s feelings. To think that just today, your bestfriend confessed to you. But it felt different this time. Then again, how can you be so sure? How sure are you that you won’t just be playing along again?

CHIN: Hey, Mark’s coming back today, fresh from L.A. You should meet with him. I know you’re dying to see him. Stop doubting your feelings! Why else would you cry each night thinking of him? Why else would you long for him? He’s got no one to fetch him in the airport so you should.
You let out a big sigh after reading your bestfriend’s message. For the past four years, she’s tried to set you and Mark up. She knew about you turning Mark down and the two of you pretending like nothing happened. But as your “number one shipper”, as Chin refers to herself, she wants you two to end up together.
“His ETA?” As soon as you send your response, Chin calls you, squealing over the phone. “OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!! So you’ll come fetch him??? Oh my goddddd!!! Actually it’s in 2 hours.”
“What?!”
“Well, I just read the message he left before he flew here… I’m out of town so even if I wanted to, I can’t go see him…”
Tss. If I know, this was all planned. “Okay, okay. I’ll try to make it.”
“Don’t try, do it! Now’s your chance to tell him how you really feel.”
You did wait for Mark but you hid as soon as you saw him at the arrival area. He’s on the phone with someone. “What? I don’t see her here… She did? Well, maybe she still hates me. Haha, I’m just kidding. Thank you anyway. I’ll see you guys soon.”
Chin? She must’ve told him I was going to fetch him…
Until you’re sure Mark has left already, you left the airport as well. I’m not yet ready to face him…
After you dumped Mark, things started becoming awkward between the two of you. Initially, he tried to change things back to normal but soon gave up after a confrontation. You told him that you’re going through a hard time and being close to him again like before was impossible. You wanted to make sure first that it won’t be another “forced-to-like-my-friend” case like with Yugyeom – which of course, you didn’t tell Mark. You simple said you were confused and that you weren’t ready. He told you that he understood what you meant and the next thing you knew, he’s already left for L.A. The latter said he had no hard feelings towards you and that he’d just wait. By the time you realized that you really did like Mark back, he’s already living faraway.

Instead of going straight home, you just walked aimlessly around your neighborhood. Without realizing it, you ended up at Mark’s family’s house. From outside, you try to check if anyone’s inside.
You said loudly to yourself, “He’s probably staying at a hotel, right?”
“Who? Me?”
You turn around and standing in front of you is a tall, lean, handsome man. If you only had the guts, you could’ve just jumped at him and hugged him tightly.
“Uhh, hi. I heard you’re back so I checked if… you’re here…”
“And I heard you were going to fetch me.” Mark opens the door and invites you inside.
“Uhh, yeah. Sorry, I had something to do… Uhm, hey, the place looks really clean. Did your parents ask someone to clean this?”
He nods. “And there’s food and groceries. What would you like to eat?”
“Ah, no, thank you.”
“If you won’t eat here, then just go on a date with me. I mean... today’s Valentines and a pretty girl like you shouldn’t be alone. That is… if you’re okay with going out with me…”
“Eh? O-okay…” You wanted to smack your head for accepting his invitation.
“Good!”

After your little date – where you really just ate at a restaurant and window-shopped – Mark offered to walk you home. You let him because honestly, you’re enjoying his company. You missed him dearly and you’d do anything to bring back the bond you once had.
You walk in silence, your hands bumping at each other. At your peripheral vision, you could see Mark take a deep breath then he takes your hand in his. ‘Now’s your chance…’ Chin’s message rings inside your head.
A few blocks away from your house, probably the same spot where Mark first kissed you four years ago, you finally speak, “Mark… Remember what you told me a few years ago?”
Mark glances at you, “Ah, that… Don’t bother yourself with it anymore.”
Seeing your confused look, he smiles and gazes at your eyes, “I don’t like you anymore…”
You awkwardly laugh. “.Hahahaha, really? That’s good.” You continue walking but he grabs your arm like he did years ago.
“I love you…”
And that’s all you wanted to hear.
“Actually, I think I fell in love with you even back—“
You kiss him and Mark wraps his arms around your waist. You could feel him smile into the kiss. With teary eyes, you break away and tell him, “I love you too. I’m sorry if I took this long to realize… to tell you… I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings before. I’m sorry if–“
“Shhhh… I love you and you love me. That’s all that matters…”
Mark kisses your tears away, making you blush. You smile and hug him. “Thank you for coming back…”
“Thank you for giving me a reason to come back…”
