He splashed me directly in the face, the cold water nipping at my skin. I shivered before returning the action. He laughed at my failed attempt to soak him.

"Ready to walk out with me?"

My eyes followed the lengths of the water. It went out very far. Too far. What lurked below the surface of the blue waves was beyond me.

"I don't know."

"Here, grab my hand and we'll walk until the water stops at our stomach. That sound good?"

I couldn't let my nerves ruin this.

"Yeah."

He took my hand in his and walked me out, stopping where the water barely covered my belly button. My breath hitched. I squeezed his hand, fearing going any further.

"How do you feel?"

My legs began to tingle, my paranoia getting the best of what was creeping below the deepest point I could see in the water.

"I'm fine."

Biggest lie I've ever told. If I went any further, God knows I'd be sucked under, left for dead. There was no way he believed me.

"You want to turn around."

"No, I'm okay."

I screeched as I felt something brush against my leg. I jumped into his arms, and he wrapped them around my waist.

"That was my foot."

My body released it's tense muscles and I stepped back onto the sand, the water still tickling my stomach.

"I'm sorry. I don't think I want to go any farther out there."

"It's okay. Look how far out you got anyways."

I glanced at the shore. It was small from where I stood. He sloshed closer to me and pulled me into a side hug.

"Can I at least dunk you once?"

"Fine."

He grabbed my waist and fell over me, pushing me under the water. I opened my eyes, struggling to see past the bubbles. His face was close to mine, and his hair was swaying in the water. After a few seconds, he pulled me back up and I took a deep breath.

"We can head back now, I'm satisfied."

"I'm not!"

"Wh-"

I cut him off, diving towards him and bringing him back under the water with me. I heard him shout before his head plunged below the wet surface. His hand caressed the small of my back, but my back was soon covered by nothing but the fabric of my bathing suit. When we stood back up, he seemed nervous.

"Sorry about that."

"It's fine."

We sloshed back to the shore and my eyes scanned my path, avoiding any contact with seaweed or rocks. My body glistened as the sun reflected on the drops of water soaking into my skin. The first touch of my feet to the sand attracted clumps to stick to my toes.

------------

I woke up with a jolt. Damn. My body was heated by the grey comforter I nestled underneath. The sun was shining through my sheer curtains, marking a line on my carpet. Another shitty day I had to get through.
