They always find contentment in their hugs. It was an affirmation of their friendship and a promise that they'll always have each other's back.
They moved over to the parasol with a wooden table where they laid out the boxes of chicken and Yoo Chan went inside the house to get the drinks. It wasn't long before laughter and non stop conversations transpired as they caught up on each other's lives.
There was a brief pause in their conversation and Bok Joo took the opportunity ask if something was troubling him.
"Are you ok Yoo Chan? Looks like something was bothering you earlier." She asked in concern.
Yoo Chan let out a deep sigh. "Looks like Seo Ri noona likes someone else."
Bok Joo felt bad for her friend. She knew how much he liked Seo Ri Unni. She felt even worse that here she was happily dating and to think Yoo Chan was one of the reason that she had the courage to open her heart to someone and that she was worthy to be loved.
"I'm sorry Chan ah, but you're going to fight for her right? I know you're not a quitter." She told him.
He looked at her with a sad smile. " Nah, not this time. This time I'm accepting this defeat graciously."
"Maybe the one for you is still taking her time in getting here." She told him lightly trying to lift up her friend's mood. "Besides I know for a fact that ladies are lining up to date you." she she added jokingly.
Yoo Chan chuckled and rolled his eyes at her. But it was true. The guy had a huge fanbase of girls of all ages. Older women adored him and the younger ones were all clamouring up to be his girlfriend. With his tall athletic figure, Grecian shaped nose, sculpted eyebrows and infectious smile her friend was in fact very good looking.
Thinking about how she found Yoo Chan handsome suddenly made Bok Joo blush. You have a boyfriend you idiot! She told herself.
Oblivious to what Bok Joo was thinking Yoo Chan was grateful to have a friend like Bok Joo who was just as affected when he was feeling down.
"I'll be fine noona, I just have to channel that What would Kim Bok Joo do? Attitude then I know I'd be alright who knows I might find a pretty swimmer for a girlfriend too." He teased her with a wink.
"Yah!" She pushed him with her hand. Yoo Chan laughed but he couldn't help it she looked cute when her face turned all red when she's agitated or embarrassed.
He then pulled her closer by her shoulder to ruffle her hair.
"Noona, let's not go too long without seeing each other okay?"
He missed his friend and her no holds barred and bubbly personality always gave him a renewed sense of optimism and drive.
Bok Joo was about to agree when she realized she haven't given him the big news yet. She pulled away from his arm and faced him fully in which Yoo Chan did the same.
"Umm, first I have some good news and bad news for you." She said tentatively.
"O-kay" He answered suddenly confused.
"Which one would you like first?" She asked again fidgeting with her fingers.
"Okay let's go with the good news first." He said to her.
"I was accepted to Taerung National Training Center" she announced.
Yoo Chan held her by the shoulders and shook her. "What?! And you just happened to tell me now? That's awesome noona!" He exclaimed elated by the news. "Tell me everything." He demanded.
Bok Joo then proceeded to tell him about it as he listened with rapt attention.
"Wow! It's really great Noona and a great opportunity for you! Imagine I would be seeing you joining the Olympics someday!" He told her excitedly.
"So what's the bad news?" He asked with brows furrowed.
"Well i guess we would be seeing each other much less since it's quite far and I wouldn't be coming home often." She explained.
Yoo Chan smiled tenderly at her touched that she was still thinking of him despite this huge opportunity given to her.
"Silly noona, I wouldn't mind just seeing your face on my phone screen and hearing your voice on the phone every few weeks when it meant seeing you succeed in something you're good at in something you love. Besides you might see me there sooner if I go pro." He wiggled her eyes at her.
Bok Joo eyes widened excited at the possibility that Yoo Chan would be in Taerung too. "Are you decided to go pro? Have you accepted the offer?"
Yoo Chan scratched his head. " I'm undecided still noona. I'm also considering going into college first like you."
"Follow whatever your heart decides Chan ah,You're ten times more smarter than me so college would be a breeze for you. What's important is please don't change as being the Yoo Chan that I know and keep doing what you love because in the end our lives would not be measured by the success we had but by the love of of those we care about around us and especially the happiness and contentment that we gained. Most of all never forget I will always be here for you no matter what." She told him sincerely.
Her hazel eyes was sparkling in the dark and Yoo Chan couldn't help thinking that Joon Hyung was a lucky man to have a pretty girlfriend despite what others may say and one with a big heart at that.
Bok Joo's phone suddenly rang. It was her father. It was probably getting really busy in the restaurant and they needed her help realizing she had been gone a few hours already.
She wasn't ready to say goodbye as she didn't know when she'd get to see him next. Yoo Chan was dreading the inevitable too.
They both stood up at the same time. "I have to go." She said softly.
Yoo Chan nodded. They both walked silently towards the gate. As they were walking Bok Joo suddenly remembered her dream the other night. It was quite weird, she dreamt of her and Yoo Chan only this time they were both much older and they were both doctors in a remote hospital. They too started out fighting and bickering and suddenly end up kissing each other one night! She almost jumped when her thoughts were interrupted with Yoo Chan clearing his throat and was his cheeks tinged with redness? She couldn't be sure as she too was feeling embarrassed with what was on her mind. But she couldn't help asking if he was okay.
Yoo Chan nodded his head that he was fine but in truth he was glad humans couldn't read minds because just now he was thinking about the dream he had the other night where both he and Bok Joo were doctors. He was a genius surgical doctor with money troubles and parental issues while Bok Joo who looked a little bit different with long hair was a heart doctor with a phobia going into the operating room. What he couldn't forget was the several times he kissed her in the dream and how much he adored her.
Shaking the thoughts from their minds it was finally time to say goodbye.
"You take care noona and please keep in touch. I couldn't wait to see you win an Olympic gold!"
"You to Chan ah take care and I couldn't wait to see you taking on the next chapter of you journey."
They hugged each other tight while the dream they didn't know they both shared kept flashing in their minds.
Maybe in another universe, in a different lifetime,
in different personas, they were meant to be together. They were meant to love each other.
