the birthday cake was small, vanilla with strawberry buttercream, scattered with rainbow sprinkles. rosalita davis held it like it was a treasure. seven candles flickered, making her daughter's face glow. "make a wish, mi amor." she whispered.

matilda-joane davis smiled, flashing her multiple missing teeth with excitement, and took a deep breath. her stepfather, deputy daniel davis, wrapped an arm around rosalita's waist as they sang happy birthday. while her mother's voice was nothing but angelic, daniel's voice was... something.

the clock had only just struck midnight. that was their tradition, to celebrate the very second the birthday began. "happy birthday to matilda—" they continued to sing.

the sound of shattering glass cut through their singing. a brick flew through the window, landing beside the table with a dull thud. then came the slam of the front door. daniel's arm moved from rosalita's waist to his holster. "stay behind me." he demanded.

rosalita, ever so brave, shook her head and stepped in front of him. "no, it's okay, honey. i know what's going on. just-just keep tilly behind," she insisted, her voice trembling. she knew this day would come eventually, she just wished it hadn't been on her daughter's birthday.
