ok so i'm taking the philosophy class and--jumping right into the deep stuff wow. he was like "let's think of philosophy like trying to decide whether or not to go to the cinema. pros: i like the hot dogs they have there. cons: i'm poor" and then immediately after he was like "let's jump to something a bit more complex: what does it mean to have free will?"
Just a sort of mental image: the belief of human souls lasting an eternity while everything else is doomed to fade. While the world is crumbling around us, we carry on, we keep walking despite the path dissolving beneath our feet, and though our mortal bodies may crumble, the souls inside last an eternity- we have little, inconsequential choices but in the end we have no choice but to carry on: it's the nature if the human soul
ok a direct quote from the vid: "So perhaps, the way things are in the universe at one time doesn't really determine how everything has to be at all future times."
*drapes self across sofa dramatically* the way the past has been and the choices previous humans have had have drastically changed throughout the course of human history, and there is no way to predict the future or the dissimilar choices that will be faced by future generations
wait also this direct quote that i'm gonna spiral about later: "So, for example, we might think that some of the findings from quantum mechanics that I alluded to in the first video might show us that there might be fundamental indeterminacy and uncertainty in the universe."
the fundamental certainty of uncertainty in our universe
like yes, there are connections to the past, but they're always changing?
the only consistency is inconsistency itself
the way, for example, Back to The Future thought the year 2015 was going to look, is vastly differently from how it actually was,,
there are no proper predictions for the future??? tiny things continue to change and in a few years our world may look vastly different from how it does today. in the same way we look back on the victorian era, the renaissance, medieval times- eventually people will look back on us that way
(if you recognize any of this Yes, I did draw directly from this to write the conversation in my Christmas chapter of The Graveyard Boy)
