chapter four : forests and oceans

AS IT TURNED OUT, THE FORD WAS NOT THE BEST PATH to take to the Shuddering Wood. Hundreds of Telmarine soldiers had set up camp there, building dangerous looking catapults and weapons to use against the Narnians. It would be impossible for them to cross; especially with Raena and the dwarf in their company. The group of six watched from behind a stack of logs as the Telmarines chopped down tree after tree for their defenses.

A horse neighing from nearby made Raena slide down immediately, instinctively pulling Edmund down with her. He gave her a smug grin, but she only rolled her eyes, shoving his arm away harshly.

"This is not good at all," Raena said, risking another short glance over the log.

"Perhaps this wasn't the best way to come after all," Susan whispered.

"Well what are we meant to do now?" Raena hissed back.

"I thought you were so well at navigation?" Edmund mocked.

"I am. But there's only so many ways to get to your destination," Raena snapped. "Unless you'd like to continue walking for another week, after which the Telmarines will have hunted down the rest of your friends and the Prince and killed them all."

Peter took one last look at the Telmarines before sneaking back off to the woods they had just come from. They ended up back at the cliff side, as it really was their only option left.

"So where exactly do you think you saw Aslan?" Peter asked Lucy.

"Oh, this is ridiculous," Raena muttered under her breath.

"I wish you'd all stop trying to sound like grown-ups," Lucy said. "I don't think I saw him, I did see him."

"I am a grown-up," Trumpkin muttered.

"It was right over..." Lucy said, looking around the forest carefully.

Suddenly, she screamed as the ground beneath her feet gave way and she fell, disappearing under the rock.

"Lucy!" Susan cried.

They rushed over to the side of the cliff, praying that the worst hadn't happened, but luckily Lucy was just fine. She'd only fallen a short way, down to a rocky path along the gorge that seemed to lead safely down to the bottom. Perhaps it was possible that Aslan had appeared in the woods.

"...Here," Lucy grinned widely.

Trumpkin came down first after Lucy, followed by Peter, Susan and Edmund. Edmund held out a hand for Raena to help her down, but she ignored it, jumping down the hole by herself. Edmund sighed, trailing behind as Lucy led the way down the cliffside to the river at the bottom, where they would be able to get across to the woods.
