As Becca stepped back into her red lace panties, I began to ask myself what I was doing. I had met a great girl – a perfect girl – who I maybe actually had a chance with, and I was still sleeping with a girl I hardly cared about. I had sworn to myself I would sleep with her, but that was it. So why was I still doing it?

Maybe it was because, deep down, I felt like I didn’t have a shot with Mia. She almost seemed too good for me. And, coming from me, that’s really saying something. Not that she’s too pretty for me, but more like I’m too much of a douche for me. As soon as she got to talking about me and heard about my reputation, she wouldn’t even give me a chance.

“So,” Becca clears her throat, breaking my thought. I jolt my head toward her. “I’m gonna get going.”

“What?” I say, rather surprised. Here I am thinking that this girl is falling in love with me, or some shit. Is she the one hitting and running?

“Really Cody?” she asks, looking at me dumbfounded, “Isn’t that what you want?”

“What do you mean?” I ask her, feeling stumped.

“Oh God,” she gasps, sitting back down, “Do you actually like me?”

“Uh-“ I mutter, but she interrupts me before I have a chance to answer.

“Oh Cody,” she smiles, touching my leg, “That’s sweet, but… I kinda thought we were just having sex.”

“Well, yeah,” I spit back, trying to hold back my smile. Thank god this girl didn’t let me answer, because I had no idea how to tell her I don’t like her.

“Besides, I got an eight AM-“

“Oh yeah!” I interrupt her, more excitedly than I mean to. “Tomorrow is Wednesday!” I can’t remember the last time I actually looked forward to a class just to see a girl. Probably not since middle school. Not since I learned what sex was.

“Yeah…” She fades off, standing back to her feet and walking toward my dorm door, “Okay, I’ll see you around.” And she leaves without saying another word.

So I may have screwed things up with the girl I had a physical crush on. But it was worth it for a girl I was actually feeling something for.

The alarm goes off Wednesday morning, and this time it’s not as painful. I turn it off before Mason can bitch, and instantly pull myself out of bed. I take a little more time getting ready this morning. I take time in the shower, and I take time brushing my teeth. I take all the time in the world so that every piece of me can smell good. I even shave. And that’s saying a lot, because I don’t think I’ve ever shaved in the morning.

I probably should have watched my time though. By the time I deemed myself good enough for Mia, it was nearly eight o’clock, and I knew I would be late.

And late I was. I came running into the classroom almost ten after eight, and the classroom was nearly full. I saw Mia sitting in the same seat from Monday, but this time the seat next to her was taken. Taken by another guy, to make matters worse.

“Ah, hello,” professor Foster greets me, glancing down at his watch, “Ten minutes late. Not a good first impression. Please take a seat, mister…” he fades off as if I’m supposed to finish the sentence for him.

“Cody,” I murmur, falling into a chair right dab in the front.

“Mr. Cody,” he repeats me, and slowly walks over until he’s standing directly over me, “We were just discussing evolution, Mr. Cody. What do you think about evolution, Mr. Cody?”

For a guy to cancel the first class, I never would have pegged Foster to be such an asshole. I look up to him and blink, “It was cool.”

There’s some laughter in the classroom as Foster shuts his eyes and slowly backs away. “Very funny,” he mutters, taking a seat at the front of the classroom. “Do you think evolution is a joke, Mr. Cody?”

“Well, no,” I begin, “but plenty of other people do.”

Foster smacks his lips and begins rambling but I quickly space out. I probably would care more about this evolution shit if the guy teaching it wasn’t a jackass.

Then again, I probably wouldn’t.

I start planning out the party in my head. It was in two days, and I had no idea how I was going to go about everything. I had told Mia I’d stay sober with her, but honestly, what fun is that? Maybe I’ll get lucky and she’ll take the first shot.

Not that I want Mia to get drunk or anything, but I think she’d have a lot more fun if she was drinking. I think she would like me a lot more if she was drinking.

Before I even realize it, the hour and fifteen minutes is over and Foster dismisses us. To my surprise, I see Mia waiting in the back of the classroom for me.

“Hey!” She says as I get near, “I think Foster likes you.” She giggles, glancing back at the douche.

“Yeah, I mean, how could he not?” I laugh back, suddenly lost in her blue eyes.

“So um,” she begins, licking her top lip, “Are you still having that party?”

“Of course!” I say, more excitedly than I meant to. The fact that this girl is actually interested in my party amazes me.

“Would it be okay if I brought a friend?” She asks, twirling her hair.

Part of me wants to say no; but of course I can’t tell her no. Any other time I let a girl bring a friend to a party, she always disappeared with said friend. I was never included in the picture. Or, even worse, her friend ends up being a guy. And they end up being more than friends.

“Sure. What’s her name?” I nonchalantly ask, hoping she tells me it’s a girl.

“Emily-” Thank god, “she’s actually in your English class!” I think back to my English class, trying to pick out who exactly Emily was, but I’m stumped. That class had been right after I meet Mia, so I just assume my mind was too preoccupied to notice any other girls.

“Oh yeah!” I lie, pretending I actually know this Emily, “Yeah, of course she can come.” Maybe I’ll get lucky and she’ll be a total skank for abandons Mia for some guy.

“Okay great,” she says, and reaches for her phone, “Could I get your number? Then you can text me the address and all?”

“Of course,” I smile, and give her my number. There’s a certain pride you feel when a girl asks you for your number first. It’s an even better feeling when you actually kind of like this girl.

“Great,” she smiles, and I swear I see her blush. “I’ll text you,” she says, as she leaves the classroom.

I wanna scream. I’ve never felt this way before. I’ve talked to plenty of girls before, I’ve gotten numbers from plenty of girls before, I’ve liked plenty of girls before. But it was never like this. And I have no idea why I feel like this.

Mason is already back at the dorm room when I get back from English. He’s sitting on the bed on his phone. As soon as I walk in, he gestures me to be quiet.

“Babe,” he says through the phone, “I said I’m sorry. That’s not enough?” He pauses for a minute, looking at me and rolling his eyes. “Whatever, be a bitch. Have a nice life.” And he hangs up.

“I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that was Kelli?” I ask, already knowing the answer.

“Yeah,” he shakes his head, but he has a smile on his face, “Apparently Rachel told her that I slept with her. Whatever, they’re both skanks.”

“Damn, I’m sorry dude,” I say, and I actually mean it. I know Mason is putting on a front, but I could tell he liked that girl. He acted so different around her; he acted like he was actually a good guy who didn’t cheat.

“Nah, it’s cool,” he shrugs, standing to his feet, “I’ll be single for the party, so it should be fun.”

“Yeah,” I laugh, and Mia comes to my mind, “Oh yeah dude, I wanted to tell you. I invited this girl to the party.”

“Yeah?” He chuckles, turning back to me, “You calling dibs?”

“No it’s not like that. I actually, y’know, kinda like her,” I look down at my fingers, “So I guess I’m kinda calling dibs. But, not like sex dibs.”

“So I can still fuck her?” He laughs.

I roll my eyes and laugh back at him, “You can have her friend.”
