     In a time without technology, with widespread poverty, and cars being rare, life was going well for a 12 year old girl. Mary Ann loved her situation at the moment. She and her older sister help their mama take care of their two younger brothers, do chores, and be kids. One morning, as her sister goes to wake her up to start breakfast, she finds a shocking surprise.
