Trying to Escape

I promised, I swore to myself that I would never come see him again. But, heh, here I am. Surprise.

I gently knock on the door of my childhood friends house, whom I haven't spoken to in almost 4 years.
"Don't answer, don't answer." I thought to myself after knocking for a second time.
The adrenaline coursing through my veins forced me to knock for a third, and final time. Before the standing hairs on my hand reached the soft wood, the door opened.

(4 years prior, at Nekoma high school)

"Kenma, wait up!"
I heard a faint voice behind me and looked to see who it was. It was Kuroo, our volleyball club's team captain.
"Hey Kuroo.." I say, as I make a sorry attempt to hide the pain in my voice.
Ever since Kuroo started dating that girl from class 2-C, I haven't been the same since.
I've had strong feelings for Kuroo since he moved into the house next door. Our families loved each other as soon as they met. Then me and Kuroo became almost inseparable. That's about it.
"I was wondering if you wanted to stay after practice today to set me some extra balls? I need more practice." He said, looking directly into my eyes.
I hate it when he does that. I mean, not that I don't like it, it just makes me feel that he likes me back. I don't know anymore.
"Hey, is something wrong?" He asks in a concerned tone.
"No, I'm fine," I reply, " and yeah, I'll help."
"Awesome!" He said, " see you later then?"
"Yep. See ya." I reply, choking back tears.
I turn and run to the nearest restroom, checking to see if anyone else in there. Once its clear, I go inside an empty stall and cry until its difficult to breathe. This has been my after school, before volleyball routine for the past 2 weeks. I glance at the time on my phone. It reads 2:30. Practice starts at 2:35. Shoot.
When I reach the gym, hands on my knees an struggling to breathe, I look at my phone again. "3 minutes late" I say to myself.  As I'm trying to catch my breath, I sense a large figure hovering over me. I slowly look up, almost relieved to realize its Kuroo.
"Kenma, where have you been? I know you didn't leave the school... please don't tell me you were playing your game and lost track of time AGAIN."
"No... I-I was.."
I struggle to find an excuse. I look him in the eyes, hoping he'll forgive me for running late.
"It's ok," He says. " just hurry up and get ready."
I nod as I jog over to the locker room. About 4 minutes later I'm out on the court, setting volleyballs to my teammates, for what feels like eternity.
After practice, I meet up with Kuroo at the net.
"You ready?" He asks, wiping sweat from his forehead.
"Yep." I reply in between chugs of water.
That's when everything changed.
