_____________

It's funny how the universe works; some days it completely goes against your will, and the next thing you know, it makes you feel as though you owned the world. But this, you weren't sure exactly what the universe's intentions were.

Inches away from the entrance of Hogwarts, you stood frozen in the middle, watching the students rush by you with excitement. Gaping mindlessly around you with your brows furrowed, your empty mind began to fill itself with worrisome and anxiety.

"Forth year," you whispered under your breath as you began taking small steps into the great castle. "Never thought I'd ever come this far."

You sauntered into the dim castle, dissolving into the crowd when you felt a light tap on your shoulder. You hastily turn around as you met eyes with a blue-eyed, expressionless boy. He towered you with his hands behind him, narrowing his eyes while he began to examine your features meticulously. You gazed at him, letting out a little awkward chuckle. Did he know you? Do you know him? You doubted it, but somehow you felt a familiar, faint energy engulfing you. The same energy you felt when you were younger, usually by a certain presence.

"Hm," he huffed, glancing away from you. He let out a small sigh, raising his eyebrows. You grew more perplexed by the second, being stopped by a boy only to be stared at uncomfortably. "Little tip—you'd go further if you didn't waste your time mumbling to yourself."

Son of a bitch, you thought as you scoffed in disbelief.

"Is that all?" you asked as you crossed your arms. He mimicked your move as he tilted his head at you, his tongue running through his teeth. You could feel your lips stiffen in a trembling frown as your hands balled into a fist subconsciously.

"No," he muttered with a smirk. "I presume you're Y/N?"

"Perhaps."

"Good to know," he snickered, his smile widening as he gazed away from you.

A moment of silence stood between you two as you stared at him in confusion. "And you are..?"

He opened his mouth, but before he could say a word, his chances were stripped off by an unexpected group of boys abruptly crowding around him. You grew more perplexed, but your interests soon faded away as he began attending to those boys rather than to you. He turned around with a small smile, greeting them politely. Soon, you were washed away by the crowd, leaving the boy nothing but your absence.

Approaching the vast hall, your eyes scanned around the room for familiar faces. It was no surprise you found yourself stranded without an acquaintance; you had a tendency of befriending wanderers of the school rather than grounded ones. Sighing, you began searching around the room for a vacant seat in the Slytherin table. As you slithered through groups of people rabbling around, a wave of nausea washed over you, causing you to lose your balance. Tipping on your heels, your eyes shut as you prepared yourself to meet your fate, but was suddenly greeted with a pair of arms catching you mid-air.

"You clumsy fool," a familiar voice snickered as you felt yourself being pulled back on your feet. Your eyes flickered open, meeting the same blue eyes you had encountered before.

"Oh," you huffed, narrowing your eyes at the same boy once again. "It's you again."

He shot you an amused smirk as his hands slipped away from your waist. Out of nowhere, your stomach began churning and curling as though there was something inside of it. Flustered, you hastily turned your back to him with your nose wrinkled, grasping onto your stomach. I'm not having a panic attack, am I? you thought to yourself. For a moment, you allowed yourself to inhale calmly, and as you turned around exhaling your worries out, the boy was nothing but a gust of wind standing before you. It baffled you for a minute, but it was karma you had received for leaving him at the entrance.

As you settled into your compacted seat between two unacquainted year sixes, you had fallen back into the fate of meeting those same blue eyes once again.

"Where are your friends?" you asked, scanning the room for a particular brunette you had seen with the boy before.

"Reinhard?"

"Lestrange, right? Wait, how did you-"

"Doesn't matter, I couldn't care less anyway."

You snorted in revulsion, "what a friend."

A resounding, giddy laughter abruptly boomed beside you as the chair began shaking vigorously. You gawked at the girl sitting beside you indignantly as she gasped at the sight of the boy before you.

"Tom Ridd- merlin's beard!" she chortled as her hands flew to her mouth in astonishment. "Girls, it's Tom Riddle!"

Oh, holy fuck, you realised as your eyes widened in disbelief.

____________

circa 1937
wool's orphanage, london

Hiding behind a bricked pillar, you stood from afar, gaping at a particular boy you found intriguing. He sat alone on a bench, gazing at the rocks he held with not a worry in the world. Children around him feared him; the things he was capable of was beyond anyone's understanding. Perhaps that's why you fancied his ways. Your hands nervously tugged onto your worn out, beige skirt as second thoughts began to fill your head.

"I have to do this," you thought to yourself, trembling in silence.

As you stepped into the light, you glanced up to see your close friend panting before you with her back resting on the pillar for support. Your face scrunched up as she began to reek of sweat and her face awfully flustered from running.

"What's wrong?" you asked, your feet slightly stepping away from the girl.

"It slipped! I didn't mean it! I'm sorry!" she cried, falling onto her knees. You stammered for a moment without a clue on what she's on about.

"Wh- huh?"

"You... fancying... the Riddle boy," she stuttered, gazing up at you from the ground as tears filled her eyes.

At that moment, a sigh of defeat escaped your lips as realisation hit you hard. Glancing around, whispers began circulating the group of children as their eyes landed on you scathingly, then exchanging amused glances at each other.

Your brows furrowed as you stood there, unaware of what was going on before you. A wave of anxiety crashed over you the moment you spotted one of those children whispering into the lonely boy's ears. At that point, doom fell upon you as his eyes perked up, meeting your worrisome gaze. His mouth slightly opened, but before you could hear anything he had to say, your legs went dashing from the courtyard into the building as scalding tears poured down your flustered cheeks.

Stranded in the middle of the empty, dull entrance, your eyes landed on an unfamiliar old man standing by the staircase.

It was also the very last time you saw Tom Riddle.

_______________

"If you say a word, I'll hex your arse," you snarled, glaring at the boy.

"So you remember."

Your anger rose into flames, dancing behind your enraged, dark e/c eyes. A mere sigh escaped your lips, but felt like fire against your skin. Mortified, your stomach clenched, leaving you vulnerable. As your overwhelming emotions had you completely zoned out from reality, Tom silently scrutinised you. He found himself utterly intrigued by you—since the very start. As you sunk deeper into your emotions, a light breeze washed over you, pulling you back to reality.

And yet again, your eyes landed on his.

"I never got a chance to say something," he said. Despite the hall being a bustling mess, his breathing was the only thing you could hear. The flick of his wand from under the table was somehow even more resounding than a while crowd of chatters.

You never really got over him, did you?

"Say it, then."

He paused for a moment, gazing into your eyes. Why do I feel this way, he asked himself. His brows furrowed as his thoughts dived deeper into his darkness; the worst part was there was no rock bottom.

"Tom," you hissed as you realised he was zoning out as you did earlier. "Tom!"

His lips curved into a smile—a rather disturbing smile—as he found himself back on the shore of his mind, rescued from the darkness. You grew perplexed, watching him silent but his eyes fixed on yours. An uneasy feeling crashed over you the longer you gazed at him; there was something about him that was no longer there, and it petrified you.

The intense silence was broken at last by the sound the year sixes shrilling in our ears. Your face scrunched up indignantly, but if it wasn't for them you'd still be in concern.

"Thank you," he finally spoke. "You're the only one I've ever known to find the slightest thing in me fascinating."

He shot you a warm smile, but deep down, he wasn't even sure if it was genuine.
