"Some mistakes...just have greater consequences than others." - Jojo Meyes
He waltzed off the court as he let his multiple gold medals dangle from his neck. People from the audience began to throw a wide array of roses and toys as he and his team exited the court, and a sea of young girls crowded the boy as he met up with his coach.
"Good Work Oikawa! We love you!" the girls squealed.
"Haha, thank you, thank you, ladies! Couldn't have done it with you guys and my team." Oikawa was then bombarded with thousands of gifts and papers from the wooing crowd, begging for his autographs. Even more fans crowded him after he exited the arena.
"Wow, Oikawa, you're quite the popular one aren't ya?" Kunimi scoffed.
"I mean, I'm not surprised." Oikawa laughed.
He was kidding, of course, only just a facade to hide his true insecurities. He felt a slight tug at his shirt - it was a little boy. He held a blue and yellow volleyball in his hands and frantically gave it to Oikawa.
The boy's lips quivered with nervousness, "Um...hello Mr. Oikawa...would you please sign my volleyball? You've been my idol ever since I picked up a volleyball and I really wanna be like you someday!"
"Of course! Why wouldn't I give a signature to my number one fan?" Oikawa bit off the cap and signed the volleyball with gold Sharpie, and handed the ball back to the little boy. The child then pulled out his cellphone and asked for a picture, but between juggling the volleyball in his hands and the phone, he lost grip of the ball and it rolled into the street and chased after it.
Once the ball finally halted in the middle of the street, the boy was able to pick it up. Oikawa saw in his peripheral car speeding across the street.
Shit. That car is gonna hit that boy! He thought.
The boy froze in shock as the piercing headlights and jarring sounds of the car horn grew closer and closer. There was not enough time for the boy to move out of the car's path. Oikawa couldn't stand watching, doing anything.
And suddenly, his body moved all on its own.
The boy rolled onto the concrete as the ball flew into the air and bounced across the parking lot. His mother, screaming in agony, ran to the child asking if he was alright.
"I'm fine but..." the child pointed to what appeared to be Oikawa below the car. Blood dripped from Oikawa's head as he laid helplessly on the concrete. Oikawa glanced up at the sight of his teammates talking to him, but he could hear nothing besides a deafening ringing sound in his head. Everyone else was silent, fearfully watching as he struggled to stay alive.
With the last of his fading strength, Oikawa faced the crowd with a grimaced expression and quickly put on his confident smile to reassure everyone around him.
But then, everything turned black.
