Light footsteps could be heard running down the hill into the dark forest followed by heavy footsteps. The light footstep was owned by a small figure which could be seen under the full moon in the village of ohria. Normally, she would think the full moon looked pretty in the dark night but at that point, she thought it looked eerie with no star in sight. The small figure was followed by a crowd with farming equipment at hand.
Inside the forest, she stopped running and tried to control her heavy breathing at the same time looking for a place to hide. She had to be wary of wild animals mainly snakes and wild dogs. As she started running again, she questioned herself on why she decided to follow her "boyfriend" to meet his parents in the village. Had she known it was going to turn out this way, she wouldn't have dated him.
Under the moonlight, she saw a hole which she would fit into thanks to her small frame. She immediately slithered into the hole as she waited for the villagers to pass by. Her eyes widened at she saw each of them with weapons and lamps. She broke out in cold sweat as she saw they were all on red clothing. She felt relieved and lucky that they didn't come with hunting dogs. As soon as their voices faded, she regulated her breath and let her mind wander.
She remembered how she fell in love with Nweke Uwaturu an Igbo boy. Looking back, she should have known that his name meant something more. She recalled how he made her feel loved in a way she had never felt before. How they planned how their family would be like. How magnificent his proposal was. Her nervousness when she they planned to meet his parents in the village. Her excitement on the thought that she would bring his kids into this world. And finally, their journey to the village. How would she have known that in this 21st century, people still practiced the act of sacrificing people to deities?
She was supposed to be asleep after eating. No one knew that she hated bitterleaf soup, not even Nweke. She normally cooks her bitterleaf soup to be not so bitter. That night, she pretended to eat the food as she threw it to the dog beside her. As she went to bed and was drifting, she heard voices saying "she is asleep now, let's prepare her for the sacrifice". She woke up fully after hearing that and decided to escape through the window. Hence, being chased.
She jolted from her thoughts when she heard footsteps approaching her hiding place. She shivered knowing that she had been discovered. Contrary to her expectations, the figure didn't drag her out. Instead, he crouched and stared into her eyes, while giving an eerie smile he said " you are right where we want you to be". She already felt something slithering and wrapping itself round her legs. She felt really cold as she stared into the eyes of her lover of two years. She tried looking for a bit of warmth in his eyes and saw none. She came to a sudden realization that she wasn't the first, neither would she be the last.
Her last thoughts were "somebody, help me!!!" Which was never to be heard.
