Part Twelve | In Each of our Hearts

Start from the beginning

"That's right. Midoriya broke some bones but Recovery Girl patched him up in no time. Aizawa and Thirteen are recovering well too." she replies, taking another slice of the barbeque chicken pizza with a grin. "Oh, I'll have to work this off but it's too good to stay away from." she snickers, pulling a light smile out of me as I continue nibbling on my slice.

"So..." Midnight starts up, although her tone had changed a bit and I looked at her in concern.

"Aunt Nem?" I set my half eaten slice on my plate. "Something wrong?"

"Well...I guess I'll just say it..." she sighs, wiping her hands with her napkin and my shoulders grow tense in preparation for whatever she was about to say.

'She's probably so mad with me...I really overdid things...' I ducked my head and stared silently at my hands. 'I almost died...'

"Your parents called me..."

2nd Person POV

"...What...?" you mumble, raising your head in surprise although your expression grew muted at the grim look on Nemuri's face.

"They weren't...exactly happy..." she frowned. "Reporters flocked to the USJ attack in no time and I knew they'd learn about what happened eventually...Especially since the school had to contact all the student's parents or guardians but...Well, I figured they'd prefer to hear about this from me..."

You couldn't help but scoff, your surprise quickly melting to indifference at the thought of your parents. "So they remembered that I exist?"

"Y/n, that isn't..." Nemuri sighed. "It isn't like that..."

"Oh, it isn't?" you scowl. "They left me here, aunt Nem. They barely even told me goodbye! They're heroes, that's fine! They're needed elsewhere but they hardly even contact me! They just left for the States and have haven't said a word to me for eight years!" you snap and Kayama's expression quickly shifted to irritation.

"Damn it, Y/n, they didn't just up and leave or abandon you! They left for you! They didn't have a choice!"

"Left for me? Are you kidding?" you scoff. You'd never seen your aunt actually visibly upset, much less at you but the notion didn't last long in your mind. "Why would they leave 'for' me, huh? What could possibly be so important to leave your only daughter for years?" the faint memory of you, at the age of seven, tearfully begging your parents to stay unwillingly came to mind and you furiously shoved it down.

"Y/n, I..." Midnight withered. Her expression grew tired. Weary and you were silent as she let out a soft sigh. "I can't say..."

At those words, you felt as if your breath was knocked out of your chest.

"You...you know why they left..?" judging from the guilty wince Nemuri gave, she definitely knew. "Wait..." you hiss, bitterness seeping into your tone as you slowly get to your feet. "You knew all this time...You knew why my parents left and you just kept it from me?"

Midnight jumped to her feet and quickly rushed around the dinner table to stand before you.

"Y/n, wait, I didn't...I couldn't just..."

"Couldn't just what?" you sneer, glaring up at your aunt as you ball your hands into trembling fists. "Couldn't just tell the crying seven year old that her parents didn't abandon her? Couldn't just say why they left her with an aunt she barely knew? Huh?!"

"Y/n, please! You have to understand, I wanted to tell you but-"

"I understand completely!" you yell, feeling hot tears spill down your cheeks as anger and betrayal curled in your chest. "They didn't leave for me or whatever bull they told you to feed to me! They left cause they didn't want a failure of a daughter that can't even control her quirk!" the resounding slap that followed had your head snapping to the left from the force and a quick burst of energy filled you as nothing but silence echoed in the room.

"Y/n, don't you ever say that!" Nemuri yelled, sporting an impressive glower as you faintly touched your stinging cheek. As you did, her expression fell and a shaky breath left her lips.

"You...slapped me..." you murmured. Any fight you had in you drained away at the realization as Kayama hesitantly reached out.

"Y/n, I'm sorry...I didn't mean to...I..."

You served her a humorless laugh as your expressionless stare met hers.

"Glad to know where you stand in all this..." you brush past her and head upstairs to your room. You slam the door shut and lock it behind you, feeling another pained pang in your chest when realizing that Midnight hadn't even called after you or followed you upstairs. Your cheek stung, almost as much as her silence did, and you slowly sank to the floor.

Your head thunks softly against the wood as you stared at the ceiling and tightly dug your nails into your palms. Your composed expression melted and a snarl curled your lips as a slew of emotions twisted in your gut. Slamming your fist against the door, you forced the energy you'd absorbed out of you in your rage, filling the room with a red glow from your quirk.

"All this time...she knew..." you hiss through your clenched teeth, feeling your palms sting as your nails bite into them. When you glare back up at the ceiling, however, everything stilled.

Bearing down on you were not your usual spears but instead, multiple different bladed weapons ranging from swords to axes and even flails. You blinked, staring mutely up at the angry red creations of your quirk as they lingered for a moment longer before shattering.

The borrowed energy seeped away and you stared blankly at the ceiling before turning your gaze to your balled fists. Gingerly unfurling your fingers, you grimaced at the sting and the sight of the crescent shaped cuts in your palms.

"What...was that...?"
