Kate stood in the distance, watching as Jason talked to Macie. His tall figure staggering over her. Macie's blonde hair blew wildly in the wind and Jason took his hand and ran it down her arm. What does she have and I don't? Thought Kate, as the bell for first period rang.

Cautiously, Kate sauntered into first block which was none other than Home Economics. She had just lost Jason to Macie, and now she had to hear all about it. As she turned the corner, Kate instantly regretted coming to class. Macie sat on her desk, the blue in her eyes dancing with excitement.

"KATE!" Macie's sing song voice echoed in the classroom. "Guess what, guess what, guess what!" She yelled, running across the crowded room to greet Kate.

Playing along, Kate feigned interest although she already knew what was going to come out of Macie's perky little mouth. "What?" For added effect, Kate raised her eyebrows and grabbed Macie's lean shoulders, just wanting her to stop bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet.

"J. . . . J. . .  JASON ASKED ME TO THE DANCE!" The excitement was evident in her voice as it rose nearly 6 octaves. "You know how I have been sitting back and admiring him . . . trying to flirt with him? Well, it finally payed off. He.Asked.Me.To.The.DANCE!" Kate smiled instinctively, although she could feel the tears beginning to work their way up to her eyes.

"Don't you go out with Jason though, Kate?" Brian's voice came from the desk behind Kate's. Stifling a cry, Kate attempted a fake laugh.

"Oh, HECK no!" She replied, attempting to sound appalled at the very thought of her and Jason going out. "He and I are just friends. And Macie," Kate turned around, a smile plastered on her face, "I am so happy for you! I know how much you like him! You guys will have the greatest time!" Woodenly, Kate began to take her seat as she felt the tears in her eyes spill over. Instantly, Kate silently thanked Macie for being way too self absorbed to realize that she was upset.

"Hey, Kate?" Wiping her eyes, she turned around and met Kyler's eyes. "Since, you, uh, don't go out with uh. . . Jason?" His question hit Kate's chest like a 1000 pound weight and she struggled to keep herself together, "I was uh. . .  wondering if um. . . you would uh. . . like to go to the fall formal with me?"

Kate smiled, but she knew it didn't reach her eyes. "Sure," She said, her voice cracking at the false happiness, "I would love to."

"Great! Awesome. . . I'll uh. . . call you with the details?" Kyler smiled at her, his brown eyes full of excitement.

"Of course." Kate whispered, "But shh! Class is starting!" Turning around Kate smiled to herself, if anyone would make Jason jealous it would be the school's quarterback. . .  Kyler.
